Reference is made to the above-mentioned patent to Stevenson and also to his patents numbered 1,164,026 and 1,164,028 .for purposes of, comparison and determination'of the character and scope of the present invention. It should be.
noted that in substantially thetime required for the passage'of one bar through a punching machine a pair'of car center-sill sections are completely punched not only with .alined holes through the web and all of the flanges, but with web holes out, of alinement and with the perforations either in the web or the flanges being of different diameters if desired,

The construction as thus far described, together with the operating motors, power transmitting devices, eccentric 18 and connections between the eccentrio and slide 16, are allof conventionaldesign.
Although the work may be fed through the machinaby hand, nevertheless it is preferred to use one of the various conventional automatic work feeddevices such as indicated at 19. As is well known such'a device may be a simple friction feed of the work against limiting stopsor. it may involve automatic spacing arrangements,
or templates, or both. Insofar as the present invention is concerned the particular type of automatic feed isunimportant." As shown clearly in Fig. 5 of the f drawings, the sleeve 56 is extended vertically above the hand wheel 54 a considerable distance and on thisextended portion, gear-teeth 60 arev cut and meshed with a gear 61 so that a rack bar 62 is driven through a trainv of gearing attached to the lower face of the upper plate C for the purpose of moving an adjustable punch block in the upper plate in synchronism with the movements of the adjustable die-block in the fixed table. The sleeve 56 is rotatively mounted on a spindle 64, the lower end of which is fixed in the table B. v
The two die sets 40 and 48 are for cooperation in the punching of holes in the web of the work. The next set of "dies is for cooperation in the punching of the flanges of the web. For this purpose a guide-block is secured in position on the top surface ofthe fixed table B. This guide-block has an exterior configuration in cross section corresponding to a channel- -shaped portion of the work to be punched, so .that in passing through the machine the bar lies with its web in a horizontal plane, one of its lower flanges and the opposed top flange projecting downwardly over the slightly tapered walls of the guide-block 70 (see Figs. 6'and 7). The forward end of the guide-block 70 is provided with sets of horizontally arranged dies 71 and 72 oppositely faced to contact with the inner faces of the flanges as the work passes over the block. IA. traveling rig 150, best shownin Figs. 4 and .12 of the. drawings,.is mounted for longitudinal movement on the plate C, that is. a movement transversely of the. direction of 'feed of the work. This rig comprises a bracket 151 upturned at'its forward end and having a sliding connection in a T-slotted plate 152 fixed to the forward edge of the plate C. Thevbracket 151 extends rearwardly and downwardly to a level 149 where ithas bolted upon it a housing member 153. The housing is positioned.directlybelow and" centrally of the rack bar 62 which carries the laterallyadjustable punches140. Bolts154 pass through the housing 153 and'tap into the rack bar.6 2 as clearly shown in Figs. 11 and 12. The housing 153 provides two pockets 155 and 156. Within the pocket 155 a segmental orfan gear 157 is fixed ona hollow key stud 158 which" also has secured to, it,; exteriorly of the housing, 'a
beveled pinion 160. The stud 158 isrotatively mountedin the housing 153 and may be rotated in either direction by the beveled pinion 160. The segmental gear l5'7 engages a rack member lfil which extends toward the center line of the machine and carries at its inner end a gag' member 1'62 which provides for the selective operation of vertical punches'140. Thesaid rack member carries a pointed pin 163 of a detent mechanism which alsov comprises aspring pressed plate 164' positioned in the pocket 156 and having three spaced indentations 165 for three different positions of the gag member. The shaft 174 is splined as indicated at 176 to allow a beveled pinion' 177 to .ride longitudinally thereon. A. car center-sill sections of right and left form are fed into the machine over the respective guide-blocks '70 on opposite sides of the center line. The fixed vertical dies have been set and bolted inpr'oper position on the table B and their cooperative punches bolted in 5 position on the plate C. The webs of the sepa rate car center-sill sections rest respectively on the'tops of the die-blocks in each series and the downward flanges straddle these blocks-and also" the hold-down block 46. It is usual construetion to provide a large number of perforations in the web which are in longitudinal alinement.
