Between the foot posts 13 adjacent the lower endsv thereof I have indicated at 36 a hinged top compartment (Fig. 3) which may be used for storage. Adjacent the upper ends of the bed posts 12 and 13 Iprovidek cross brace members 37, as shown in Fig. '7, and adjacent the under side of the bars 14 I provide similar cross brace members 38.

On each side of the bed I provide a rail 50. Each rail 50 includes an inwardly opening chan-f nelway 5l '(Fig. 2). One end of each of the rails 5.0 ispositioned in the recesses 18 of the head posts '12 while the opposite ends arepositioned in the corresponding recesses 18 of the footposts. The ends of the rails 50 are spaced from the bot'- Cil toms of the recesses 18 and pins 52 on the rails prevent longitudinal movement of the rails. To retain the rails 50 in various vertically adjusted positions, I provide pins 52 which are adjusted to be positioned in apertures 52 provided in the bed posts and which pass through apertures 52a in the rails 50 (see Figs. 1 and 4).
Above the rails 50 I provide a platform indicated generally at 53 which includes a deck 54 mounted on a plurality of beams 55 which extend crosswise of the bed andare supported on the rails 50. Adjacent each corner of the platform 53 I provide a horizontal arm 56 which is secured to the under side of a plurality of the beams 55 and extends beyond the end of the platform and is positioned in the adjacent channelway 20. Each of the arms 56 has one end of a cord 57 secured thereto as at 58 which extends upward and is rove through a pulley block 59 and then extends downward in the adjacent bed post recess 18 where it is secured to a counter balance member 60. The counter balance members 60 are adapted to move vertically in the recesses 18 between the ends of the arms 56 and the bottoms of the recesses. Intermediate the width of the platform 53 I provide a trough member 61 which opens through the deck 54 and has a plurality of electric light sockets and lights therein as indicated at 62. VA removable cover plate 63 is preferably provided to cover the trough opening.
When the platform 53 is vto be placed in an inoperative position it is raised as shown in Fig. 3 and to retain the' platform in this position I provide a plurality of latch members 63 on the under face of the deck 54. As shown, in Fig. 5, each of the latch members includes a spring pressed plunger 64 the outer end of which is adapted to be positioned in loop member 65 secured to the bar 39. The inner ends of the latch plungers 64" have cords 66 secured thereto which are in turn connected to a common cord 67 which extends towardsthe head of the bed and is rove through a plurality of pulley blocks 68. vAdjacent the head of the bed I provide a pulley block 69 through which the cord 67 is rove and then extends downward. Y
Adjacent the foot of the bed I provide a stretching device indicated generally at 70 and shown in detail in Figs. 9 and 10. As shown the device 70 includes a plate member 71 positi0ned on the deck 54 and.l has a hook member 72 thereon. Extending downwardly from the plate 71 through an aperture 73 in the deck I provide an arm 74 which has a threaded aperture 75 therein in which a similarly threaded bolt member 76 is positioned. The bolt 76 includes reduced end portions which are rotatably mounted ink bearing members 77 secured to the deck 53. At one end of the bolt 76 a bevel gear 78 is secured thereto which meshes withv a bevel gear 79 secured to a shaft 80. The shaft 80 is journaled in bearings 81 secured to the deck 54 and extends beyond one side of the deck where a hand wheel 82 is secured thereto.
Between the foot posts 13, I provide an exer-y cising ladder indicated generally at 83. As shown the ladder 83 includes spaced side rails 84 having a pluralityof rungs 85 extending therebetween. Adjacent the upper end of the ladder the side rails 84 thereof are pivotally mounted 0n a rod 86 which is supported by the members 19adjacent the foot posts. When the ladder 83 is in a vertical position it is adapted to be retained thereby by a plurality of pins 87 which are positioned in suitable apertures in the side rails adjacent its upper end. A plurality of removable weight members 91 which are slotted to flt around the rod 89 are adapted to be positioned on the member 88 and a nut 92 is provided on the rod 89 for retaining the members 91 in position. v
One end of a cord 93 is secured to the front member- 21 of the cabinet as at 94 from which the cord extends downwardly and is rove through the pulley and thence extends upwardly and passes over a pulley l95. From the pulley 95 the cord extends horizontally to the foot of the bed where it passes over a pulley 96 which is mounted on the foot member 19 and then passes downward and under a pulley 97 which is `also mountf ed on the foot member 19 and terminates in a hand grip member 98. Other hand grip members such'as indicated at 99 may be connected to the cord 93 intermediate the pulleys961and 97 by cords 100, if desired. v
In operation the platform 53 when not in use is raised as shown in Fig. 3 and retained in a raised position by the latches 63 and the rails 50 are also raised and retained in position by the pins 52. v
The ladder 83 may'at all times be left in a vertical position or it may be :swung upward against the bottom of the platform and retained in a raised position by hook members 101 mounted on the platform and which engage one of the laddervrungs 85. l .v v
Weight lifting exercises may be taken by an operator by means ofthe hand grip members 98 at any time whether the platform 53 is in a raised or lowered position. v v y' When it is desired to lower the platform 4the operator removesthe pins 52 which support the side rails 50 and lowers the side rails to a'position just above the mattress 17 and then the pins 52 are replaced. Then by pulling the cord 67 the latch bolts 64 move out of the members 65Vwhereupon the platform slowly lowers until the beams 55 thereof rest on the rails 50.
Thereafter the operator mounts the deck 54 upon which he may perform various exercises. If the operator wishes to treat various portions of his body by heat the trough cover 63A is removed and the electric bulbs 62 lighted afterwhich ,by lying on the platform 53 he may heat various portions of his body. If the-operator desires to stretch himself he secures his feet by means of a suitable harness to ring bolts 102 provided on the deck 54 and then connects one end of suitable harness to the hook 72 and fits'the opposite portion'of the harness to the portion of his bodyfor which it was designed tofit. 'Then by rotating the handwheel 82 in one direction he rotates the bolt member 76 which in turncauses the plate 71 .to move towards the foot of the bed thereby stretching the operator. By rotatingA the hand wheel 82 in the opposite direction the plate 71 moves towards the head ,of the bed thereby lessening the stretching tension on the operator. y v Positioned in the channelway42 of each. oi' the bars 39 I provide rods 103. Each of 103 is pivotallysecured to their associated bar by a removable pin 104 and in an inoperative the rods 103 are swung toa position within their respective channels 40, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To use the rods 103 they are swung out of their respective channels to a position transversely of the bed as shown in Fig. 7. In this position the free ends of the rods are positioned in the opposite channel 40 and retained therein by suitable pins 105. The pins 104 and 105 are adapted to be positioned in apertures 106 provided in the members 41 and the bottom portions of the bars 39 and are all removable so that the rods 103 may be moved to different positions.
The rods 103 may be used to support various exercising ydevices such as the punching bag assembly, as indicated at 107 in Fig. 6. Furthermore, the bars 103 may support a swing trapeze, a babys swing, etc. After exercising the operator may shower by placing a portable bath tub on the platform and spraying himself with water from the hose 29 and spray head 30. If a Warm spray is desired the water in the tank 24 may have been previously heated by the electric heating coil 25.
If the atmosphere is chilly the operator may draw the curtains 45 and 47 to enclose the bed and by turning on the electric heater 28 warm the atmosphere within the confines of the curtains.
Positioned in each of the channels 51 of the rails 50 I provide rods 107' which like the rods 103 are secured to their associated rails by removable pins 108 and in an inoperative position are swung to a position within their respective channels. To use the rods 107 they are swung out of their respective channels to a position transversely of the bed as shown in Fig. 3. In this position the free ends of the rods are positioned in the opposite channels 51 and are retained therein by suitable pins 109 similar to the pins 108. To use the rods for exercising thereon the platform 53 is moved to its raised position and the rails 50 also raised as shown in Fig. 3. The bars 107-may also be used to support various exercising devices such as the vaulting horse, indicated at 110 in Fig. 8.
As shown in Fig. 1, a sun lamp 112 mounted on an endless cable rove through pulleys 114 and 115 may be suspended over the mattress 17 or the platform 53 by suitable hook means associated with the pulley 114 which engages a ring 116 mounted on the cabinet 23 and b-y suitable hook means associated with the pulley 115 which engages the ladder 83.
It will be understood that various changes can be made in my construction without departing from the spirit of the appended claims, for instance, the bed may be made in the form of a davenport or other type, as desired.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided a novel gymnasium bed which besides forming a sleeping bed may be arranged to provide means for taking various kinds of exercises and therapeutic treatments.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In combination with a bed including corner posts and mattress supporting means, a vertical channelway in each of said posts, a rail member adjacent each side of said bed and positioned above said mattress supporting means, the ends of said rails being positioned in said channelways of adjacent posts, said rails being vertically movable in said channelways, means to support said rails in various adjusted positions, a platform positioned above vsaid rails, a second channelway adjacent the inner sides of said posts, a horizontal arm on said platform adjacent each corner thereof, each of said arms being positioned in one of said second channelways and vertically movable therein, a pulley block on each post, a cord connected to each of said arms, each of said cords extending upward and being rove through a pulley block and then extending downward in said first channelway, a weighted member vertically movable in said first channelway between the ends of said rails and the backs of said channelways, said cord being secured to said weighted member and releasable means to retain said platform in a raised position, said platform when in a lowered position being adapted to rest on said rails.

In combination with a bed including corner posts and mattress supporting means,'a vertical channelway in each of said posts, a rail member adjacent each side of said bed and positioned above said mattress supporting means, the ends of said rails being positioned in said channelways of adjacent posts, said rails being vertically movable in said channelways, a platform positioned above said rails, a second channelway adjacent the inner sides of said posts, an arm on said platform adjacent each corner thereof, each of said arms being positioned in one of said second channelways and vertically movable therein, apulley block on each post, a cord connected to each of said arms, each of said cords extending upward and being rove through a pulley block and then extending downward in said first channelway, a weighted member vertically movable in each post, said cord being secured to said weighted member and releasable means to retain said platform in a raised position, said platform when in a lowered positionv being adapted to rest on said rails.
3. In combination with a bed. including corner posts and mattress supporting means, a vertical channelway in each of said posts, a rail member adjacent each side of said bed and positioned above said mattress supporting means, the ends of said rails projecting to form guide portions to engage said corner posts, said rails being vertically adjustable, a platform positioned above said rails, said platform having guide arms at each corner and vertically movable along the posts, a pulley block on each post, a cord connected at one end to each of said arms, each of said cords extending upward and being rove through a pulley block and then extending downward in said channelway, a weighted member vertically movable in each post, said cords each being secured at one end to a weighted member and releasable means to retain said platform in araised position, said platform when in a lowered position being adapted to restupon the rails and adjacent to and above the mattress supporting means.
