Description
Feb. 19, 1935. R. s. TYLER PAPER CUTTING MACHINE Filed Jan. 15, 1932 INVENTOR. J ,7j/w" n s. Tyler, cleveland Heights, ohicjassignef k t Y to The Chandler and Price CompanygCleveland,
' n Ohio,` a corporation of Ohio Application January 15, 1932, serial No. 586,714 1 y3 claims. omai-se) This invention relatesto paper cutting machines, and particularly to an improvement in the back gauges of such machines. l
It is a primary object of the invention to provide a back gauge fora paper cutting machine which may be adjusted orswung in aV vertical planeto bring the face of the gauge into avplane parallel with the knife ofthe machine,`to provide means for eifecting such adjustment in an easy and expeditious manner, and to provide, in connection with such adjustment means, 'means `for facilitatingthe movement `of the ygauge in a direction longitudinally of the table of the machine.
To the accomplishment` of the foregoing and re-' lated ends, said invention,g` then, consistsof the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and thefollowingdescription setv forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, ,such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechans ical forms in which the principle of the invention Fig. 2 is a plan maybeused. n n t .n
In said annexed drawing: t ,t
Fig. 1 is a fragmentaryside elevation of a paper cutting machine; f l
view of the back gaugeof the machine; i n Fig. 3 is` a transverse cross-sectional View through the gauge, taken on a plane indicated by theline 3-3 of Fig.'2; i Y
Fig. Liis alongitudinal cross-sectional View through the gauge, taken on ya plane indicated n by the line 4--4 of Fig. 2.H t
A paper cutting machine of a type now com` monly used for cutting stacks `of paper, cards,
n etc., includes 'a table 1` having secured to the sides thereof uprights 2 whose front faces form` with the rear faces of guideway bars 3, slide--` waysfor the knifelbar 4, which carries the knife i 5. Side guides 5a may be secured to the table adjacent the front portionthereof.
The back gauge includes a central section 6 and the side sections '7` and 8. Bolts `.9 extend through apertures in the sides of the central section 6 and `through slots 10 in one side of the side sections 'l and 8.V Withthis arrangement,l la relative longitudinal movement of the ,side
The side sections may be secured in adjusted posi-` tion by means of nuts 11 secured to the ends of the bo1ts'9. The gauge sections are provided with forwardly extending gauge fingers 12, Whose front edges constitute the front faces of the gauge sections. 5 d Thercentral section 6 of the back gauge is secured, as by means of a bolt 13, to a bar 14 which is adapted to be advanced or `retracted along a slot 15 in theV table by means of a cable (not shown). n v
Disposed within a recess 16 near the rear end of the central section of the gauge is a carriage y17 having bifurcated ends which serve as bearvings for the support of freely rotatable ballbearing rollers 18, which rest on the table 1.
In order to adjust the front face of the gauge to bring it into a planeparallel with the knife,
the gauge may be tilted about the lower front edges of the vngers 12. For this purpose, I provide adjusting screws 19, lock nuts 20, and 20 retaining screws 21. The adjusting screws 19 are threadedly secured to the gauge and the lower ends of these screws rest on the carriage M17.
The retaining screws 21 extend through apertures in the gauge and are in threaded engage- 25 ment with the carriage 17. When it is desired fto tilt the gauge, it is only necessary to release the lock nuts 20 and turn the adjusting screws 19 in the `desired direction to raise ,or lower the gauge, whereupon the lock nuts 20,may be again tightened to preserve the adjustment. YIt will be understood that the retaining screws 21 are released during the adjustment and are tightened after the desired adjustment has been made.
The ball-bearing rollers 18 serve to carry the 35 load of the back gauge and facilitate longitudinal movement of the gauge along the table, when such movement is desired. s
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any ofthe following claims or the equivalent of'such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. Aback gauge' for paper cutting machines and the like, comprising a gauge section, a carriage for supporting the rear end of said gauge section tiltable about its front lower edge and providedwith rollers for facilitating sliding of said gauge section, transversely'spaced means for moving said gauge section wtih respect to Saidcarriage to thereby tilt the gauge and means N -1,9f9f1,4311- for locking said gauge section to said carriage after said tilting movement.
2. A back gauge for paper cutting machines and the like, comprising a gauge section, a carriage for supporting the rear end of said section tiltable about its front lower edge having bifurcated ends, rollers supported in the `bifurcated ends of said` carriage and rnevansj spaced;` transversely offthe:gaugeffor tilting .the #gauge section including screws extending through the gauge section and resting on said carriageiand auxiliary screws for locking saidpgaugehsection to said carriage after the gauge section has been tilted to adjustedpositiomoY .i o
3. A back gauge forpaper'tcuttingainachinesv and the like comprising a gauge section tiltable about its front lower edge, a housing adjacent the rear portion of said section, a carriage for supporting the rear end of said section, said carriage being disposed within said housing and comprising a bar having yat each end thereof a pair of spaced downwardly extending ears, a gshaftijournalledfin ea,clnpaafirmiears; and a roller mounted/on each.shafcnand= adapted-modest on a table or like support, andmeans for tilting the 'Tag'auge section including screws adjacent the ends o f ,and.ex`tending through the top wall of said housing vand bearing against said carriage.
