In the use and operation of my template and, au the manner f d p c ti sa bent valve, stem in the field from a .convertiblevalve "stem" with which the inner tube is normally equipped,"
is as follows:
Let us assume that the double bent valve stem D attached to an inner tube 11 which has been rendered useless is to be replacedat a service station in the field. The "service station operative, in order to determine valvestemarms d and d andthe location of the point d at which the bend is to be made inthevalve stem,-as-well as the angle of said bend; applies thetemplate to the valve stem by having the flange or abutment a engage against the flat side of the valve stem arm d, the flange b engage over the arm d, and the flange c engage over the arm d -after which'the member'Bis moved to the right until the end of the flange ,b abuts against the valve stem within the bight of the ,bend dtherein. The indicator b will thereupon be found to point to one of the-vertical columns of the indicia a and the particular number in said column in the horizontal row corresponding to the size of the valve equivalent to d and d p-The indicationof the pointerc' upon the alphabetical indicia b informs the operative as to the setting to be made on the bending toolfor reproducing a bend in the valve stem corresponding; to that in; the one which is to be replaced; bending tool settings forduplicating a size 76 ,1 convertible .valve stem are-13- and I;' fora number 7'7 valve stem 18 and I and for a number 78 .valve stem'26 and I. The indicia 0 directly indicates the length of 'the arm d of the valvestem. This latter reading, however, is not so important, since the indicia a indirectlydetermines thisvfact by indicating the size ofvalve stem'to be used and the distance between the bend d. and they substantially right angular bend d .l I
. The device is exceedinglysimple in' construc tion, can be cheaply and accurately manufactured, and its manner of use-can be quickly imparted to any unskilled operative in a service station, thereby obviating-improper bending of convertible valve stems in the field with the attendant annoyance and inconvenience resulting therefrom, not to mention the intrinsic loss due to rendering valueless valve stems which are improperly bent at the hands of an'inexperienced operative. l
The invention, it isto be understood, is susceptible of modiflcation'and I therefore-do-not wish to be limited to the details'of construction herein disclosed, as the same may 'be varied within the range of mechanical skill-without departing'from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is;
