Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
R. M. COSBY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
CROSSCUTLSAWING- MACHINE.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 19,983, dated April 20, 1858.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD M. OosBY, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new Improvement in Machinery for Sawing Vood; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a perspective view in which A is a saw, B a guide frame, O a spring D a stick of wood, E a frame or buck, F a bar, G a lever pawl designated to catch in the ratchet I-I and hold the bar F down upon the wood. I is a weight, and J a rule or measure upon the buck or frame E.
The following is the operation of the Inachine: The wood being placed upon the frame E, the saw A is held in Contact with the wood by the spring O which is attached to the upright lever K and weight I. The
saw A is made to operate truly by the guideframe B thus causing the saw to run much easier than when held only by the hand.
The force with which the saw is held to the wood is regulated by varying the weight or force at I.
' Scantling for balloon frames and other lumber designed to be sawed square, may be gaged, and so sawed square and perfectly without the use of any other instrument.
I claim no gain of power by leverage, nor any of the parts described, when taken separately, as new.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isn The combination of t-he rocking lever (K,) spring (0,) and weight (1,) with the saw frame as described and shown.
RICHARD M. OOSBY.
-In presence of- H. W. ELLswoRTH, EDWIN W. BROWNELL.
