Application Mar uis, 1932,;Se1flal.-N0 599 93'z i 2 Claims.
This invention relates to power tools.
This invention has utility when embodied in mills, especially coffee mills for household use.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention as a comminuting device or mill for household use, say in the grinding of coffee;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view from the left of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line IIIIII, Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line IV-IV, Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the motor.
At a convenient location, say upon wall 1, by screws 2 is mounted flange 3 having central seat 4 to sleeve boss 5. This boss 5 is a sleeved extension of housing section 6 having companion housing section '7, with bearing extension 8 therefrom in alignment with the boss 5. This extension 8 is integral with flare mill housing section 9. This section 9 has semi-circular flange 10. An additional mill housing section complementary to the section 9 has semi-circular flange 11 complemental to the flange 10, with mill housing section 12 opposing the housing section 9, and supply duct section 13 to mill chamber 14 in the housing 9, 12. The housing 9 in alignment with the boss or sleeve 5 and bearing 8, has bearing 15 extending to internally threaded portion 16.
In this tubular boss 5 is located shaft 17 rotatable in this boss 5 as a bearing, as well as the bearings 8, 15. The housing 6, '7, provides chamber 18 for worm wheel 19 splined on the shaft 1'7.
In the housing chamber 14 fixed with shaft 17 is feeding scroll 20 to grinding disk 21 keyed with the housing 12 from which the material as subdivided coffee beans passes over toward the housing section 9, and there is directed by vane carrying disk 22 as an opposing burr disk to the disk 21. This disk 22 is keyed to the shaft 1'7 and is normally axially adjusted as to its engagement with the disk 21. As the material is comminuted in this housing chamber 14, vanes on the disk 22 direct this subdivided material for passing from this mill housing by port 24, centrally of the sectional flange 10, 11.
The opening adjustment between the burrs 21, 22, is determined by the axial play of the shaft 1'7. This shaft 1'7 has threaded extension 25 having loosely thereon sleeve 26 externally threaded and engaging with threaded portion 16 on the extension from the housing 12. This sleeve 26 has integral flange or ratchet wheel 27. The threaded portion 25 extends through this sleeve and ratchet portion and there carries nut 28. The shaft 1'7 is accordingly free to rotate relatively to this ratchet wheel 2'7. Fulcrum pin29 mounts dog 30, normally urged by torsion spring 31 into engagement with the ratchet 2'7. It is thus seen, by lifting the pawl 30 and rotating the ratchet 2'7, the sleeve 26 may be axially adjusted in extension from the housing 12, and thus adjust clearance between the disks 21, 22, by axial shifting of the shaft 17. There is thus ready adjustment for the housewife to use in regulating the fineness for the grinding operation.
The housing sections 6, '7, oppositely from the flange 10,11, have semi-circular flange sections 33, 34, providing a seat for sleeve 35.
In this sleeve 35 is located electric motor unit 36. Electric supply lines 37 extend into this housing where switch 38 may be thrown to cut the motor into operation or shut it ofi. This sleeve 35 has top plate 39 having therein screw 40.
eatsu 's shaft 41 extending therethrough to have key connection 42 with coupling 43 having worm 44 effective in the normal direction of operation of the motor 36, to have its thrust downward against ball 45 from the rotor of the motor and the shaft 41. There is thus avoided wear at terminus 45' of the shaft from the actuating. worm 44. This worm 44 is in mash with the the worm wheel 19. Bolts 46 assemble the sections 6, '7, and bolts 47 assemble the sections 9, 12. Hinge pin 48 mounts funnel 49, having internally threaded seat 50 which may be engaged by the externally threaded neck portion 51 of the glass jar 52, say of the Mason type, and thus provide a container for the coffee or substance to be ground. This container may be readily removed and replaced and oriented from down position to upward position adjacent the motor, and there engaged by spring latch'pin 53 to hold against shifting. It is thus seen that with the container tipped away from the passage 13, coffee may be poured into the container as a charge magazine or reservoir, or a substitute filled magazine 52 may be installed. In swinging such over to charging position, this may be done rapidly without any occasion for spilling the contents.
Upon throwing the switch 38, the mill is started and the coifee automatically sliding down thereinto is ground and passes by the port 24 into receiver or glass 54.
From the flange section 10, there is depending bracket 55 having offset 56 opposing the flange 10, 11, and there having seat 57 normally upwardly thrust by compression helical spring 58 about stem 59, extending through the offset 56 to eye 60. The housewife may, by having a finger enter the eye 60, lower the seat 57 so that the glass 54 may be removed with the ground charge of coffee desired, after she has shut ofi the motor 36 by throwing the switch 38 to off position.
Screw 61 may wedge clip 62 to hold the lines 37 against transmitting pull to the terminals on the motor 36.
What is claimed and it is desired to secured' by Letters Patent is:
1. A gear housing, a mounting bracket therefor, a transmission shaft from said housing oppositely from said bracket, 'a mill mounted by the housing to be driven by said shaft, a sleeve upwardly from the housing and having an open upper end, a motor insertable into the open end of said sleeve and having connection therefrom for operating said transmission shaft, a shaft for the motor, a conductor line to the motor, and a top plate centering the motor shaft as to the sleeve, said plate including a clamping clip for anchoring the line with the housing against transmitting pull on the line to the motor.
2. A mill comprising a horizontal housing, detachable supporting means at one end of the housing, a horizontal rotary shaft inthe housing, rotary abrading means secured to the end of the shaft, cooperating abrading means secured to the interior of the housing, a supply hopper above the abrading means and extending upwardly from the housing, and an electric motor for driving the shaft and mounted on a vertical axis parallel to the supply hopper and driving the shaft between the supply hopper and the supporting means.
