Description

'April 16, 1935. J. MQGOWAN 1,997,771 I TEXTILE YARN v Fil ed Jan. 16, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Irma/7507' Patented Apr. 16, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 15 (Balms.
My present invention relates to the textile art, and has particular reference to an ornamental and novelty yarn suitable for the manufactur of textile cloth and fabrics.
The novelty yarns heretofore used have included threads of different colors and diiierent thicknesses, or both. In order to provide a textile yam of distinctive appearance, I have devised .a series oi novelty yarns which utilize enlarged portions, such as splashes, slubs, or flakes, and raised portions such as nubs, together with novelty twists such as ratine'.
My improved novelty yarns consist of diflerent arrangements of a base yarn having spaced sections of diiferent thicknesses which may be combined with threads of different colors which are preferably twisted to form spaced nubs, the yarn if desired also having a selective ratine twist.
With the above and other advantageous leatures in view, my invention consists of new forms of yams more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 represents a yarn contei spaced splashes;

eFig. 3 discloses a twisted yarn ha spaced flakes;
Fig. i is similar to Fig. 3, but discloses a type designated as French liaise; I

Fig. 13 represents a long spaced flake yarn, with two hubs of different color on each liaise;
Fig. 14 is similar to Fig. 13 with three noes on each flake, a preferred arrangement including two cotton hubs of difierent color and one tinsel nub;
Fig. 15 is similar to Fig. 12,-three nuhs being provided between flakes, the hubs being oi difierent colors;
colors (Cl. in -52') Fig. 16 is a novelty yarn with flakes, miles on the flakes, and a ratine twist between flakes; and
Fig. 17. is a section of novelty cloth woven with one form oi the improved novelty yarn.
My improved yarn arrangement is formed by utilizing fiakeaor the equivalent splashes and clubs, with hubs positioned selectively on or between the fiakes, together with a ratine twist wherever desired. To this end, I have positioned a desired number of nuts, either one, two, or three, on a lease yarn which'has spaced thiclc. nesses, hereinaiter termed flakes, and have further utilized a ratine efiect wherever desired to incrase the ornamental appearance of the yarn and of the textile fabric or cloth made therefrom. In making the novelty yams, colors may he used as desired tor the flakes, as welles ior the nabs, in order to give erent ornamental appearances to the yarn, and to the fabric woven therefrom.
Referring to the drawings, the yarn 26 shown in Fig. 1 includes a core 26 twisted at intervals to provide a plurality of spaced'flalres 22. If desired, a binder see Fig. 2, may be used, to form a twist around the core, and may be additionally twisted to provide a ratine effect it between the flakes, see Fig. 3; ii the twist is amplined, as indicated in l ig. 4, a French iialre type is obtained having coerce ratine etiocts 25 between bunched flakes 226. Various ornamental yams may thus he provided by utilizing and binder threads.
Referring now to Fig. 5, a novel yarn ill cornprises a core about which a binder threed is twisted to provide spaced n'iilos 2d, the twist being arranged it preferred, see Fig. 6, to provide a ratine eilect between the nubs. Ur the yarn 3i, see Figs. 7 and 8, may comprise a core with a binder 323 which is twisted to obtain a line ratine efiect so, or a coarse ratine edect so. [in orne= mental yarn many time he obtained by using binder threads to provide spaced hubs, or to ohtain a ratine eiiect.
ese arrangements ere preferably utilized in selected combination; thus the yarn 36 iii-Fig. Q
spaced ill, and spaced notes oi ierent colors on the flakes, and'twist between the fielses; whereas the yarn lid in. Fig. has
donlole nuns it, and single nulls on the flakes with twist l i between the flakes, the iillbS of contrasting colors. The yarn G5 in ii double hubs and longer spacing between the flakes, whereas the yarn dd m Fig. 12 has douiiie nuts between the flakes instead of on the flakes. The combination of flakes and 51111388138 thus pro ductive of a series oi novelty yarns.
A yarn 41 is disclosed in Fig. 13, having a long spacing between the flakes; Fig. 14 shows a yarn 48 having three nubs 49, 50, on spaced flakes 52, the nubs 49, 5l being of binder thread of difierent colors and the nub 50 of tinsel thread, with twist 53 between the flakes. The yarn 54, see Fig. 15, is generally similar, but the nubs are positioned between the flakes, and the yarn 55,
see Fig. 16, has -very long spacing between the flakes 56 which have a single nub 51 mounted thereon, a ratine efiect 58 being provided between adjacent flakes. The combination of flakes, nubs, and ratine effects are thus productive of a different series of novelty yarns.
The cloth 5! woven from one form of novelty yarn described is depicted in Fig. 17, and includes an irregular arrangement of colored nubs 60 and flakes 6|.
The selective arrangements hereinbefore described thus permit obtaining a multiplicity of distinctive novelty yarns to suit requirements for any type of novelty fabric, as the materials forming the base thread and the nubs, the colors oi the materials, the spacing of the splashes and nubs, and the use of a ratine effect, may be varied as desired within the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A novelty yarn comprising a core having spaced flakes and a thread twisted therearound, the twisting being irregular and forming spaced nubs selectively positioned on said core.
2. A novelty yarn comprising a core having spaced flakes and a thread twisted therearound, the twisting being irregular and forming spaced nubs between the flakes.
3. A novelty yarn comprising a core having spaced flakes and a thread twisted therearound, the twisting being irregular and forming spaced nubs on the flakes.
4. A novelty yarn comprising a core having spaced flakes and a plurality of threads twisted therearound, the twisting of said threads being irregular and forming spaced nubs selectively positioned on said core.
5. A novelty yarn comprising a core having spaced flakes and a plurality of threads twisted therearound, the twisting of said threads. bei irregular and forming spaced nubs between the flakes.
6. A novelty yarn comprising a core having spaced flakes and a plurality of threads twisted therearound, the twisting of said threads being irregular and forming spaced nubs on the flakes.
7. A novelty yarn comprising a core having spaced flakes thereon and a plurality of threads twisted therearound and forming spaced nubs selectively positioned on said core, said yarn having a ratine twist between the flakes.
8. A novelty yarn comprising a core having spaced flakes and a plurality oi. threads twisted therearound, said threads forming spaced nubs between the flakes, said yarn having a ratin twist between the flakes.

11. A novelty yarn comprising a core with spaced flakes and a thread twisted about said core, the twisting being irregular to provide a nub on each flake, said yam having a ratine twist between said flakes.
12. A novelty yarn comprising a core with spaced flakes and a plurality 0! threads twisted 1 about said core, the twisting of each thread being irregular and forming a nub between adjacent flakes.
13. A novelty yarn comprising a core with spaced flakes and a plurality of threads twisted about said core, the twisting of said threads being irregular andv forming adjacent nubs on said flakes.
14. A textile cloth woven from novelty yarn having spaced flakes and spaced nubs.
