Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
PEREZ C. CLAPP, OF STOUGHTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR TURNING THE EDGES 0F CIRCULAR BOOT-TOPS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. .19,912, dated April 13, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEREZ C. CLAPP, of Stoughton, in the county of Norfolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Machine for Turning the Edges of Circular Boot-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and and method of using' the same, reference being had to the drawings hereto annexed, of which- Figure l, represents a perspective view of the machine and Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same, the same letters being used in each to denote the same parts of the machine.
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H is a frame of wood or iron, which may be attached to an ordinary work bench, or be constructed with legs sufficiently long to rest upon the floor of the work room. Upon the top of said frame, I place the board J, which I call the boot board the end whereof d, e, being convex, and of the desired form of the boot-top.
X, Y, is a movable frame, with a concave side to conform to the convex end of the boot-board J connecting by two rods 1^, r, which pass through holes on the top of the frame A, B, C, D, &c., with the cross bar T, beneath, upon which rests the lever L, which is attached at the end o, by a hinge to the frame A, B, C, D, &c.; aro-und the connecting rods r, r, are two spiral springs s, s, which rest upon the top of the frame A, B, C, D, &c., and pressing against the under parts of X, Y, will raise the same when there Vis no pressure upon the lever L; upon the to-p of X, Y, and moving in grooves, is a slide IV, having one side of the same concavity as y, furnished with a knob 7c to move it, Z is a narrow thin piece of metal, having one side of the same form as the end cl, e, of the boot board and the other side turnedl up, so that it may be lifted thereby.
upon the slide IV, which projecting part is 4 covered with a thin coat of ordinary paste; then the boot form Z, is laid upon the leather with its convex ledge even with the end (l, e, of the boot-board J, and firmly held down by the hand of the operator, while the pressure upon the lever L is removed, when the spring s s will raise the frame X, Y, turning up the projecting edge of the boo-ttop, when the slide IV is moved forward, by the knob 7c turning the projected edge of the leather over upon the boot from Z. Z is then withdrawn and suflicientpressure being applied to the lever L, X Y, descends and presses the turned edge upon the leather where it adheres, in the desired form when the pressure is removed from the lever L.
I propose not to confine myself to circular forms, but intend using the machine to turn boot tops with scallop and straight edges by varying the forms of the boot board J, and the matching sides of X, Y, and the boot form Z as also the slide W.
What I claim specifically as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the boot board J, the movable frame X Y, the slide W and the boot form Z for turning the edge of circular and other shaped boot tops, in the manner set forth herein.
