(Granted under the provision of sec. 14, act of March 2, 1927; 357 0. G.
In my prior patent application No. 635,272 I have described a method and means for producing printed forms on the back of which at definite places carbon sheets are gummed for 5 the purpose of manifolding. The invention of the said prior patent application includes arrangements for automatically feeding the forms as also for printing and gumming the sheets with adhesive but only at the points where the carbon sheets are to be applied.
The present invention is an improvement in or modification of the invention of the said prior patent application as regards the supply of the carbon sheets and is distinguished principally by the provision of means for severing and applying the carbon sheets, a feeding device and a removing device, these devices being preferably provided on a single machine but being provided as independent machines if desired.
The improved means are illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically in side elevation the severing and applying apparatus. Fig. 2 shows the same arrangement in plan view. Fig. 3 shows the slots 25 in the lifting magazine and in the pressing apparatus.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the magazine is supplied in known manner from a spool of carbon paper which is unwound at intervals is also previously printed and provided with adhesive). The carbon paper is cut into small sheets corresponding to the points at which they are to be gummed to the form.
35 During the intervals of movement of the form blocks and 25a are secured is raised in the direction of the arrow 7 being guided by a fixed plate 23. The blocks 25, 25a are provided with one or more passages which lead to the collecting chambers 27, 27a. The latter are connected by a flexible hose or tube with an air pump of known kind which operates in such manner that suction action is exerted only on the upward movement according to Fig. 3 and the pressure action is exerted at the moment of pressing and of the downward movement indicated by the arrow i The waste portions of the carbon paper not utilized are removed at the outlet side of the machine by rollers.
Fig. 2 shows by way of example the direction of movement of the form 9 and beneath it and transversely thereof the direction of movement of the carbon paper 20.
apart and entrained (with the paper sheet which and of the carbon paper a plate 26 on which Naturally the path of the carbon paper might be disposed over the path of the form, the device being reversed. Also the carbon paper and forms might move parallel toone another in the same direction or in opposite directions.
The carbon paper may be replaced byone or more narrow sheets of carbon paper each with a variable feeding device. In the apparatus shown by way of example in Fig. 3 a slide' 28 slides in guides 31 which are provided with suction faces which are connected by flexible tubes to a reciprocating air pump. The slide 28 which is operated mechanically is moved over the magazines 12, 13 which are secured to the plate 10. The latter is raised in the direction of the arrow P so that the suction faces 30 slightly enter the magazines 12, 13. The pump operates in such manner that at a suitable point of time it exerts a suction action on the previously cut carbon sheets which then adhere to the suction faces. The plate 10 then moves down as shown by the arrow f The slide is displaced in the direction of the arrow 12 and remains above the printed form coated with gum. a
The plate 29 with the heads 8 rises in the di- 25 rection of the arrow 1 and presses against the paper 9 and against the suction faces 30, which hold the carbon sheets so that they may be gummed. The pump now exerts a pressure action. The slide 28 moves back in order to re- 30 ceive further carbon sheets while the form is again pressed, provided with adhesive and fed forward again.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In an apparatus for arfixing carbon paper sheets to selectively gummed forms and the like, means for severing and applying carbon sheets to the forms comprising an intermittently driven spool, a matrix, dies co-operating with said matrix to cut the carbon sheets of the desired shape during the intervals of the feeding ,movement, and suction means adapted to cause adherence of the carbon sheets to the dies, whereby said out sheets are pressed by the dies against the previously gummed forms to cause adherence thereto after the suction means have been rendered inactive.
2. In an apparatus as claimed in claim 1, a plurality of spools, and means to individually actuate these spools, the carbon paper being in the form of narrow strips wound over said spools.
PIERRE JAMES ETIENNE GLOGAUD.
