It is the primary object of this invention to provide a new, simple, convenient, inexpensive and improved means for connecting the supporting coil springs at the ends of a series and the 1 intermediate coil spring of such a series in a bed bottom or the like, to a woven wire webbing to support the webbing, and to be spaced from the upper marginal frame while permitting each of the intermediate coils the freedom of a tilting or rocking movement with respect to the woven wire webbing.

Referring to thedrawing, in Fig. 1 itwill noted that I, use a bed bottom for the purpose of illustrating my invention. The device consists inpart of an uppermarginal frame 11.1 Frame 11 is closed with a. web of double strand woven wire fabric 12 secured at its ends to the under side of the frame angle 13 by suitablemeans which I here show to be a clamping plate 14 and held to the frame by rivets 15. The sides of the webbing are secured to the sides of the frame by passing a wire or rod through the loops of the fabric and wiring it to the. frame at 6. a The wire webbing 12 used in this invention has characteristic channel-like rows 16 extending diagonally of the marginal frame 11. i v J The lower marginal frame 17, Fig. 2, is of conventional design, having the usual series of supports 19 twisted at 22 to be substantially perpendicular with respect to the surfacing webbing l2. Apertures 24 are provided for anchoring the lower ends of the coil springs later to be described.
The intermediate compressible members between the upper marginal frame 11 and the lower marginal frame 17 comprise end coil springs 26 and intermediate coil springs 27. End coil springs 26 have their top coils 28 substantially planiform, whilefthe intermediate springs 27 have their top coils 29 slightly dishedrelative to the fabric 12. The intermediate coil springs 27 have their bends 32 so disposed as to extend into the mesh of webbing 12. These bends 32 are spaced 180 degrees apart and are preferably engaged in the channels 16 of the webbing l2.
Anchoring wires 33 are secured to the top coils 28 and are laced through the woven wire webbing loops 24 and the bends 32 of the coils 29. Thus the supporting springs are pivoted by their loop portions 32 upon' the anchor wire 33 and positioned against lateral displacement by engagement of the loops 32 in the channels between successive loops in the woven wire webbing -12.
. Since the intermediate coil springs 27 are not p laniform they are permitted to tilt or rock about the anchoring wire 33. When the webbing 12 receives the load the coil springs 27 can tilt or move to distribute it whilethe springs 26, being planiform and securely fastened to the frame 11, can only move when the entire upper frame 11 moves. In a bed bottom the combination with a woven load distributing web having a regularly channeled surface, of supporting coil springs therefor, each provided with a top coil having bends diametrically spaced thereon and interlockinglyengaged with the channels of the web to be positioned thereby, and means pivotally connecting the bent portions of said coils with said web to hold said. springs and web in predetermined relation, the portions of said end coils at both sides of the diameter upon which said bends are located being spaced from said web for a substantial distance, whereby to permit freedom of tilting movement of said end coils and springs with respect to said web.
2. Ina bed bottom, the combination with a woven web of a plurality of supporting coil springshaving end coils provided with diametrically opposite bends engaging said web, and an anchoring wire extending consecutively through the bends of a series of said coil springs and interwoven with said web, whereby to anchor said coil springs with respect thereto, the portions of said end coils at both sides of the anchoring wire being spaced from said web for a substantial dissprings aligned in rows with said end coil springs and having their top coils provided with bends projecting axially from the springs at diametrically opposite points, anchoring wires extending through the bends of the top coils of the intermediate springs of eachsuch row, said anchoring wires being connected with the top coils of :said end springs, whereby to ,.be positioned with reference to said'fr'ame'; andgaiwoven wireweb- "bing connected with said frame and' engaging "said bends, said anchoring wires being inter-q woven with said webbing between successive springs whereby to position said springs respect-r: ingv said webbing and thetop coils of said inter-c portions; ateach" side of the anchoring wires spaced from said'web mediate springs having the respective topcoils individually connected with said frame, a series of intermediate springs aligned in rows with the end springs and having their top coils provided with bends projecting axially from the springs at diametrically opposite points, anchoring wires extending through the bends of the top coils of the intermediate springs of each row, saidjwiresbeing,connected with the top coils of said end sp'ringsQwhereby to be positioned with reference to'said frame,
and a woven wire webbing connected with said frame and engaging said bends, said wires being interwoven with said webbing between successive springs whereby to position said springs respecting said webbing while permitting said springs freedom of pivotal movement about the respective wires, the top coil of each of said intermediatesprings being formed to diverge from said webbing in both directions from the points of engagement of the said bends therewith.
