The subject idea of the" invention will result more clearly from the following description of an embodiment of it which forms only one example as many other ways of carrying out my invention maybe taken without leaving'the limits of L it. At all events I wish it to be understood that Ijdo not struction shown and described in this specification, for obviously modifications will occur to a person skilled in theart.

strip at to the slots d, d, the strip 0 to'the slots e, e
and the strip nto the slots f, f and g. Obviously in practice the proceedingwill be suchthat firstly the strip p and finally the strip iwill be applied because for sake of a better pictoral effect the slots %e, d,'e and 7 extendon one side somewhat per edges such as k of the striped, m n, o are straight, while the lower ones such as] are toothed with respect to their symbolizing the ends of the branches. l
The various strips 1, m, n, 0 may be ofequal or different colors or each maybe colored in different shadowsor colors. The strip 11 may still have another color. Y i i with respect t o'each other;-,
stencil a, so that the additional strip t being col.--
ored differently than strip 0 may be threaded through all the slots s in a similarway as indicated above.
As it, is of some importance that. the strips are held securely in accurate position the size and form of the slots as well as the shape of their edges and the adjacent parts of the stencil may be varied according to the materials used. The simplest form of slots is shown in Figs. 2 and 5,
the edges u being onthe same plane and dreadjacent parts of the stencilya being in line. Ac-1 cording to Fig. 3 the p'ortionbeing adjacent to the slot 1) and being intended to be occupied by the frontportionf of the strip is somewhat pressed down so that the. edges of the slot 12 are directed obliquely with respect to the plane of stencil-a.
In a further alternative. form as illustrated by Fig. 4" the edges of slot to are somewhat displaced Sometimes, however, it maybe desirable that a strip threaded through its slotsremains slidable said slots'so that the child may shift the strip freely to and fro so that, provided different colors or illustrations are disposed along the lengthof such strip, said diiferent colors'or illustrations will readily appear at will on the frontside of the stencil when the stripis shifted to: and fro. It'is for thisreason that in' such a case a pinching'of the strip within its, slots must beavoided.
supplied in 'difierent standardized widths and 'fo'rr'nsfof their' edges and indifferent colors or, patterns and in suitable. material or maybe printed;v Preferably a'set .of strips of 'equalor different properties as setforth may be combined to a sheet which'is divided by slots or cut lines: with diiferent'spaces between them'j and, if de-- sired, of toothed or" wave-like-or other form;- with a margin'remaining atone end or both'ends 9 of said slots or cut lines. Thus the necessary strip material may be taken at will from such sheet.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 6 shows by way of example one form of a set of different strips, as to be used for carrying out my invention, these strips being joint to form a sheet of strips.. The sheet A is divided by the slots or cuts B, C, D into various strips of difierent width, but as the cuts do not extend over the .whole of said sheet A, margins E remain which are intended to be the joining element for said strips. While theseslots or cuts B are straight, the cut C is toothed and the cut D has a wavelikeform. If desired, one of the margins E may be dispensed with. xHavingfi described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A picture which consists of a stencil of any suitable material and of-oblong strips of any suitable sheet material, each of the latter being threaded through corresponding pairs of slots disposed onsaidstencil in such a way that one.
portion of each strip is situated on the face of the; stencil betweensaid slots, while the ends of :said strips freely extending beyond said slots on the:.back of the stencil, are covered by the latter, the strips being held in their accurate position by the pinching'eifect of the edges of said slots.
2. Asadevice for producing colored pictures, the combination of a stencil provided with slots of standardized dimensions and of a series of elongated strips of correspondingly standardized widths, the said slots-being opposed to each other in pairs and being arranged and shaped in such a way that they may form opposed parts of the contours of certain areas-or portions of the pic- 'ture to be produced and being disposed and dimensioned in such a way that one of said strips I The strips tobe .used' in producing pictures ac-I cording to my'invention may. be prepared and may fillout the whole length of the corresponding one of said slots when'having been threaded therethrough, the edges of said slots being narrow enough to produce a pinching eifect upon the saidstrips, while the said strips being of any color; pattern and shadow and being as wide asto conform to the lengths of the slots, which they are intended to be applied to, and having edges forming theremaining opposite parts of the contour of the said area of the picture.
