Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST KOHLER AND FENTON B. TURCK, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN; SAID TUROK ASSIGNOR TO SAID KOHLER.
IMPROVEMENT IN STATION-INDICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198, 395, dated December 18, 1877; application filed March 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ERNST KoHLER and FENTON B. TUROK, both of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Station-Indicators for Railroad-Oars or Horse- Oars; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a representation of a perspective View of our invention; Fig. 2, a detached view of one of the rollers, broken away at one end to show the drum. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the drum.
This invention relates to that class of devices which enable the driver or conduetorof a horse-car or railroad-car to communicate to the passengers the next street or station, by turning a crank and thereby operating the apparatus, and bringing in view, upon a tape or ribbon, the name of the, next street or station; and the object of the invention is to improve the construction of the indicator, in making it simple and readily operated, and at the same time capable of being easily reversed.
The invention therefore consists in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the lower roller, having secured to its shaft a worm-wheel, a, said roller being operated by a worm-screw, B, upon a shaft, 12, the same passing through the wall of the car, and carries on its outer end a crank-handle, c.
The upper roller 0 is journaled in suitable boxes d, and contains within it a drum, D, held in position upon a short shaft, 6, by apin,
f. The drum D is divided into two compartments, in each of which is a spring, h 6. These springs are so arranged that when one is uncoiling, by the rotation of the roller 0 in one direction, the other spring is being coiled, ready to act with the roller when the motion thereof is reversed. The purpose of these springs is to keep the tape or ribbon E stretched, and also to wind the same off of the lower roller A.
A hammer, F, suitably pivoted to a plate, j, is operated by a pin, k, upon the shaft 1), so that a signal may be given at every complete revolution of said shaft. The plate j, to which the several parts are connected, is secured to the outside wall of the car, (represented at w.)
The device is covered by a plate, G, to protect the several parts from dust, and. has an opening, l, provided with a glass window, through which the passenger can read the name of the street or station.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a station-indicator, the roller A, having worm-wheel a, and operated by the wormscrew B, in combination with the roller 0, having placed therein two springs, h i, and the tape or ribbon E, the whole arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The roller 0, having springs h i, tape or ribbon E, and roller A, with its operating mechanism, in combination with the hammer F, operated by the pin it upon the shaft b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
