This invention relates to locks and latches,
particularly yof the type in `which a key` mechanism, such as a pin cylinder lock, is used within one of the knobsv to turn a lock and/or latch operating spindle, which passes inwardly through the knob shank. It is of further importance in connection vwith such locks and latches as embody mechanism mounted on and cooperating with the knob shank. The invention primarily resides in a construction which permits they cylinder lock mechanism contained within the knob'to bequickly and easily removed by a` mechanic, not necessarily skilled inthe lock art, so that another cylinder, adapted to be operated by a different key, may besubStituted. In' most locks of the type referred to, to substitute one cylinder for another within the knob mechanisminvolves not 'only considerable labor, but also requires a skilled mechanic. My present invention is of importance in that it reduces substantially the time required to change the cylinder, and also obviates the necessity'fof employing a lock expert for that'purpose. The purpose of this invention may be better understood when it is appreciated that in largeapartment houses and oflice buildings, wherein a great number of such locks are employed, the occupants of the apartments and oliices are frequently changed, so that it becomes necessary to pro- '30 vide 'each new tenant with a different key.` The present vinvention permits thisto be easily and quickly "done without disturbing the main lock mechanism in the ,slightestV and without even opening the door on which the lock is mounted. In the present invention, the knob and knob shank construction are such that the knob,` or a portion thereof, maybe detached from the shank without disturbing the position of the latter, whereby, when this is done, an entirely new cylinder lock element may be quicklyl and easily substituted for the old one. Itpwill be observed that thekey 4, which I will term the pass key, operates'all of the pin tumblers excepting the innermost one 12, this latter being employed for a specialpurpose. Inasmuch as the' key-controlled defvice isy located within the hollow knob, it is, of course, importantthat the'two separable parts ,thereof must be locked together not only -so that the shank of the knob may beturnedA when the hand is 4applied to the outer knob` section 2, but' also' because the key-controlled device within the knob must be properly held and sup-` ported therein and retained against removal excepting by lone having the authority to re move it for repair or substitution. To thatvend I yprovide devices within the knob, which, when the separable sections thereof are connectedtogether, are moved so as'to lock saidsections so that they cannot be disconnected one from the other. `This knob locking mechanism I` Awill now describe. l
In the oppositeinner edges of the screw threaded portion of the part la, I provide two diametrically positioned recesses forming guide slots for receiving two sliding locking dogs '1 -7, which in Fig. 3 are shown as standing retracted in said slots. In the knob section 2, I provide two recesses 8-8, which, when the knob sections are assembled, face up with the dogs 7 7, so that when the latterare projected into said recesses 8-8, the two parts 1a and 2 ofthe knob cannot be unscrewed or otherwise disconnected. In order to move the dogs 7 7, I provide a controlling device 9 having a hub which is rotatably mounted on the inner end of the plug 5, said rotatable device having a. flanged portion in which are two angularl'y arranged cam' grooves Qe-Qe. On one side i'ace of each dog 7 is a pin or stud 10, which,l whenl the parts are assembled, stands in its respective cam groove 9a, as indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and 6.
Referring particularly to Fig. 3, it willv be seen that' it the? controller 9 is rotated counterclockwise from the position shown in Fig. 3,v it would tend to project the" dogs 7--7 into the recesses 8-8 of the part 2' thus locking the knob parts together.y Normally,` the controlling device 9 is locked by tumbler 12 to the cylinder 3, as shown ir-rliig'.` ll, and: isunlocked from'` the plug 5,l so-that when? a key ysuch as the key 4. is inserted said plug may be turned to rotate the spindle 6' without turning the controller 9. When, however, it is desiredy to operate said controller, a special master-key is used, this key being adapted to operate all of the pintumblers as shown in Figi. 5. When this key is used,y it
z moves tumbler 12 to a position where it locks the' controller 9 to the plug and releases it from the cylinder 3. Under this last condition, it is obvious that by turning the key 15 the controller 9 may be correspondingly turned, by which turning movement the dogs 7-7 vmay be proljected or retracted for the purpose previously described. In the particular form shown, it will be understoodv that the controller 9 is partly cut away on one side, as at 14, to afford clearance for the pin chamber 3a of the pin cyl'- inder lock. y
While I have shown and described herein a key-controlled device of the pin cylinder type in which aflat key is employed, my invention is notnecessarily limited tothat speciiic form of lock, as other types might'be employed, the main purpose being to provide in the construction of this lock a. key-controlled device within a. hollow knob, accessible thro-ugh the outer end of the knob, whereby, by the use of one key, 'the lock mechanism such as the spindle 6 may -be operated under normal conditions,` and whereby by the use of another key insertible into said device the knob locking mechanism may be actuated so thatuthe knob may be separated topermit the key-controlled device to-be changed or repaired as desired.

A hollow door knob including two separable parts, means for causing said parts to be engageable and disengageable by rotation of one relatively to the other, knob locking means within said knob to prevent relative rotation of said parts when assembled, door lock operating means also associated with said knob, and key controlled means also within said knob and Voperable by the rotation of one' key to operate; the; door lock operating means and by the rotation of another key. to operate the knob locking means, the outer section of said separable knob having a key passage in the outer end thereof.

A lock comprising a knob, a knob shank, a cylinder with a key plug contained within the knob, said knob and said shank being adapted to be fastened together by relative rotary movements, means for locking the shank and the knob against relative turning movements and means operative upon turning movements of the key plug relative to the knob for unlocking said locking means.
