Original application M 281,561. Divided and 1929, Serial No. 3
4 Claims.
My invention aims to provide improvements in quick detachable lamp devices particularly, though not exclusively, for use in connection with illumination of radio and like dials.
In the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention:-
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the dial mechanism as it appears when attached to the panel of a radio receiver;
Fig. 2 is a section taken through the panel and showing parts of the device in cross-section and parts in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the rear of the lamp mounting and the support therefor; and
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3, the lamp being shown in elevation.
This application is a division of my application Serial No. 281,561, filed May 29, 1928, which has issued into United States Letters Patent No. 1,751,658, dated March 25th, 1930.
As the invention pertaining to this application is directed primarily to a quick detachable lamp device for illumination of dials of radio and like apparatus, I shall not describe in detail the particular dial shown. The drum type dial 1 is mounted in back of a panel 2 and a portion thereof is exposed through the opening 3 in the panel,
as shown in Figure 1.
The dial 1 may be illuminated on its face or, if it is made of translucent material, through it as desired. In the illustrative embodiment of my invention I have shown the dial illuminated upon its face by means of a quick detachable lamp 9 unit'mounted as shown in described in the a divided.
The quick detachable lamp unit selected for illustration has a socket 4 into which is threaded an incandescent lamp- 5 (Fig. 4) which makes contact with the terminals 6 and '7 (Figs. 3 and 4) for completing an electric circuit through the lamp. To provide for quick attachment or removal of the unit for changing thelamp I have secured a rubber ring or washer 8 to the socket 4. This ring or washer is flexible and has a pair of yieldable flanges 9 which engage the opposite faces of the bracket 10 and hold the unit in the 'desired position. With this or a similar construction employing two flanges which may make frictionalcontact with the bracket 10'I can remove or attach the unit at will without the use of any instruments and without the necessity of complicated attachment of any part of the entire lamp unit to the supporting means. The de- 55 vice is self-contained and is assembled at the Fig. 2 and more fully pplication from which this is ay 29, 1928, Serial No. this application July 22,
. having a relatively thin edge portion defining a marginal side thereof, a lamp socket having provision for direct attachment thereto of the leads for energizing the lamp carried thereby, means for removably securing said lamp socket to said edge portion by lateral movement toward said marginal side of said support, said means comprising an attaching member of resilient material carried by said socketto form a unit therewith, said attaching member being formed with a laterally extending slot opening on the exterior thereof to provide a pair of resilient, laterally extending flanges for removably and frictionally gripping the opposite sides of said edge portion of said supporting member, whereby'said unit may be readily-attached to and removed from the edge portion of said supporting member while said leads are attached to said socket.
2. An illuminated radio dial installation or the like having, in combination, a supporting member having a relatively thin edge portion defining a marginal side thereof, a lamp socket having a shell of conductive material adapted to receive the base of a lamp, said lamp socket having provision for direct connection thereto of leads for energizing said lamp, means for removably securing said lamp socket to said edge portion by lateral movement toward said marginal side of said support, said means comprising an insulating and attaching member of resilient material surrounding said shell and directly carried thereby to form a unit therewith, said insulating and attaching member formed witha relatively deep slot opening on its exterior surface to provide a pair of resilient, laterally extending flanges for removably and frictionally gripping the opposite sides of said edge port'on of said supporting mem- 51) her, whereby said unit may be readily attached to and removed from the edge of said supporting member while said leads are attached to said-- socket. 3. illuminated radio dial installation or the 55 like having, in combination, a supporting member having a relatively thin edge portion formed with a notch opening on said edge, a lamp socket adapted to 'be received within said notch for positioning said socket relative to said member, said socket having provision for direct attachment thereto 0! the leads for energizing the lamp carried thereby, an attaching member of resilient material carried by said socket to form a unit therewith, said attaching member surrounding said socket and being formed with a circumferential slot to provide a pair of resilient, laterally extending, circumferential flanges for removably and frictionally gripping the opposite sides of said edge portion of said supporting member, whereby said unit may be readily attached to and removed from the edge portion of said supporting member and said socket may be frictionally held indifierent positions of rotative adjustment axially thereof within said notch.
4. A lamp socket assembly adapted to be attached to and removed from a relatively thin edge portion of a support by lateral movement toward and away from said support comprising a lamp socket having provision for direct attachment thereto of the energizing leads for the lamp carried thereby, said socket including an attaching member of resilient material, said attaching member being formed with a laterally extending slot opening on the exterior thereof to provide a pair of resilient, laterally extending flanges for removably and frictionally gripping the opposite sides of the edge portion of the support.
