The bearing sleeve 34 is fixed by a set screw 31 both against rotative and longitudinal movement in the housing 22. The combination stuffing gland and bearing 33 is capable of longitudinal movement in the housing 22, with the re- 36 holds it against the packing 35. The opposed ends of the combination stufilng gland and bearing 33 and of the bearing sleeve 34 are notched to provide radial 34a, respectively, as shown in Figure 6. Said shoulders are opposed circumferentially and are engaged by the ends of the coiled spring 36. The spring 36 is coiled in a direction opposite to that in which the shaft is designed to be driven. a
Any rotation of'the combination stufiing gland and bearing sleeve 33 with the shaft is resisted by the coiled spring, which is locked against rotation as a whole by the engagement of its righthand end against the shoulder 34a of the fixed bearing sleeve 34. In addition, such rotation would tend to uncoil the spring and thusexpand it radially so as to lock the spring in the housing. Thus the strain on the fixed bearing sleeve 34 due rotation of the combination stuffing gland and bearing 33 is reduced to a minimum.
In the bottom of the housing is set a pressure grease or oil cup 38 by means of which lubricant may be forced into the housing to continuously renew the supply therein. By the-1ocation of the grease or oil cup 33 intermediate the gland 33 and sleeve 34, the bearing is lubricated from the inside, and water from the pump is thus prevented from entering ing housing.
The pump casing is provided with laterally spaced, upwardly projecting apertured ears 39 by which the pump as a whole is hinged to lugs 39a depending from the bottom of the gear casing section pump is so located that the pulley 32 is in the plane of the belt I 3a of the motor. In Figures 1 and 2 the pulley 32 is shown engaged with said belt by means of which it is driven so as to rotate the shaft 29 and operate the rotor 25 of the pump. In Figure I 3 the pump is in the idle position.
.The shaft housing 22 has an upwardly projectinto the packing and into the bearing apertured lug 40 to which are pivotally connected plates 4| engaged by a crank arm 42 on a horizontal rock shaft 43. Said rock shaft extends horizontally below the gear casing section Ila, which has depending lugs 43a, 43a, in which said rock shaft is rotatively mounted. Said rock shaft extends through and beyond the usual apronsurrounding the gearing below the washing machine. There it is provided with a handle 44 for rotating the crank arm 42 to raise or lower the housing by swinging the pump as a whole on the pivotal connection of the ears 39 with the lugs Ila, as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 5. The

By this means the pulley may be brought to engagement with the belt I 3d when it'is desired to operate the pump or may be moved from such engagement, as shown in Figure 3, where it is not engaged by said belt, and the pump will be idle. The bottom ends of the plates 4|, in either position of the pump, engage a shoulder 40a on the pump casing at one side of their pivotal connection with the lug 40 and a coiled spring 44a connecting the crank arm 42 to the casing Ila, causes said arm .to snap to either position in a familiar manner.
A short flexible hose 45, connects the inlet 23 of the pump to a drain in the bottom of the tub in the usual manner. The stuiling box being placed immediately adjacent to the rotor casing, the entrance of water into the shaft housing is absolutely prevented. In addition, any wear of the parts and adjustment required therefor is automatically taken up by the pressure of the spring 36 which yieldingly forces the end of the combination stufling gland and bearing 33 against the packing 35. No locking of the pump shaft may occur, since any tendency to bind the shaft for any'reason whatever would be-prevented by the yielding of the spring.
We claim as our invention:
1. In combination with a rotary shaft and a housing therefor, means providing a stufling box in said housing, including a packing, a combination stufling gland and bearing for said shaft longitudinally movable in said housing, a bearing sleeve in'said housing spaced fromsaid gland, the opposed ends of said gland and sleeve being constructed to present shoulders facing in opposite directions, and a coiled spring on said shaft interposed between said gland and sleeve and having ends engaged with said shoulders, said spring being 'coiled in a direction opposite to that in which said shaft is designed to rotate and its di-' ameter approaching the inner diameter of said housing.- I
