Description

R. MILLS BAG April 23, 1935.
Filed 00:. 3, 1984 Patented Apr. 23, 1935 `UNITED sTATEs BAG Raymond Mills, Gloversville, N. Y., assignor to The Locktite Co., Inc., Gloversville, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application October 3,
3 Claims.
My invention relates to bags and particularly that type carried by women for holding small articles, commonly known as `l'costurne bags.
Bags of this type which are constructed with- 5 out handles are usually carried in the hand or under the arm. When conditions arise necessitating the free use of both hands and arms it is necessary to lay the bag down with possible loss, due to forgetfulness or premeditated theft, par- 10 ticularly where such necessity arises in a public place. It is therefore the purpose of my present invention to provide a bag of this type having a ring handle element which can be concealed When it is desired to carry the bag in the hand or under the arm as a "tailored bag and engaged over the wrist when it is desired to carry the bag as a sportsn bag or to secure free use of the hands and arms for a desired purpose without laying the bagdown upon some supporting member such as a table. o
In the drawing chosen to illustratemy invention, the scope whereof is set forth in the appended claims:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a bag conshowing the ring handle exposed and ready to be engaged over the wrist;
Figure 2, a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3, a side edge view with the ring handle O concealed; v
Figure 4, a top view showing the zipper closure of the bag, and
Figure 5, a fragmental perspective view showing the concealing pocket for the ring handle.
Referring tov the drawing my improved bag is shown as comprising a flexible outer body portion ii) and an inner lining ll, said body portion may be fabric or leather or any other suitable desired fiexible material. The open and closed status of the mouth of the bag is Controlled by Operating a "zipper fastening structure l2. In the body portion li) at one side edge of the bag I provide a slit 13 of desired length and along each edge of the slit a fiap |4 is located. These the body portion so as to modify the presence of the slit by screening the lining from observation through the slit and may be made integral with or attached to the body portion by stitohing as desired. The fiaps M are stitched together along their free edges to form a pocket structure lying between the body portion Ill and inner lining VI l. The ring handle of the bag is indicated at 15 and is retained to the bag by a fiexible strap E6 which passes through the ring and bridges the mouth of the pocket formed by the fiaps I4,
structed in accordance with my invention and iiaps M are preferably of the same material as 1934,) sefiai No. 746,715
said strap being suitably secured at its ends to the bodyportion IO on opposite sides of the slit respectively. It will be obvious that such construction provides for retaining the ring to the bagV at all times and permits said ring to' be moved to positions outside the bag and within the pocket. In addition to the utility of my invention previously referred to it may be noted that When the ringv handle element is Within the pocket it is protected against breakage and prevented from marring furniture in the event the bag is thrown carelessly upon a table or the like.
While I have shown the use of two fiaps and the formation of a pocket by stitohing the fiaps together I desire to point out that such stitohing could be omitted and the flaps left free. Furthermc-re, the slit in the body portion may be located at other points than the side edge With only one fiap employed and directed across the slit so as to screen the lining of the bag from view through the slit.
I claim:
1. A bag comprising a flexible outer body portion, inner lining and means for opening and closing the mouth of the bag, saidbody portion having a slit therein, a flap along each edge of the slit extending inwardly between the body portion and lining and stitched together along their edges to provide a pocket, a ring, and flexible means retaining the ring to the bag and permitting movement of Vthe ring to 'and from positions outside the bag and in said pocket.
2. A bag comprising a fleXible body portion, inner lining and means for opening and closing the mouth of the bag, said body portion having.
a slit in one side edge, a fiap along each edge of the Vslit extending inwardly between the body portion and lining and stitched together along their edges to provide a pocket, a ring, and fieX- ible means retaining the ring to the bag and permitting movement of the ring to and from positions outside the bagV and in said pocket.
3. A bag comprising a flexible body portion, inner lining and means for opening and closing the mouthof the bag, said body portion having a slit in one side edge, afiap along each edge of the slit extending inwardly between the body portion and lining and stitched together along their edges to provide a pocket, a ring, and means bridging the mouth of the pocket and extending through the ring to retain the latter to the bag and permitting movement of the ring to and from positions outside the bag and in said pocket.
RAYMOND MILLS.
