' a Claims. (01. 185-39)] This invention relates to games and more particularly to acalendar dial game which involves an element of skill and a degree of chance.
An object of this invention is to provide a game structurefwherein a spinning ,orrotating mem- A further objector this invention isto pit-r vide a device of this kind which is particularly.
designed for use by merchants in the sale of merchandise, the device being operated by a customer with the understanding that in the event the rotating or spinning member stop at a predetermined point, the customer will receive a prize or the like.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a detail front elevation of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary front elevation of the working parts of the device enclosed within the housing.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the ratchet holding member.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the pawl removed from the ratchet holding member and showing in dotted line the manner in which the plunger or operator engages the pawl for operaeral flange 13 which telescopes partly into the body 14 of the housing and is secured thereto b means of bolts, rivets, or the like.
Axially of the annular housing 14 is a fixed shaft or. post 15. which has secured thereto a pointeror arm 16 in the present instance mounted. in vertical position. A disk or plate 17 is se-l cured to the forwardend of aihub or bushing 18, rotatably mounted on the shaft or stud 15, and 5 a dial 19 is secured to the front face of this disk 17 and this dial carries'indicia 20 indicative of the days of the month. I V
These indicia are preferably formedof alter nate colors such as-red and black, and the num- 10 bers in the present instance run from 1 to 31 inclusive. A toothedwheel or ratchet 21 is secured to the hubor bushing l8at the rear end thereof, and this wheel rotates against a washer 22, which is fixedly secured to the shaft 15 at a point dis- 15 posed inwardly'from the rear end thereof.
1 A pivoted arm 23, which is mounted on a pivot 24, extends in thedirection of the post :15, and is provided with a reducedand upwardly offset armor pawl holding member. 25 at the inner 20 end thereof which terminates ina head or plate 26. A substantially U-shaped pawl 2'7 engages. about this armor extension 25, and is held .in engagement therewith bymeans of a relatively strong spring 28 which is secured at one end to one leg of the pawl member 27, and the other end of the spring 28 is secured to the back plate 12. s
The ratchet engaging portion of the pawl member 27 is so constructed that itwill be normally disposed out of engagement with the ratchet 21 so that this ratchet, together with the disk 17 and the dial 19, may rotate freely on the shaft 15. A stop member29 is carried by the back plate 12 for engagement with the inner end of the rock arm or lever 23.
An operating member or plunger, generally designated as 30, is mounted for sliding movement on the inner surface of the back plate 12, and this plunger has an extension 31 disposed outwardly of the housing 14 so that the plunger can be operated with the housing in sealed condition.
The inner end of the plunger 30is provided with a head or enlarged portion 32 having a slot 33 therein engaged about the post 15 and the upper end of this slot 33 terminates in an inclined portion 34,. the purpose for which will be hereinafter described. The side of the head portion 32 adjacent the rock arm 23 is provided with v an offset pawl engaging member 35 which engages a leg 36 carried by the pawl 27. A spring 3'7 has one end thereof secured to the plunger 30 and the other end secured to the back plate 12 so that the plunger will be automatically returned to inoperative position upon release of pressure from the extension 31. The head portion 32 is disposed between a pair of Washers 38 carried by the post or shaft 15 so that the plunger can readily slide downwardly and carry therewith the rock arm 23..
In the use'and operation of this device, the housing 11 will be normally sealed and the device may be mounted on a counter or the like with the plunger operating member 31 extending upwardly through the housing for operation. Upon depression of the plunger 30, the dog or ofiset portion 35 of the sliding head member 32 will contact with the lug 36 carried by the pawl 27 and will swing the arm 32 past the axis of the shaft 15. construction of the pawl member 27, asthis member is engaged by the plunger 30, it will be rocked slightly in a direction toward the toothed wheel 21 so that it will contact with the teeth of this wheel, and when the plunger 30 moves downwardly to a position where theinclined'portion 34 contacts with the post 15, the plunger 30 will be shifted in a relatively rapid. degree out ofthe patl of the arm 23. e
'Thespring 28 will then automatically return the arm to its uppermost position and upon return of this arm, the innermost end of the. pawl 27 will strike the teeth of the wheel 21 and cause this wheel to assume a relatively rapid spinning motion and carry therewith the disk 17 and the dial 19. In this manner, the plunger 30 cannot be stopped in its downward movement at any desired'point so as to effect a particular degree of tension ontthe spring 28 although, of course, it can be struck with a relatively strong force and forced downwardly rapidly so as to effect a'very rapid spinning of the dial 19.
The device herein disclosed is not designed for use in connection with any coin controlled mechanism although it may, of course, be operatively associated with such a mechanism, if desired.
In the present instance, the device is designed Due to the substantially V-shaped' for use by merchants in order to increase the interest of the trade by giving, as a prize, an additional article similar to the one already purchased if the customer turns the dial so that the dial will stop with the pointer over a number which is the same as the day of the month on which the article is purchased.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the'above' specificallydescribed embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
,1, A device as described, comprising a rotatable member, means for mounting said member for free rotation, a toothed wheel rotatable with said member, a swingable arm, a spring pressed pawl carried by said arm and adapted to engage said wheel for rotation thereof,.and operating means *foriswinging said pawl into operative position, said operating-means comprisingan elongated memberkhaving a slot therein with parallel sides and. terminating at one end in a cam portion to shift said elongated membertlaterally into released position. i l 1 2. A device as described,.comprisinga rotatable member, means for mounting said member for free rotation, a toothed wheelgrotatable with said member,-a movable arm, a pawl on the arm, a
spring for holding the arm and pawl in released position and operating means for moving the arm into wheel rotating position, said operating means including an elongated member having a slot thereinloosely receiving said mounting means for said rotatable member, a lug carried by said elongated member positioned in the path of said pawl, and a cam at one end of said slot for swinging said elongated member laterally into released position. .7
