IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-CAPPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,581, dated January 22, 1878; application filed October 19, 1877. V 4 a To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN SAOKSTEDER, of Louisville, J efierson county, in the State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Oappers, of which the following is a specification:

The invention relates to the attaching of metallic caps to wine, liquor, or other bottles used as packages for liquids, &c.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of said bottle-capping machine. Fig. 2 is a front view of same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a leather band constituting part of said machine.

The object of my invention is to furnish a device by which to attach metal caps to wine, liquor, or medicine bottles, &c., and in an expeditious manner, without fracture of or injury to the metallic caps or bottles.

In the drawing, A in Fig. 1 is a bench with the invention attached in working order. L is a lever, by which the invention is operated by the foot, while the bottle to be capped is placed in the collar or interlaced circular band,

hereinafter more fully described, by the left hand of the person operating the capper, the caphaving first been loosely placed over the neck of the bottle by the right hand of the operator.

X in Fig. 2 is an upright block of hard wood attached to the bench, and it is concave on upper side, so as to fit the neck of a bottle to be capped. B is a leather band, with alternate strips cut out on either end, as shown in Fig. 3 at a a b b,- and at C the band is cut through to the end, so as to permit the band to be interlaced in the form of a collar or loop,

formed, attached to the block X, and the ends of same passed through openings in the bench at the opposite side of the block X, and sewed together at .the bottom under the bench, as shown in Fig. 2, and then, by a continuation of the band, it is attached to the levermarked L, as shown in Fig. 1. S is a spring to hold the leather collar in its open position, so as to receive the neck of the bottles, and is strong enough to carry the weight of the lever:

It will be seen from the foregoing that when the lever and circular leather collar and band are in position at rest, the neck of the bottle, with the metallic cap placed loosely over it, is inserted in the collar, and the operator, with two or three motions downward Withhis right foot (he sitting astride of the left-hand end of the bench) on the lever, compresses the metal cap on the neck of the bottle, and thereby fastens it compactly to the same, and the spring, on removal of the operators foot or the pressure of same, causes the leather collar to open for the purpose of removing the bottle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
