This invention relates to improvements in min--' ing, machines of the truck mountedtype capable of cutting a kerf adjacent the mine bottom in front of the track or. at various elevations and planes with respect thereto including shearing cuts at either side of the machine, and hasas its general objects to provide a new and improved machine of the class described constructed with a view towards ruggedness, compactness, adaptability and ease and simplicity of operation.
A prior application, Serial Number 157,005, filed December 15, 1926 by William :T. -McCullough and entitled Improvements in mining machines, which issued as Patent No. 1,891,917 on December 20, 1932, discloses a machine of the general type shown in my invention. My invention is, however, an improvement overthat shown in the McCullough patent in that a new and improved means is provided for supporting the cuttingelement for cutting in the various desired angles and planes with respect to the mine bottom and anew and improved means is provided for feeding and positioning the cutting mechanism together with a new and improved safety 25 feature to safeguard against breakage of the mining machine driving mechanism or actuating mechanism therefor. 7
Other more specific objects of my invention will appear from time to time as the following specification proceeds.
My invention may be more clearly understood with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Said motor is provided with a motorpinion 24 shaft 21 adjacent its opposite end andmeshes ,5;
with and drives a spur gear '29 on a shaft 30. The shaft is provided with a. sprocket 3|, which sprocket is connected with the rearward truck wheels! I for driving said truck wheels by means of a suitable chain and sprocket drive indicated at 32. The forward and rearward truck wheels and axles may be connected together in a suitable manner well. known to those familiar with the art; as,f.or instance, a chain andsproclret drive not herein shown since it is no part of my invention. p The pinion 28 is adaptedto be selectively connected with the transverse shaft 21 and said shaft is adapted to be drivenat. one speed by mounted on the transverse shaft 21".
collar 39- is feathered the-transverse shaft 21 "the sleeve26 and at another speed; through a.
suitable gear train connected with said sleeve in a manner which will hereinafter be more fully described sothe truck .Il] may bedrivenabout the mine by the motor 23 at either a low feed ing speed or high traveling speed. The method I between the inner end of the sleeve 23 and the gear-33. The clutchcollar 39 has clutch iews onopposite sides thereof adapted tomeshwith clutch jaws 4'2-"onthe inner end of thesl'eeve 26 or clutch jaws 43 on the face of the spur gear 38 so the transverse shaft 21 mayeither be driven directly through the sleeve 26 or may be driven at a reduced speedthrough the plhi'odflgspur gear-35, pinion 31 and spur gear.
The clutch collar 39 is shifted along the transverse shaft 21 to engage the clutch jaws 40 with eitherv the clutch jaws-42 or; 43 and cause the transverse shaft 21 to be driven at either a, highf or low" speed by means of a suitable system of levers which includes a clutchfork 44' operated.

; Hspur pinion 511s keyed to the vertical shaft 58 adjacent-its lower end and meshes with and drives-a spur gear 53 journaled on a vertically extending Stud 60 supported in the truck frame Ill. The spur gear 59 in turn meshes with teeth 6| cut on the outer periphery of the turntable l3 for driving said turntable. Thus'the turntable I3 may be turned at a highv speed equal to the speed of the sleeve 26 or at-a'lower'speed f at the speed of the spur gear 38. This'provides a high speed for positioning the cutter bar 20 and a lower speed for feeding said-cutter bar while cutting. "1
While the mining machine is ordinarily fed feeding means are provided for feeding said mining-=machine where the. cutting conditions are, exceptionally'bad which herein comprises av rope'drum 62 keyed on a sleeve63freely, mounted on the vertical shaft 56 and having'its lower end abutting the upper face of the spurpinion 51. Glutch jaws 54' extend upwardly from the 7 sleeve and are adapted to be engaged by suitable clutch jaws depending from the sleevelSl for driving the rope drum' 62' at either a'highor.

Thev central portionof' within this recessed portion adjacent therearward end thereof and' is adapted'to be meshed -into the coal on the track wheels ll, additional thereto.
with a spur pinion I5 freely mounted on a longitudinally extending shaft 'lfijournaled' within the cutting element I4 and adapted to be selectively connected. to said shaft by means of a clutch collar 'Iland clutch jaws .18 in; a'usual manner. Saidlongitudinally extending 'shaft'iis driven from them'otor I5 in a manner which will hereinafter be more fully described for turning the entire cutting element I4 about a longitudinal axis within the bearing member I! including the'motor I5, cutter frame I8, and cutter bar-20.
Suitable means. are provided for locking the cutting element M to the bearing member I'I during the cutting operation. Said means may be of any type well known to those familiar with the art but is herein preferably shown as being a pin :68 of enlarged diameter adapted to register with apertures 68? in the top half 'II of the bearing member I! and the central'portion I6 of the cutting element I4. The pin 68 is operated by a suitable hand lever 69 pivotally supported on the top half II of the bearing member I! and locked in its various operative or inoperative positions by means of suitable locking means in a usual manner. With such an arrangement the cutterbar may be held in a steady position for cutting in planes inclinedwith respect to the horizontal as readily as cutting in horizontal planes along the ground or at various elevations .with respect Referring now to the means for supporting the rearward end of the cutting element I I-and moving said cutting element about the axis of the trunnion shafts I2, a boss I9 extends rearwardly from the rearward cover for the motor I5 adjacent the longitudinal central portion thereof. Said boss isjournaled within a member 89 adapted to extendupwardly and rearwardly therefrom. The vertical portion of the member 89 is guided within a vertically extending guide formed within'a portion 8| of a support member 83 fixed to the turntable I3 and extending rearwardly therefrom. I a
The means for tilting the cutter bar and moving the cutting element about the axis ofthe trunnion shafts I2 is supported on stud shafts 84 extending outwardly from opposite sides of a casing 85 for a worm gear 86 andworm 81 and journaled in the support member 83. Said worm gear is journaled within the casing 85 and has a threaded bore adapted to receive a threaded shaft 88 having its upper end pivoted to the rearwardly extending portion of the member 89. Said worm is driven by a shaft 89 by means of hand wheels 99 on opposite sides thereof so that rotation of either hand wheel 99' will rotate the worm gear 86 which will translationally movejthe threaded shaft 88 therethrough and which willin turn pivot the entire cutting element about the axis of the trunnion shafts I2 for adjustingthe angle of the cutter bar 20 with respectto the mine bottom. 3
Referring now in particular to the cutter head I9 and cutter bar 20 andmeans for supporting said cutter head for movement towards and away from the cutter frame I8, a pair of parallel spaced guides 92 are provided on opposite sides of the cutter frame It adjacent'the rearward end thereof. Said parallel spaced guides depend downwardly from the cutter frameWIB when the cutter bar 28 is disposed so as to cut a horizontal kerf adjacent the mine bottom and are adapted to be engaged by parallel spaced'guides 93'extend ing upwardly from opposite sides of a support 'frame I8.
member "94 for thecutter head-"l9.'- Each guide 92 is provided with agib 95'extendingforwardly therefrom and integral therewith anda'dapted to engage a corresponding recess in each parallel spaced guide 93. A portion of each parallelspaced .7
guide'92 extends outwardly and around and abuts the side of each parallel spaced'guide 93-and a retaining member 96' is secured to the forward face of each parallel spaced guide 92. Each retaining member 96 abuts the forward face-offs. parallel spaced guide 93 for supporting 1 said guides for movement along the parallel spaced guides 92 towards and away from thecu'tter With reference to Figures 2, 6 and 7'; itrna'y be seen that the parallel spaced guides 92 and 93 are of a relatively heavy construction to adequately support the cutting element I4 and pre vent spreading of said guides.- Furthenthefgibs' 95, which engage corresponding recesses in the parallel spaced guides 93, areprovided to aidin guiding the parallel spacedguides 93 for movement along the parallel spaced guides92 and to the threaded shaft 99 extends through and below the memberSB and hasa spur'pinion' IEH keyed thereto. A nut I02 is threaded on the lower end of said shaft and abuts the lower face of the spur pinion IOI for holding said pinion onto said shaft. a A portion of the threaded shaft 99 adjacent the top side of the member98' is shouldered and abutsfthe top portion of the member 98 while the top face of the spur pinion IBI abuts the lower side of the member 98 so that rotation of the worm gear I99 will cause translational r'riov mentof the threaded shaft 99 withrespe'ct thereto which will move the support member94 there with'along the parallel spaced-guides 92-towards and away from the cutter frame 18.
The support member. 94'has" acutter bar supporting member I93 journaled therein and de= pending therefrom. An annular ring I64 is""se-' cured to the top portion of the cutter bars'u'pporting member I93 and abuts a shoulder I05 in the support member 94 for holding said cutter bar supporting member within the support mem-' ber 94 andpe'rmitting said-cutter bar" support: ing member to be turned within said support member. v
The cutter bar supporting member I 3 "sup? f ed shaft 99 will cause pivotal movement of the cutter bar supporting member I ca within the support member 94 for positioning or, arcuately feeding the cutter bar ZBalong the coal face.
It should be noted that the teeth of the pinion I9I and the rack I95 are curvedto permit move-l ment of'the rack IIJB'by the pinion ifli' during the cutting operation and to compensate for into the coal while positioned to one side of the track in a position substantially parallel to the track for permitting a kerf to be cut in the coal along the minebottom in front of the minetrack. Said -means may be of any type well known to those skilled in the art but herein comprises a pin I01 supported within the support member for vertical movement with respect thereto and adapted to engage any one of a number of apertures I08 adjacent the outer edge of the annular ring I04 and cutter bar supporting if member I03 which pin is operated by a suitable system of levers in an'obvious manner.
Referring now in particular to the means for rotating the threaded shaft 99 and arcuately feeding'or positioning the cutter bar 20, a clutch sleeve I09 is feathered to the threaded shaft 99 and has clutch jaws II depending therefrom and adapted to engage clutch jaws I I I extending upwardly-from the worm gear I00. The clutch sleeve I09 is supported within a cylindrical portion of the cutter frame I8 for vertical movement with respect thereto and is vertically moved to engagethe clutch jaws IIO with or disengage said clutch jaws from :theclutch jaws III and selectively drive the threaded shaft 99 from the worm gear I00 by means of a suitable system of levers well known to those familiar with the art ,(not' shown). Thus when the clutch jaws IIO engage the clutch jaws III and the worm gear I00 is being driven by the motor I5, rotation of the threaded shaft 99 is effected, and when the clutch jaws II-0 .are disengaged from the clutch jaws III, said threaded shaft is translationally moved through the worm gear I00 for adjusting the positionof the cutter bar 20 with respect to the mine-bottom. t M
The worm gear I00 is driven by a worm I-I2 freely mounted on the forward end of thelongitudinally extending shaft I6 and selectively connected to said shaft by means of a clutch collar I I3 providedwith clutch jaws ll dadapted tomesh with clutch-jaws II integral with the worm H2 in a usualmanner. Thus when .the cutter bar 'is positioned parallel with the mine bottom, said cutter bar maybe arcuately moved by 'means of the spur-pinion MI and rack I06 for feeding. said cutter bar across the face of the coal or positioning said cutter bar so it may be fed across'the' faceof the coal below the mine rails by means of the turntable I3. When the cutter bar 20 is in a perpendicular position with respect to the mine bottom on either side of the truck I0 as is shown by dotted lines in Figure 1 the spur pinion IOI may be used to arcuately move the cutter, bar 20 in a vertical plane for feeding said cutter bar vertically with respect to the face of the coal for making a shearing cut in the mine wall..
' Referring now in particular to the mechanism for driving the cutter chain 2| about the cutter bar 20 and actuating the feeding and positioning mechanism for the cutting element I4 and cutter bar 20, the motor I 5 is provided with an armature shaft] I6-having an armature pinion I I1 keyed to its forward end'.. Said armature pinion meshes with and drives a'spur gear I I 8 keyed to the rearward: end- 0f a longitudinally extending shaft I I 9 journaled, in suitable bearingsupports within 7 the central portion I6 of the cutting element I4. A bevel pinion I20 is keyed to the forward. end of the longitudinally extending'shaft H9 and meshes with and drives a. bevel gear I2;I}journaled at oppositeends of its hubwithinthe cutter frame I8.of the cutting element I4, The-lower portion of the hereof the hub of the bevel'gear I2 I' is splined and is adapted to been a ed by a splined shaft I23 slidably movable with respect thereto. Said splined shaft extends from the bevel gear I2I and is adapted to slidably engage'the' splined'bore of a sleeve I24 journaled within the cutter bar supporting. member I03 for driving said sleeve from the bevelgear I2 I The sleeve 1 20 is secured within the cutter bar supportingmember I03 ina usual manner and hasa cutter'chain sprocket I25 keyed thereto for driving the on chain 2'I about the cutter bar 20. a V V The longitudinally extending shaft I6 is adapts ed to'be driven from themotor I5 in reverse directions without reversal of the motor in the following manner: I I
A pair of bevel'gears I2Iisfreely mounted on the longitudinally extending shaft I:I-9.- 'Said bevel gears face .each otherandmesh. with a bevel gear I20 journaled on its hub within the central portion I6 of the'cutting element.
Suitable friction clutch mechanism is provided for driving either of said: bevel gears from the longitudinally extending shaft ll9iwhich maybe of any type well known to those familiar'with the art but which is herein shown as being friction clutches of the cone type. An internal cone I29 is integralwith each bevel gear -I2I. External cones I30 are integral with opposite ends of a clutch collar 'I3I feathered on ,the longitudinally extending shaft H9 and eachofthe'se cones is adaptedto engage an internal cone I29; The cones I30 are so arranged on the clutch collar I3 I that only onebevel gear I Z'I-may be driven at a time. It may thusbe seen thatwhen one cone I30 engages one internalcone I29 and one bevel gear I2'I is driven from the longitudinally ex--' tending shaft II'9 that the'bevel gear I20 is rotated in one direction and that when the other bevel gear I2I is driven by the longitudinally vex-f T tending shaft'I-I9,v the bevel gear I28 is rotated in an opposite direction.
A stub shaft I337is keyed to the bevel gear I28 and has a worm I34 keyed thereto. The worm I34 meshes with and drives a worm gear I35 keyed to a longitudinally extendingshaft I36. 7 The worm I34 and worm gear I35 are of the self-locking type so designed that the cutting element may be held in any desired position with respectto the turntable Iiiuntilv locked in a cutting position by external means which will hereinafter be morefully described. 'Aspur gear I3! is keyedto the shaft I36 and meshes with anddrives a-spur gear I38 keyed to thelongitudinally extending shaft I6 for driving said shaft;
It may now be seenthat the entire cutting element maybe reversely turned about a longitudinalaxis by'means of the motor I5 without reversal of said motor, for positioning the cutter Referring now in particular'to another of the novel features of my invention which includes a means-to prevent overload of the cutting or feeding mechanism during thecutting operation, the cutting motor I5 is connected 'to the feeding motor 23 in such a manner that an overload on said cutting motor will cause said feeding motor to be disconnected from the lineandthus prevent overload of the cutting mechanism and so that an overload on they feeding motor. 23 while driving the feeding or'traveling mechanism ateither a--high-or low speed will. cause said feeding motor to be disconnected from the line.
With reference to Figure 12, it may be seen that power is. transmitted to the cutting and feeding motors by means of suitable conductors and an electric cable reel I39 which may be selectivelydriven from the transverse shaft 21 in-ausual manner to wind an' electrical conduc tor onior unwind an electrical conductor from said reel asthe machine is traveling about the mine or being fed into thecoal. 'A positiveconductor I 46 leads from the cable reel I39 to the cutting motor I5 and the feeding motor 23. A controllerindicated at I43 is provided to start the-cutting motor I5 by cutting out a resistance indicated at I44 in a-usual manner. Another controller indicated at I45 is provided to cut out aresistance indicated at I46 in a usual manner to start the feeding motor 23. Thecontrollers I43 and I45 are provided with blow-out ci1s I4'I and I48, respectively, to prevent arcing between the controller contacts during the start ing operation. I
A conductor I49 leads from the negative side of the cutting motor I and controller I43. to the cable reel I39 and the negative side ofthe line. A conductor I53 leads from the controller I45 through a contactor I5I, overload relay I52and series. resistance I53 to the conductor I49and negative side of the line. g
An overload relay I 55 is provided'to cut off current from a coil I56 for operating the com tactor I 5I the coil for operating the overload relay I55 being connected in series with the'conductor I49 so that anoverload on the cuttin motor circuit will operate said relay.
A coil I51 is provided to open the overload relay I52 upon overload of the feeding motor 23. The overload relays I 52 and I55 are normally closed and are only open upon overload of either'the cutting or feeding motor circuits. When either of the relays I 52 or I55 are open the circuit to the coil I56 for, the contactor ,I5I is openedwhich opens said contactor and thus o'pensthe circuit for the feeding motor 23 to stop said motor upon overload in either the cutting or feeding motor circuits.
Current is transmitted to the coil I51 for opening the overload relay I52 through the conductor I56 and contactor I5I. The series resistance I53 is provided to effect opening of the overload relay I52 upon a certain predetermined overload of the feeding motor circuit. Another resistance I58 is shunted across the coil I56 and is adapted to be connected with said coil through a switch indicated'at I59 to effect opening of the overload relay I 52 at a 'differentpredetermined overload than when directly connected throughthe series resistance I 53.
Thesswitch I59 has an operating handle I60 connected thereto, which handle is connected to' the hand lever 45 for changing the feeding or traveling speeds from a high to a low speed by means of a crank lever I 6I and a link I62. The crank le'verIBI and link I62 are so arrangedwith respect to the operating handle I60 and-hand lever '45 that when the clutch jaws II]v engage the clutch jaws 42 for operating the feeding or traveling mechanism'at a high speed, the switch I59 is closed and the resistance I58 is shunted across the overload relay operating coil I56, and
range said coil that the overoad relay I52 will drop out at substantially the same load on the gear train when operating at a low rate of speed asat a high rate of speed. It may be seen that such anarrangementis very desirable and is an added safeguard to the feed gearing in that the reduction gears in the feeding ortraveling gear train are under a greaterload at a given load on the motor 23 when effecting feeding or traveling at a low speed than when effecting feeding or traveling at a high speed. Thus it is necessary that the overload relay I52 dropout at a lesser load-on the motor 23 whenthe machine is being fed or is traveling at a low speed than at a higher speed. 7
It may thus be seen that-during the traveling or cutting operation and upon overload of the feeding and traveling gearing that the overload relay I52 will open at the same load on said gearing'while operating at eithera'high or low speed which will open the circuit to the coil I5'I for the contactor I5I and open said contactor It may also be seen that during the cutting "operation when the cutter bar 20 is being fed into the coal or across the face offthe coal'and said cutter bar hits an obstruction in the coal measure whichcause's an undue load on the cutting mechanism, that this load will be transmitted to the cutting motor I5 which willcause the overload relay I55 to open and whichwill cut out the feeding motor 23 from the circuit.v This'will stop feeding of the machine and allow the cutte bar 23 to'freeitself, T 'It may now be seen'that newand improved means has been provided tostop feeding. of the machine during overload of the cutting or travel ing or feeding mechanism, and that this means is so arranged as to operate. at. substantially the'same load on the feeding or traveling gear train while the machine is, traveling or feeding at either a high orllow rate of speed.
