Application August 13,1934, Serial No. 739,683 r I claims. (01. 1.20--29) My invention relates to improvements in attachments for copy holders, and it consists of the combinations, constructions and arrange-- ments hereinafter described and claimed.
x and No. 1,950,706 issued March 13, 1934, and also is an improvement over the five pending applications, serial No. 676,381, filed June 17, 1933, allowed June 19, 1934, Serial No. 704,998, filed J anuary 2, 1934, Serial No. 717,245 filed March 24, 1934, Serial No. 733,636, filed June 3, 1934, and Serial No. 737,629 filed July 30, 1934. i
' I make use of a standard copy holder which is designed to be positioned in back of a typewriter, and which has a stationary part and a movable part. A lever lifts the movable part step by step as the lever is actuated, and this causes the copy to be raised with respect to a line indicator as the typist desires. After the movable part has lifted the pagebeing copied to a point where the line indicator is positioned at the lowermost lineon the page, then the movable part can be lowered and the page turned and the same operation can be repeated. The copy holder forms no part of my present invention except that'I make use of it with my attachment so that the copy holder is adapted to support a sidewise opening book,
where without the attachment, it could only sup port a sheet of paper or'a note book. The attachment is removably secured to the copy holder, and when in use it is secured to the movable portion of the copy holder, and when not in use it may be secured to the stationary portion of the copy holder. Y
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which novel mechanism is used for holding the line indicator. on the attachment in a fixed position while mov-.
ing the attachment and the book carried thereby upwardly step by step so that the line indicator will progressively indicate successive lines on the books of various sizes. 7
Still a further object of the invention is to provide an attachment which may be inclined at the desiredangle with respect to the movable portion Moi the copy holder so that the operator'may bring the book into a position directly above the typewriter, thus materially aiding'the operator in reading the page being copied.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of i the device will be particularly pointed out in 5 the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a typewriter 10 and a copy holder showing the attachment operatively secured thereto;
Figure 2is a perspective view of the rear of a copy holder showing the attachment mounted in inoperative'position;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front view of the attachment and copy holder, portions of both being broken away for the purpose of illustrating the device on a large scale;
Figure 4is a vertical section through the book holding device and line indicator;
Figure 5 is a front elevation of the attachment without the book holding device;
Figure 6'is a side View of Figure'5;
Figure 7 is a bottom plan view of Figure 5;
Figure 8 is a section along line 8-8 of Figure 5;
Figure 9 is a section along the line 9-9 Figure 3;
Figure 10 is a section through another portion of the device; and
Figure 11 is a rear elevation of the catch used for holding the folding book shelf in inoperative position.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a standard copy holder indicated generally at 1, and in Figure 1 I show this copy holder in operative position with respect to a typewriter indicated generally at 2. Although the copy holder forms no part of my invention, I will briefly describe it in order to show how my attachment cooperates with the copy holder in order to adapt it to indicate lines to be copiedfrom a sidewise opening book. The copy holder comprises a fixed member 3 and a movable member 4. The movable member is designed to be lifted vertically step by step apredetermined distance at each step, and this is accomplished by means of ,a lever which actuates alifting mechanism not shown. A line indicator 50 6 for the, copy holder 'is pivotally carried by a frame 7 which is pivoted at 8 to the stationary member '3 of, the copy holder. A spring pressed rod 9 is pivoted at to the top of the movable member 4, and the purpose of this rod is to hold sheets of paper or a note book from which copying is to be done.
In order to adapt the device to support a sidewise opening book I provide an attachment one part of which is shown in detail in Figures 5 to 7 inclusive. The attachment comprises two hookshaped arms 11 and 12 that are designed to be removably secured to the rod 9 when the attachment is to be used. When the attachment is not in use the hook- shaped arms 11 and 12 may be secured to the frame 7 as shown in Figure 2, so as to dispose the attachment at the rear of the copy holder. In the first instance the attachment is carried by the movable member 4, and is raised when the member 4 is raised, while in the second instance the attachment is carried by the stationary member 3 and remains in'the same position even though the member 4 may-beraised and lowered.
At the lower ends of the arms 11 and 12-I dispose a book-supporting back 13, and a swingable book-supporting shelf 14 is hinged to theba-ck 13 at 15. Figure 7 clearly illustrates how the lower ends of the arms 11 and 12 are bent for providing stops 16 and 1'7, and these stops are inclined at an acute angle with respect to the arms 11 and 12 so that the shelf 14 when in open position will also extend at an acute angle with respect to the back 13.
Iprovide means for swinging the lower endof the attachment away from the member 4 at an angle so that the typist can incline the book at the desired angle. This is accomplished by sleeves 18 and 19 that are slidable on the arms 11' and 12, and that are connected by a cross piece 20. Each sleeve 18 and 19 carries a foot 21 that has a rounded end 22', see Figure 6, for bearing against the front surface of the member 4. It is obvious that as the sleeves 18 and 19 are moved up toward the top of thearms 11 and 12, the feet 21 will cause the attachment to swing away from the member 4 at a greater angle. In this simple way not only the desired angle of the attachment can be obtained, but also the sidewise opening book itself may be moved. toward the typist where the printing on the book can be more readily seen. The cross piece 20 performs the additional function of acting as an auxiliary back supporting member for the book and cooperates with the back 13 in this respect.
I provide means for holding the book in open position on the back 13, and this means also carries the line indicator for the book. In Figures 3 and 41 show a bar 21 pivoted to the topof the member 4 at 22, see Figures 1 and 2, and I further show a second bar 23 pivoted to the shelf 14 at 25, see Figure 7. Figure 4 shows the bar 21 as being slotted at 26, and as having serrations 27 in its upper surface. Figure 7 shows the bar 23 being provided with a plurality of slots 28, and
these slots extend at a slight angle for a purpose to be hereinafterdescribed.
The book holder comprises a vertical rod 29 and having a T-shaped top 30. This top is turned so as to be in alignment with the slot 26 when the top is passed through the slot, and then the rod 29 is rotated on its axis through 90 so that the sides 31 of the top will straddle the sides of the bar 21. Figure 3 clearly shows this arrangement, an d also shows the vertical rod 29 extending through the slot 26. The under surface of the top 30 is inclined as at 32, see Figure 4, for
the purpose of providing two teeth that will enter the various serrations 2 7. These teeth permit the rod 29 to be moved toward the member 4 but prevent movement in the opposite direction unless the top is lifted so as to free the serrations.
The lower end of the rod 29 is provided with a hand grip 33 and the portion of the rod disposed adjacent to the hand grip is removably receivable in any one of the slots 28 in the bar 23. It is obvious that when the book holder is used that the bars 21 and 23 are swung from the positions shown in Figure 2 into positions where they will extend forwardly from the copy holder and from the shelf 14.
The bottom edges of the leaves of a book 34 shown in Figure 1 are held in open position by an angle-shaped member 35, see Figure 3, that is rigidly secured to the rod 29 by means of a sleeve .36. The bottom side 37 of the angle member 35 is positioned so as to be disposed slightly above the shelf 14 whenthe latter is in open position.
The top edges of the sidewise opening book 34 are likewise held in open position by a second angle member 38 that is slidably mounted on the rod 29 by means of a sleeve 39. It will be noted that the bottom side 37 of the member 35 and the top side v40 of the member 38 are provided ,with recesses 41 and .42, see Figure 4, for the purpose of receiving the book hinge. 'The top member 3 m b eui rldy ad u e i ac ammodate books of difi'erent sizes.
1 1 Sh m an f nd cat ng t e in bein copied, and reference to FiguresBand 4 will show that I provide a sleeve 43 that is slidable on the ed 2. b t ir ii a nga w t the o so as to tend to remain in the position into which it is moved. A second sleeve 44 is secured to the sleeve 43 and is disposed at right angles thereto so as to slidably carry the line indicator 45. Iihe line indicator 45 is adjustable laterally in the sleeve 44 so as to accommodate itself to books of different widths.
I p ovide v l an simple m ans o hold n the line indicator 45 against movement, or in the same position, while the member 4 and the attachment carrying the book are raised step by step. In Figure 3 a cord 46 is secured to a bracket 4'7 which in turn is attached to the bottom of the stationary member 3 of the copy holder. The upper end of 'the cord is inserted in a. V shaped clamp 48, see Figure 9, and the clamp in turn has its side 49 soldered or otherwise secured to a knob 50. The other-side 51 of the am 4 is d signed to b move t eripping position von the cord 46 when a set screw 52 is tightened. When the set screw 52 is loosened the cord ,46 may be removed from the clamp. The clamp can be secured to the cord at any desired position, and then held in this position by the set screw 52. It willnow ,be seen a as e mb r 4 nd th bo ttachmen are raised the cord or string 46 will hold the line indicator 45 from raising, and this will .cause the line indicator to slide .on the rod 29 and to indicate the line being copied, as the rod is o e u wa d y with t e membe I u t e sh w no e mean .f sup or in either cover of the book in spaced relation with respect to the arms 11 and 12. For example, in Figure 1 I show the greater portion of the book 34 disposed on the left hand side of the rod 29. In order to bring the right hand page into a position to be parallel with the surface of the left hand page it is necessary to move the right hand cover :53 of the book away from the arm 12. This is done :by ,a leaf spring 54 which is ttac ed to t b tom o the a 12 at 155.. n whieh is .slidabl in s e v 56. 1 l tt being carried by the arm 12. A hand grip 57 is secured to the-top of the spring, see Figure 5, and this grip has a pin 58, seeFigure 6, that enters any one of adesired number of openings 59 provided in thearms 11 and 12. The hand grip may be moved downwardly and secured in place by the pin 58, and this will cause the portion of the spring below the sleeve 56 to buckle as shown in Figure 1 and to support the book cover 53. A similar spring is provided on the arm 11 and corresponding reference numerals will be given. This spring is used when the greater portion of the book is disposed on the right hand side of the rod 29 rather than on the left.
In Figures'2 and 11 I show a catch 60'pivoted to the arm 11 at 61, and this catch has a U- shaped portion 62 for engaging with the shelf 14 when the latter is swung into closed position. The catch 60 holds the shelf in closed position. i In Figure 10 I show anovel manner of pivotally securing the bar 23 to the shelf 14. The shelf is countersunk as at 63, and the bar 23 has a countersunk recess 64 for receiving the countersunk portion 63 of the shelf. A screw 65 is passedthrough the line of openings in the shelf and in the bar and a nut 66 is threaded on the screw and bears against a spring washer 67 which in turn bears against the bar 23. The countersinking of the bar 23 at 64 does away with the necessity of'providing a washer between the bar 23 and the shelf 14.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood. I
When the device is used the hook-shaped arms 11 and 12 are attached to the rod 9, and then the sleeves 18 and 19. are moved on the arms 11 and 12 so as to extend the attachment at the desired angle with respect to the member 4. The book 34 is now placed in position and the book holder is secured to the bars 21 and 23. The string 46 is now attached to the line indicator 45 after the indicator has been moved into the desired position. If the leaf springs 54 are needed to support either cover on the book, they can be adjusted in the manner already indicated.
, The device is now. ready for use and the book.
will be raised lineby line as the lever 5 is actuated. The indicator 45 will be held'in the same shelf 14 is swung into closed position and the catch 60 holds the shelf in this position. The bars 21 and 23 are also swung into inoperative position. It is obvious that if the operator does not wish to dispose the attachment on the back of the copy holder when the attachment is not in use, this need not be done.
In Figure 3 the indicator 45 is shown moved slightly to the right in the sleeve 44. It is possible to move the indicator 45 either to the left or to the right, and in this way accommodate books of different widths. The purpose of inclining the slots 28 is to cause the rod 29 to be forced toward the closed end of the slot when the rod is urged outwardly by the pressure of the book. Figure 1 shows how the book is held in open position, and it will be noted that the book will be forced against the member 35, and this in turn will tend to move the rod 29 away from the member 4. It is this movement that will cause the rod 29'tofcome'to rest at the closed end of the slot 28 because the slots are inclined in the manner shown in Figure 7.
I The shelf 14 has a recess 24 centrally disposed thereinforreceiving the rod 29.
