JAMES OONLAN, OF KENDALL CREEK, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKED CASING-HEADS FOR OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,489, dated December 25,1877; application filed August 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,JA1v1:Es OoNLAN, of Kendall Creek, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rings for Tubing Flowing Oil-Wells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved tubing-ring; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same,
and Fig. 3 a vertical central section of the' ring seated on the casing-head and inclosing the tubing.
The same letter indicates the same part wherever it occurs in the drawings.
The object of my invention is to prevent the loss of oil while tubing is being drawn or inserted in oil-wells which flow during the process.
The nature of my invention consists in placing on top of the casing-head of an oil-well a hinged ring, consisting of two segments, and provided with a doWnwardly-proj ecting flange, which enters the upper end of the casinghead, and holds the ring securely clamped upon the outside of the tubing while this is being inserted or withdrawn.
The ordinary means of preventing the escape of oil around the tubing during its introduction or withdrawal is the employment of a ring of rubber attached to the top of the easing-head, and forcing the tubing down or up through this ring. The couplings being con siderably larger than the tubing, the rubber ring is soon destroyed by the action of the couplings upon it during the process. My hinged ring is readily attached to the tubing, can be removed or opened at pleasure, and effectually accomplishes its object at much less expense and with much greater convenience than the rubber ring.
In the drawing, A B are the jaws or segments of the ring, hinged together at a, and provided with the mortises andtenons be, to secure close union when shut. A flange, f, projects downward into the casing D. The tubing 0 may be inserted or withdrawn through the ring, which covers the annular space between the casing and the tubing, and prevents the escape of oil during the operation.
I claim The hinged segmental flanged ring A B, constructed and operating as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES CONLAN.
Witnesses J. S. Frsnnn, JAMEs ONEIL.
