Description

AQ MBHARRY. Portable Derrioks.
No. 198,895. Patented .Ian-. 1,1873.
INVENTOR' f" ATTORNEYZ N PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES; PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER MEHARRY, OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE DERRICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,895, dated January 1, 1878; application filed August 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MEHALRRY, of La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Portable Derricks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents the upright or main support, made of gas-pipe or othersuitable tubing, of any desired dimensions. Being hollow, this upright can be slipped down over an iron stake fastened in the ground firmly in the edge of the pavement, or wherever needed for use. To one side of this tubular upright A is clamped or otherwise fastened a frame, B, in which is mounted an ordinary windlass, 0, having crank G, ratchet a, and pawl 12, substantially as shown.
On the side of the Windlass the upright A is braced by means of a bow-brace, E, to with stand the strain that comes upon it.
D represents the top beam of the derrick, provided with a bowed brace, D, on top.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is I.
This beam is, near each end, provided with a mortise, in which a pulley, c, is mounted for the passage of the hoisting-rope d. The'beam D is pivoted in a metal. loop, G, which is formed with a round shank, G, to be inserted in the upper end of the upright A; and the beam is held stationary, in proper position for hoisting, by means of a hook, H, pivoted to the brace E, and hooking over a screw, f, or its equivalent, in the under side of the beam. The rope d is fastened to the Windlass G, and passed over the pulleys e, as shown.
When the article is raised by the derrick the hook H is released, and the beam D can then be swung to either side, as required.
This derrick can be readily taken down and apart, so as to occupy but little space and it can be easily put up again, when needed for use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A portable derrick, consisting of a tubu- "lar upright, with side frame, carrying a windlass, and a top beam, pivoted in a metal loop,
turning in and removable from the upper end of the upright, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the tubular upright A, frame B, Windlass O, and bow-brace E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
ALEXANDER MEHARRY. Witnesses:
EDWARD GROENENDYKE, CHARLES GROENENDYKE.
