This invention appertains to presses and more particularly to a novel ram head for baling presses.
In presses of the high compression type, considerable difiiculty is often encountered in returning the ram head to its normal position after the completion of its working stroke, in that the material being compressed works in between the 'under certain conditions, but where the finis formed with this construction, the cutting off of the fin is rendered more difiicult by the ribs and grooves.
It is therefore one of the primary objects of this invention to provide novel means for constructing the ram head itself, whereby the head is permitted to give or collapse on its return stroke and to ride over or past the fin.
Another salient object of my invention is the provision of a self-releasing ram head having its Working face provided with wear plates which normally project beyond the sides of the ram head proper and which form a solid abutment against the head upon the forward working stroke of the head, but which are permitted to give inwardly upon the return of the head.
A further important object of my invention is to provide a ram head having sectional wearing plates on its Working face, the meeting edges of the sections of the wear plates being bevelled in opposite directions, whereby the plates are permitted to give inwardly and forwardly upon the return movement of the ram head, the sections of the wear plates normally resting firmly against the head upon the forward movement of the ram.
A further object or" my invention is the provision of novel means for connecting the wear plates with the ram head, whereby said plates will be normally held in proper position on the head, said means including bolts carried by the plates and loosely extending through the ram head with resilient means on the bolts normally urging the plates-into contact with the head.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved ram head for baling presses of the above character, which will be durable and eificient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in I which drawing- Figure l is a front elevation of aram head constructed in accordance with my invention.

Referring to the drawing, in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate the corresponding parts throughout the severalviews, the letterA generally indicates my improved ram, which comprises the head 5 connected in any preferred manner to the ram plunger 6. The ram head 5 can be of any preferred construction and reinforced in any desired manner and the same embodies a solid front body 1.
The forward working face of the solid body 1 is provided with my novel wearplates 8, 9 and Ill. The wear plate 9 is disposed at the longitudinal center of the body 1 and extends entirely across the-same and is rigidly secured to the ram head by the use of fastening elements H. The longitudinal edges of the central wear plate .9 is bevelled in opposite directions as at l2 for a purpose, which will be later set forth. The side .wear plates 8 and I0 likewise extend across the face of the ram head and the same have their inher longitudinal edges bevelled inwardly as at 13, and these bevelled edges 13 rest upon bevelled faces i2 of the central wear plate 9.
As clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, the outer edges of all of the wear plates 8, 9 and i0 extend beyond the perimeter of the body and thus, these projecting edges of the wear plates engage the inner faces of the press, box (not shown). v
Rigidly secured to the wear plates 8 and ID are rearwardly extending bolts i4 and these bolts extend loosely through enlarged openings i5 formed in the ram'head. Surrounding the bolts (4 are relatively heavy expansion springs 16 which bear against the rear face of the body I of the ram head and against adjusting nuts I! on said bolts.
The ram head illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 is' adapted for use in certain types of presses wherein two of the walls of the press box are immov- 7 ably disposed and thus, the ram head is adapted to give only in two directions. In use, upon forward movement of the ram all of the wear plates rest solidly against the body I of the ram head I andthus, the formation of the wearplates does notdetract from the operation of the ram head upon its forward movement. movement of the ram head, should an obstruction be met, such as the fins heretofore referred to, the plates 8 and ID will be permitted to slide inwardly toward one another. against the tension of the coil springs 16. As lateral pressure takes place on the outer longitudinal edges of the wear plates 8 and I0, these plates will be forced inwardly and outwardly and the bevelled faces I2 and 13 act as a guide means for said wear plates. As soon as the obstruction is passed, the plates will be re turned to their normal position by the springs l6 and the arrangement of said bevelled faces I2 and I3.
In Figure 3 I have illustrated a ram head wherein the wear plates can give in all four directions and this head is particularly adapted for use in baling presses, wherein all of the walls of the press box are of animmovable nature.
in this form of my invention, I utilize four wear plates 28, 2|, 22, and 23, and these plates each occupy substantially a o ne-fourth part of the, front of, the ram. Each plate is provided with a single rearwardly extending bolt 24 which extends through the ram head in the same manner asthat shownin Figure 2 of the drawing and these bolts arefalso spring pressed.
The section orwear plate has its two inner edges inwardly bevelled, as shown in Figure 3. The section 2! has one edge bevelled outwardly as at 25 and this edge engages the inwardly bevelled'facing edge ofthe section or wear plate 20. The other edgecf the wear plate 2| is in- The wear plate 22 has one inner edge bevelled as at 26 and this edge engages the otheriinwardly bevelled edge of the wear platen, The other inner edge of the wear plate 22 isinwardly bevelled as shown. The wear plate 23 hasboth ofits inner edges outwardly bevelled for engaging the inwardly bevelled edges of. the sections or wear plates 2| and 22.
In operation of this type of ram head, it can be seen'thatthewear plates act torelease or collapse in all four directions and'upon the return stroke of the rain, the plates are enabled to give inwardly owing to the formation of their meeting edges andthe means of mounting the same on the ram head. Allof the plates tend to resume their normal position as soon as the fin passed due to the thrust of the expansion springs, and the bevelled faces slide one on the other to guide said plates back to'their original places,

In this view I provide two wear plates indi- I cated by the reference characters 21 and 28.
These wear plates extend entirely across the face of the ram head and each occupies substantially one-half of the area of the forward face of said head. The meeting edges of the wear plates 21 and 28 are bevell d in'opposite directions as indicated by the reference characters 29 and 30 and these bevelled faces engage one another as clearly shown in Figure 4. The plates carry the bolts "3| on which are' mounted the expansion springs' 32. The opposite ends of the springs bear respectively against the ram head and adjusting "that I have provided an exceptionally simple and durable form of ram head'whichwill permit the ram head to return to its normal position irrespective of the formation of fins or the like on the material being compressed.
Changes in details maybe made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but what I claim as new is:
, 1. A self-releasing ram head for baling presses comprising a rigid body, sectional wear plates arranged at the front end of the body, guide posts carried by the wear plates loosely extending through the body, whereby the sections of the wear plate are free to swing on the body upon movement of the body in one direction, and spring meansnormally urging the sections into intimate contact with the inner face of the body.
A self -rele'asing-rain head for baling presses comprising a rigid body, sectional wear "plates at the front end of the body, bolts carried by the sections of the wear plates extending loosely through the body, spring means on said bolts normally urging the sections into intimate con tact with the forward face of the body, the meeting edges of the sections being provided with companion mating bevelled faces.
3. A self-releasing rar'n head'for baling presses comprising 'a rigid body, a centrally disposed wear plate extending across the front face of the'body and rigidlysecured thereto, the longitudinal edges of the wear plate being bevelled in opposite direction, and side wear plates extending across the front face of the body having their inner longitudinal edges bevelled'for sliding engagement with the bevelled edges of the first wear plate, rigid bolts carried by the side wear plates extending loosely through the body, and expansion springs normally holding the side wear plates fiat against the'f'ront face of the body.
4. A self-releasing ram head for baling presses comprising a rigid body, wear 'plates arranged at the front of the body, each of said plates 00- copying substantially acne-fourth of the area of the front of the body, means loosely mounting each plate on the body, spring meansn'ormally urging each of the plates into intimate contact with the front of the body, one of said plates having its inner edges bevelled inwardlyjanother of said plates having its inner'edges be'vell-ed'outwardly, and disposed diagonally opposite the first theother of their inner edges bevelled inwardly, said bevelled edges of the wear plates being disposed in overlapping relation, as for the purpose specified.
