UNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE of one-fourth to Griffin T.
Hawkins, onefourth to Ira 0. Carter, and one-fourth to Elias Isaac, Lake Charles, La.
4 Claims.
The invention relates to a multiple clamp casing head control for gas wells and has for its primary object the provision of a device of this character wherein a long string of liner casing,
6 tubing or pipe may be held in a positive position and supported without danger of slipping caused by weight, or lifting caused by excessively high gas pressure or sudden uplift or jolts from drilling or explosions, the control being of novel construction.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a control of this character wherein the construction thereof is of a kind employing a gate valve made with several'sections suitable for complete make-up to control the flow of wild oil or gas wells, whether flowing natural or on fire, the control being especially for emergency control.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a control of this character which is comparatively simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and effective for its purposes, readily and easily applied, strong, durable, positive in its gripping action, and inexpensve to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in-the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 6 showing a slight modification.
Figure 9 is a sectional view on the line 99 of Figure 8.
Figure 10 is a sectional view on the line 10--10 of Figure 8.
Figure 11 is a plan view of a further modified form of clamping plate.
Application December 4, 1933, Serial No. 700,894
Figure 12 is a sectional view on the line 12--l2 of Figure 11.
Figure 13 is a view similar to Figure 4, showing a slight modification.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the control device comprises a series of tubular sections 10 and 11, respectively, each preferably in halves l2 and 13, interfitted by the ribs 14 and made secure by fasteners 15 in their interfitted relation to each other, these fasteners being passed through companion ears 16 exteriorly on the halves of said section.
The section 10 has a central bore 17 smaller than the central bore 18 in the section 11, which latter bore receives the outer casing 19, while the bore 1'? in the section 10 receives the inner tubing 20 of well equipment.
Formed diametrically opposite each other in these sections 10 and 11 are sockets 21 for accomodating clamping plates or jaws 22, each having a T-shaped slot 23 in its back and opening through opposite edges for the fitting therein of the headed connecting end 24 of a set screw 25, the latter being threaded in the companion sections 10 and 11 and at its outer end is formed with a wrenchengaging head 26. The plates or jaws 22 are provided with rounded serrated gripping faces 27 for biting engagement with the casing 19 or tubing 20.
The sections 10 and 11, at their meeting ends, are formed with external annular flanges 28 through which are passed fasteners 29 for the detachable coupling of said sections 10 and 11 together. The meeting ends of the sections 10 and 11 are fitted with packings 30, one embracing the tubing 20 and the other embracing the casing 19 so as to eliminate leakage at these embracing points.
The section 11 has fitted therewith an end ring 31 by fasteners 32 and carried by the end of said section 11 next to the ring 31 is a packing 33 to avoid leakage at this point. The meeting ends of the sections 10 and 11 are interfitted with each other by the annular flange 34 and the ring 31 is interfitted with the section 11 by the annular flange 35.
Above the section 10 is a gate valve head 36 having therein a manually controlled gate valve operable from a stem 37 and this gate valve (not shown) controls the flow of gas or oil from a well. The head is joined with the section 10 by the fasteners 38 passed through the external annular flanges 39 on the said head and section, respectively, whiie the end of the, section next to the head 36 has fitted therein a packing 40 embracing the tubing 20 to prevent leaking of fluid between the said section and the tubing 20, as be apparent from Figure 5 of the drawzngs.
In Figures 8 to 10- there is shown a slight modifled form of clamping plate or jaw 41, this being preferably of disk form having the concaved serrated gripping face 42, while the opposite face carries lugs 43, these being adapted to fit sockets =24 in the wall of either section carrying said clamping plates or jaws, it being seen that the lugs 43 will prevent any twisting or turning of the plate or jaw 41 when the set screw for the operation thereof is turned. v
In Figures 11 and 12 thereis shown a further modified form of clamping plate or jaw 45, the same being of substantially oval formation and on the gripping face having the serrations 4G arranged as shown in Figure 11, so that a firm andpositive grip may be had by the plate or jaw in its use.
The head is formed with a. T connection 47, of conventional kind, below the gate valve for the joining of an oil or gas line with said head.
The clamping plates or jaws are distributed throughout the iength of the sections 10 and 11 and in their use both the casing 19 and the tubing 20 will be positively held and supported without danger of slipping caused by weight or lifting caused by excessively high gas pressure from below, or jolts from drilling or explosions. The device constitutes a coupling between said oasing 19 and tubing 20 and also with the head 36.
In Figure 13 of the drawings there is'shown a slight modification, wherein each section 49 is made solid and of tubular form, with the clamping jaws or plates 50 pocketed as at 51, these .iaws or plates being acted upon by the adjusting screws 52 which are disposed diametrically opposite each other and workabie from without, as should be clearly apparent.
A firm and positive clamping action will be had irrespective of any irregularity in the conformation of the casing or tubing and the fiow of fluid, either gas or oil, from a well can be positively controlled in the use of the device.
