Description
F'. J. HUEFNER COLLAPSIBLE BOAT Jan. 8, 1935.
Filed oct. 25, 1935 INVENTOR; PHIL/P J. HUEFNER BY 0m/M M/z ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 8, 1935 d ApplicationA October- 25.,
The objct'jpf my invention 1s-'t devises' co1@l lapsibleboat More specicallyrn invention `:rejlates to sinall boats or skiffs thataregmade infs'ections thatare 'selectively'secure'd together. ifIhe purpose of making, particularly a small boat knocked down is that it may be conveniently carried or transported on an ordinary vehicle, such as an automobile.
The boat of the type, herein described, may be taken apart or disassembled, so that the entire boat may be secured to a. rack on the rear of an automobile. The boat is preferably made 'of metal, although it can also be made of wood. It is made in sections or compartments, each one of which is water proof, and of such weight and construction that it will float on the surface of water. The purpose of this is to prevent the sinking of the entire boat, in the event that water leaks into one section.
Among the further objects are to supply del tachable air containers to be positioned in the boat to add to its buoyancy.
Still a further and one of the principal objects is to secure a seat over the jointure between both sections, in such a manner that thev seat supporting means also functions as section securing means. The boat is so constructed that it may be made of few and simple parts that lend themselves readily to multiple production. The boat may be cheaply made.
With these and other objects in view, my invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the drawing, in which Fig. 1 isa plan view of my device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental sectional elevation taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Numeral 4 designates the front section and numeral 5 the rear section. `Numeral 6 designates the bottom of the front section 4, numerals 'l the sides of the front section 4 and numeral 8 the rear wall of the front section 4.r Numeral 9 designates the bottom of the rear section 5, numerals 10 the sides of the rear section 5, numeralll the rear wall of the rear section 5 and numeral 12 the front Wall of the rear section 5.
'I'he front wall 12 of the rear section 5 and the rear wall 8 of the front section 4 are of substantially the same height, size and shape and are bent centrally at their tops, so that the top edge of both walls is lower than the sides 7 ofV the front section 4 and the sides 10 vof the rear 19er, serial Nol `695,101` f l" is extended slightly longitudinally so as to come 10 y into frictional engagement with the forward portion of the bottom 9. Numerals 14 designate the conventional ribs andv numerals 15 the conventional oarlocks.
In the extreme forward portion of the front 15 section 4 is connected the plate 16, which is secured to the sides 7 in a plane parallel to the bottom by any conventional means, such as solderlng. Numeral 17 designates an air container ofV the same shape and size as the space between 20 U the plate 16, the sides 7 and the bottom 6. The air containerfl' is slid from the rear under the plate 16 and remains there, while the boat is in use in frictional engagement with the plate 16, the bottom 6 and the sides 7. Numeral 18 des- 25 ignates an air container, which is positioned in the rear portion of the rear section 5, and is in sliding engagement on the bottom 9 and in sliding engagement with thesides 10, and when in y position comes in contact withthe rear wall 11.
Numeral 19 designates a plate that is in sliding engagement with thev sides 10 immediately above the air container 18. The plate 19 performs the function of a seat for a passenger as does the plate 16, previously described. A third air container 20 is positioned in the rear rportion of the front section 4 in physical engagement with the rear wall 8 of the front section 4.
The top of the rear wall 8 of the front section 4 is bent over in a state of parallelism with the bottom v6,4so thatit comes incontact with the upper side of the air container 20. Numeral 21 designates a seat, which is supported on two U shaped elements 22. The parallel portions of the U shaped elements 22- are spaced apart, ka distance 45 equal to the width of the air container 20 and the rear wall 8 and the front wall 12, so that when the lU shaped elements 22, which are secured to the seat 21 are placed in position they are in frictional. engagement with the forward side of the air container 20 and the forward side of the inner portion of the front wall 12. In order to positively secure the U shaped elements 22 to the air container 20 and the front wall 12, screws 23 are employed, oneof each of which passes through the I lower portion of one of the parallel portions of the U shaped elements 22. l
Numeral 24 `designates a plate of wood or other similar material, which is placed j between the inner surface of the front wall 12 and the parallel portions of the U shaped elements 22.` The screws 23 come into frictional engagement with the plate 24 and force it against the front wall 12. By this y 1 means the seat 21 is secured to the boat and the iront section 4 andtherear section. 5-othe boat are additionally"securedftogeliettfiA Numeral 25 designates the conventional grating ,positioned on the iloor of the front section 4 numeral 26 designates a like grating positioned" on theiioor of the rear section 5. Obvihlisly, mi'
boa-t may be made of a plurality of rather than two, as shown in the drawing as inbefore described. In eachjmstamdeafai however, be separate compartments and. wi11 he. secured together as indicated. By the between the sections-indicated, .the sides tom are .brought iii-,close f rietional e with each other andepreventwatgnir A into the sections through the joininn'as;
` What Iy Claim maman; tafsecrre ,1m-.WMS Patent is: if l;
A boat comprising water tight, detachable air containers positioned in each section of said boat, each section ofI said boat being selectively detachable from its adjoining section, section jointure means, seats secured in said boat over the jointure between adjacent sections, one of said detachable air containers being positioned under each, but independent of said seats, the section jointure means being U shaped elnmo'ntasecuredttothe seatsandtheld, in irietional mettaient-wim geheimnis, and said air containers positioned under saidfseats,
