1,994,652 SHEET MAGAZINE For. rarN'rING raEssEs Application March 27 1933, Serial No. 662,892
'14 Claims. ((31. 271-61) Our invention relates to sheet magazines for printing presses of the same general character as the stock magazine disclosed in Patent No. 1,694,015 of December 4, 1928 which eventuated In our previously patenteddevice, as in the present case, the magazineis'pivotally mounted atone end thereof at one side of a printing press and is swingable horizontally from closed, operative position transversely of the press at the front thereof to an open, inoperative position along the side of the press where it is out of the way of the-pressman' during make ready.
' Our present invention has for an object thereof to provide-{improved means for supporting the free end of the swingable magazine in its closed, operative position and for releasably securing the magazine in such position. n 7
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for transmitting motion to the sheet advancing mechanism of the magazine.
More specifically it is an object of our invention to supply for the free end of the swingable magazine a self-latching support having latching means for accurately disposing the magazine in its closed, operative position and which supplies a medium providing for the continued support for the free end of the magazine when it is swung open from its said operative position.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the free end of a swingable magazine selflatching supporting means capable of adjustment to accommodate the magazine in different operative positions thereof and having cooperating latching elements which remain'relatively undisturbed in various adjustments of said supporting means. n n
A further object of the invention is to provide a magazine latching device of the present character including a spring which operatesto hold the magazine relative to the supporting press frame and with such firmness as to prevent vibration and the rattling of parts.
An additional object of theinvention is to provide in the driving train for operating the sheet advancing mechanism of the magazine a swiveling connection wherein the post, on which the magazine swings, is embodied as an element.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a sW-ingable sheet magazine embodying our in-' vention, the same being shown in connection with a platen press of the familiar Gordon type-Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 are vertical sectional views showing in detail the construction of the support at'the free end of the magazine and illustrating par- 5 ticularly the latching mechanism for said support, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view in detail illustrating the swiveling connection in the driving train which operates'the sheet advancing mechanism of the magazine.
Referring to the drawing, the illustrated press parts, which will be recognized at once include the usual side frame brackets 10 and gear guard 11. The platen, designated by the numeral 12, is shown in its open position. The crank disk 13 and the front shaft 14 on which said disk is mounted are shown together with a portion of the side arm 15 and a portion of the rollerframe link 16 at one side of the press.
The sheet magazine portrayed includes an inclined bed plate 17 for supporting a pack of sheets on edge, said'plate having end frames 18 thereon in which is slidably guidedan inclined back rest 19 for such sheets. i r
A supporting post 20 for the magazine is swivelingly socketed in a bore 21 in a boss 22 on the gear guard 11 and is held at different elevations by means of a rest in the form of a collar 23 which bears on said boss, said collar being adjusts ably secured to said post by means of a set screw 24 threaded in the collar. A horizontal supporting arm 25 carried'by the post 20 is horizontally andangularly adjustable thereon, a reduced end 25 -of said arm, circular in cross section, being inserted ina transversebore 26 in said post 20, the adjustment of the arm .25 with respect'to the post 20 being maintained by means of a set screw 27 threaded in the post and adapted to be turned against said reduced end 25 of said arm. The
bed platel'l of the magazine proper is trunnioned 40 on the supporting arm 25, a boss 28 being formed at one end of said bed plate and inserted in a transverse bore 29 in said arm, the boss 28 normally being held against turning in said arm by means of a set screw (not shown) threaded in the arm and turned against said boss. Swingably mounted, as above indicated, on the swiveling post 20, the magazine proper may be swung forth and back into and out of operative relation across the front of the press (Fig. 1) and may be adjusted to'secure the desired accurate disposition thereof, in its operative relation, through an adjustment of the post 20 in the gear guard 22 foot 31 having a toe 32 and heel 33. Inserted through vertical slots 34 cut in opposite walls of the hollow foot 31 is a latch lever 35, said lever being pivoted to said foot by means of a horizontally disposed pintle 36. A socket 3'? consisting of an axial bore in the lower portion of the leg receives and holds an expansion spring 38 which bears at its lower end against the upper edge of the latch lever at the rear of the pintle 36. Said lever 35, unless otherwise positioned against the action of said spring 38, is caused by said spring tobear against the limit stopv 39 (Fig. 2),
at the bottom of the rear slot 34 in the shoe 31. The forward end of the latch lever 35 projects through the front slot 34 in the shoe and at its tip has a beveled cam surface 40 extending rearwardly from the lower edge of the leverto the upper edge thereof. Cut in the latch lever 35 immediately at the rear of the cam surface 40 is a V-shaped notch 41 which cooperates with a latch pin 42. This pin 42, occupying a horizontal position, is mounted at one end thereof in an upright car 43 formed integrally with an elongated latch block a, said block being a hollow structure consisting of a side wall 44 having an integral top flange 45, bottom flange 46 and end flanges 47. Slots 48 (Fig. 3), formed in the bottom flange 46 of the block a and extending lengthwise of said block, receive threaded anchoring studs 49 which are threaded in the frame bracket 10 at the side of thepress'opposite the gear guard 11. Bearing nuts 50 on said studs 49 engage the underside of the lower flange 46 and lock nuts 51 on said studs engage the upper side of said lower flange.
When the magazine is latched closed in its operative position (Fig. l), the latch lever 35 is disposed as shown in Fig. 3 with the tapered sides of the notch 41 in said lever engaging the latch pin 42. To swing the magazine away from its operative position, the pressman" grasps the angularly disposed handle 52 at the rear end of the lever 35 and lifts upwardly thereon swinging I said lever out of engagement with the latch pin 42 and into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, wherein the lower edge of the forward end of said lever bears against the limit stop 53 at the bottom of the front slot 34 in the shoe 31. In thus disengaging the latch lever 35 from the pin-42 an appreciable lifting force is transmitted through the spring 38 to the magazine proper, such force to a considerable extent counterbalancing the weight of the magazine and its contents. Having a convenient grip upon the lever. 52, the pressman swings themagazine open and at the same time readily continues to exert a lifting force on said lever with the result that the magazine and its swinging mounting are not subjected to undue strains. The magazine is closed in the same manner and with the same effect as in the opening thereof. After the shoe 31 has swung into place on the latch block a in final stage of the closing throw of the magazine, the'pressman releases latch lever 35 which is then acted upon by the spring 38, said lever thereupon re-engaging the pin 42, the tapered sides of the magazine with respect to the press in the latched position of the magazine. To accord with the vertical angularity of the magazine longitudinally thereof the latch block a is raised or-lowered on the anchoringstuds 49 and to accord with the angularity of said magazine laterally thereof, one end of the block' is set at a different elevation than the other. In any event the latch block a. is
stationed so that the bottom of the shoe 31 will skirt the upper surface of said block when the magazine is swung into its closed position. With this relation obtaining between the block a and shoe 31, any forward or backward adjustment of the block will leave. the latch lever 35 and. latch pin 42 in proper cooperative relation.
After the magazine is-fully closed and the latch lever 35 released, in latching position, the spring 38, acting through said lever 35 and the pin 42, firmly holds the shoe. 31 inplace upon the block a. If the pressman should close the magazine merely by pushing itand Without lending any' support to the magazine through the handle of,
latchlever 35, the cam surface,40 at the tip of said lever will engage beneath thexpin 42 and automatically tilt the lever 35 so that the notch 41 therein'will catch said pin.
Included in the magazine structure is awind:
Saidswiveling connection is constructed with the post 20 as an elementthereof, the details of said connection being best seen in Fig. 4. A
Upon swinging the magazine, the link 64 causes I the collar 61 to turn upon the collar 58, this be-' ing the only eifectof such movement of the mega:
rocker-disk 56.
thereof is concerned, remains unaifected in any position that may be occupied by the 'swingable magazine. 1 V
