lMPROVEMENT- IN WHIFFLETREE PLTES AND CLEVISES. y
Specifioation forming art of Letters Patent N0. 198,771, datecl J ahuary 1, 1878 applioatio'ri filed T0 all whom z't mag; concem:
Be it kn0wn that I, HENRY A. LUTTGENS, of Paterson, New Jersey, h2we invented 0erta1'11 Improvements in Whiffletree Platos and cured to the oross-bar by meaus of a plate fastened to the top 0f the cross-loar. The plante is prov1'decl With a hole, whioh oont-ains rubber paoking, supporting the whiffletree and pressing the same to the under sicle of the olev1's. The operiing of the olevis is made suffioiently large to Ienalole the whiffletree to move freely within the elevis, and the whifliletree is held in oontaet With the pin-formed side of ehe elevis by means of a olasp, whioh is fastened to the faoe of the whifiiletree. The opening between the top of the plante and the under side of the olevis is equal to the thiok ness of the whiflletree, and the plate is lengthened by projeotiug ears, whioh serve to preserve the whifiiletree in a horizontal posit ion er parallel with the oross-bar. A wearingplate is inserted into the face of ehe whiffletree.
In the .aooompanying drawings, Figures 1 .and 2 are perspeotive views of portions of a whiffletree-and oross-bar, w1't-h the impr'ovements attaohed. Fig. 3 is a vertioal se(ztion of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 are plan and, elevation, representingthe plante. Fig. 6 shows 1;he olasp; and Fig; 7 an elevation of the olevis, w1'th both limbs extendecl for bolting to the eross-bar.
B represents a porbion of a whiffletree, anal A a portlon of the cross-loar of a. shaft,to whioh the whiffleoree is seeured. Olev1's G is secured. by holt Z to the oross-bar, and also loy the end of pin e, whieh latter is part of the olevis. 'Ihe pin e is formecl with a shoulder ancl threaded end, and lt asses through a hole in 2b proj eotion, p, of plate G, 120 whioh it is seoured.

by a nut; or the elevis O is extended, es shown in Fig. 7, and both ends ofthe Same are seou red direotly to the eross=bar A by means of holt l. If preferred, one or both enc ls of tl1e elevis may loe widened, so as to receix e two bols.
Plato G is seeured to the top of oross-bar A. It is provided With a hole to reoeive paeking 01 rubloer h, whioh supports whiffletree B. The plate :is also provided With ears m n, whioh reaeh 130 the uncler side of ehe whifiletree B. The projeotion 19 of plate G is omittecl when-the olevis C is made as showu inFig. 7.
A wear'mg-plate, k, is insertecl ino the faoe of whiflletree B,Whl0h bears against pin e, and aolasp, f, is seoured. to the faoe of whiffletre B, whioh holds it in oon'taot with pin e.
The oonneotion between the whifliletree and eross-bar, as ordinarily eonstrueted, eonsists of a holt whioh asses through the center of, and whieh is seeured to, the whiffl'etree, ohe holt moving in aholeinthe oenter of the oross-bar with the movements of the whiffletree. A mode of seouring the holt to the whiffletree in this osition, by means of a. olip, is shown in the patent to D. Wiloox, N0. 17 2,537 The connection when So made plaoes the holt below the point of draft, .and lt is liable to wem so as 130 oause the whiffletree to lean forwaxd. T0 insure safety, the holt is oftemprovided With a olevis plaoed horizontally, whioh is of a lengbh so reaoh over the top of ehe whiffletree and below the bottom of the oross-bar, so thab the top and botoom of the oonneocingloolt pass through this olevis.
T0 provide a oonneoi0n between the erossbar A and whiffietree B Whioh Will maintain ehe Whiflletree in its proper position without leaning is the objeot of the devioe herein desoriloed, ancl whieh is attained by p1aoing a olevis, O, vertioally, and by s'eouring both ends of the clevis direotly or by means of the plate G to fih6 cross bar A. The whifflet-ree B, whioh presses, whe11 in use, against the pinshaped side e of 'the elevis O, is not able to 1Dove o1 displaoe he same, and the clevis 0 offers equal resistanue to bending ab both of the eorners 0 and r; therefore, the elevis when so plaeed. will preserve the whiffleree B in its proper osition, sinoe the pin e is thereby brought direotly in front o f the whiffl etree B,
