In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specication and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of the car equipped with side plate constructions embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the car at the eaves of the roof,
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a side View of a portion of a side plate construction; and
Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-sectional view `of a modied form of side plate with the roof sheet and carline support made integral therewith.
The present construction comprises side plates September 17,-19 3`0Serialiu, No.4'82,422. Patent No.1,8513,655. D! this applicationy vJanuary 29,l 1932i vided and Serial- No.y

cap being spaced from the vertical flanges of the sheets far enough to afford proper clearance. The hereinbefore described side plate construcextra ange and at proper intervals.
While I have illustrated my invention as applied 'leg extending therefrom in substantially opposite direction from said web and at an upward inclination approximately equal to the pitch of a car roof, said flange having flat-bottomed depressions therein extending from side to side thereof and constituting seats for carlines, said ange extending straight between depressions and constituting at seats for roof sheets.
2. An integral metal side plate for cars having carlines with roof sheets movably arranged therebetween, said side plate comprising a substantially horizontal web, a depending leg at one end thereof, an upstanding leg at the other end thereof and a flange at the top of said last mentioned leg extending therefrom in substantially opposite direction from said web and at an upward inclination approximately equal to the pitch of a car roof, said flange having depressions therein constituting seats for said carlines, the portions of the flange located between said depressions being flat and adapted to movably support said roof sheets.
3. A metal side plate for cars comprising a substantially horizontal web, a depending leg atone end thereof, an upstanding leg at the other end thereof and a separate angle member secured to said last mentioned leg with its upperflange extending over the top thereof in substantially opposite direction from said web and at an upward inclination approximately equal to the pitch of a depending leg at one v car roof, said angle member having depressions at intervals in the top thereof constituting seats for carlines, the spaces between said depressions being greater than the width thereof 4. As an article of manuiacture,*a member for mounting carlines and roof sheets 'on the side plates of a car, said member comprising an angle plate with one leg adapted to be secured to a side plate and the other leg forming an oblique angle therewith, said last mentioned leg having ilatbottomed depressions arranged at intervals and shapeclto-constitute seats for carlines and portions extending straight between said seats and constituting flat supports for the ends of rooi sheets. y
5. As an article of manufacture, a member for mounting carlines and root` sheets on the side plates of a car, said member comprising an angle -plate with one leg adapted to be secured to a side plate and the other leg inclining upwardly at an angleA substantially Vequal to the pitch of a car roof, said last mentioned leg having flat-bottomed depressions arranged at intervals and shaped to constitute seats for carlines, and the portions between said seats being flat and constituting supports for the ends of roof sheets.
6. A metal side plate for cars comprising a substantially horizontal web, a depending leg at one edge of said web, an upstanding leg at the other edge thereof and a continuous combined carline and roof sheet supporting flange at the top of said last mentioned leg, said flange being offset vvertically at `regular intervals throughout itsv length to provide widely spaced flat-bottomed carline supporting seats at one elevation alternating with relatively long flat-topped roof sheet supporting seats at a different elevation.
