Definitions

  • My invention relates to elevators and more particularly to electrically operated elevators controlled by a single automatic push-button system of circuits and apparatus.
  • One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved system of circuits and apparatus whereby the car either in ascending or descending can be intercepted by actuation of any hall but'tons at any landings toward which the car is moving, said interception being effective by actuation of each of such hall-buttons only once, regardless of the number actuated for the purpose.
  • Another object of the invention is to embody in conjunction with a dual system of control comprising a single automatic push-button systern of circuits and a car switch system of control each operating independently to control the car, a novel system of circuits whereby the car either in ascending or descending can be intercepted by actuation of any hall-buttons at any landing toward which the car is moving whether the car is under control of the push-button system or the car switch.
  • Another object of the invention is to arrange and coordinate the electrical system of control embodying the feature of intercepting the car, so that for any one direction of car travel, the hall or car push-buttons corresponding to the landings which the car has passed are rendered inoperative to control the car, but the hall-buttons or car buttons corresponding to the landings toward which the car is moving remain operative to intercept and dispatch the car.
  • a still further object of the invention is to provide in conjunction with a single automatic push-button control system for intercepting the car, a novel system of circuits having a mode of operation whereby the car will reach the farthest point to which it is dispatched before service operation in a reverse direction can be eifected and when said farthest point is reached the car buttons are then given preference to dispatch the car in either direction, all the push buttons at this time being rendered inoperative so long as the car gate remains in open position.
  • Fig. 1 illustrates in a diagrammatic manner, a system of electrical control for elevators whereby the car can be controlled independently by either a single automatic push-button system of circuits or by the car switch, with circuits arranged so that in either case the car can be intercepted by the hall push-buttons at any landing or landings toward which it is moving; and
  • Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate in a diagrammatic. manner, a single automatic push-button system of electrical control having the intercepting feature and embodying automatic floor-stopping mechanism of a novel and modified construction.
  • the elements comprise an elevator car C adapted for operation through any of the well known systems of roping or gearing by a hoisting motor M, illustrated herein as shunt wound, the system having a usual electromechanical brake B.
  • Electro-magnetic reversing switches R and R control the descending and ascending directions of car travel respectively and a pair of direction relay switches A and A control circuits for reversing switch windings l and 2 respectively.
  • the present system is adapted for dual control and for this purpose there is provided a manually operable car switch S, car push-buttons 3, 4, 5 and 6, hall-buttons 7, 8, 9 and 10, the present system serving four floors, there being one button in both the car and in the hall for each landing.
  • a knife switch 11 in the car remains in closed position as illustrated and is thrown to an open position when the car is to be under control of the car switch.
  • Floor relay switches are designated 14, 15, 16 and 17, and the floor relay magnets are designated 18.
  • Each one of the floor relay switches such as correspond to the intermediate landings are provided with two pair of auxiliary back contacts 19 and 20, and two pair of top contacts 21 and 22, but the switches corresponding to top and bottom landings have only one pair of back-contacts and two pair of top contacts.
  • Automatically operable floor stopping switch mechanism may be of any well known type, one of which is geared to a moving part of the hoisting apparatus, such as for example the drum shaft, and another type comprising independent switches fixed in the elevator hatchway at each floor landing, and actuated by a cam on the car, the latter type being illustrated herein and being designated 23, 24, 25 and 26.
  • Automatically operable up and down leveling switches are designated 27 and 28 respectively, these switches being adapted to coact with their respective hatchway leveling cams 29 and 30 at each landing.
  • the circuit closed by pressing button 6 may be traced as iollows, frcm plus wire 160 through button 6 to wire 46, through relay winding 18 to wire 47 through floor stopping switch 26 to the wire 48 which is common to all of the up stopping switch contacts, through back contacts 44 to wire 49, through relay winding 45 and thence to the minus line by way of wire 50.
  • the 4th floor relay winding 18 now being energized actuates its switch arm to close top contacts 21 and 22 and open back contacts 19.
  • the top contacts 21 of the4th floor relay 17 close a self -holding circuit for the relay winding 18 which circuit may be traced from the plus wire 170 to wire 51, contacts 52 controlled by the switch 43, wire 53, which is a common feed wire for the hall push-buttons, wire 54, floor relay contacts 21, wire 55 to a junction 56 with the wire 46, thence through relay winding 18 etc. to the minus line in a manner heretofore traced.
  • the reversing switch windings 1 and 2 are not included in either the push button or the self-holding circuit for the relay winding 18.
  • the contacts 22 of relay 17 and also the contacts 57 of the up direction relay now close a circuit for the winding 2 of the up reversing switch R, that is, providing all the hatchway doors and also the car gate are closed, and said reversing switch will now close to direct current to the hoisting motor and brake winding and in this manner effect operation of the car in an ascending direction.
  • the circuit for the winding 2 of the reversing switch R may be traced as follows: from plus wire 170 through hatchway door and car gate contacts 38, 39 to wire 58, switch 42 wire 63 including the leveling winding 32, contacts 22 of floor relay 17, wire 64 extending through each set of back contacts 20 in series associated with each floor relay designated 16, 15 and 14 and including contacts 95, wire 65, thence through the up reversing switch winding 2 to wire 66, blade 67 of knife switch 11, wire 68, thence through contacts 57 to the minus line.
  • the fixed contact 20 is spring-pressed so as to follow up its coacting contact on the relay switch arm until the top contacts 22 are closed, and the fixed top contact of the set 22 is also spring-pressed to yield by movement of the switch arm to open circuit contacts 20 after the contacts 22 are closed.
  • the fixed contacts 19 and 21 of each relay are constructed to have a mode of operation as just described in connection with the contacts 20 and 22.
  • the circuit as established by pressing the 3rd floor hallbutton to intercept the car is as follows: from plus wire 170 to wire 51, contacts 52, wire 53, through button 9, wires '73 and '74, through relay winding 18 of the 3rd floor relay 16, wire 75, through floor stopping switch 25 to the common wire 48 and so on through the up" direction relay winding and to the minus line as heretofore traced.
  • the top contacts 21 of the floor relay 16 now close a self -h0lding circuit for the relay winding 18 which extends from the common feed wire 53, wire 76, top-contacts 21 and wire '7"!
  • the 3rd floor relay When the 3rd floor relay is de-energized to effect a car stop, it opens at the contacts 22 the feed circuit for the up reversing switch winding and in order to break said circuit at these contacts before the back contacts 20 are closed, which sequence of operation is necessary in order to prevent a continuity of the circuit for the up reversing switch winding by reason of the 4th floor relay now being closed, the fixed contact 22 is provided with a dash-pot D to retard its return movement while at the same time the floor relay switch arm imparts a relatively quick movement to the contact 22 carried thereby.
  • the initial feed-circuit for the reversing switch winding 2 includes the hatchway door contacts 38, the car-gate contact 39, and the contacts controlled by switch 42.
  • the reversing switch closes, it closes contacts 80 and by so doing closes a circuit including the winding 81 of switch 42, wire 83, contacts 80, wires 84, 85 and at 86 forms a junction with the feed wire 63.
  • a self -holding circuit for the winding 81 branches at a junction 87, then by wire 88, top contacts 89 of switch 42, thence through a relatively high resistance to the minus line.
  • the winding 81 now being energized opens the lower contacts of switch 42, opening at that point the original reversing switch winding feed circuit and as will be noted, when the reversing switch opens to open contacts 80, the circuit for the winding 81 will still be maintained by way of wire 88 and contacts 89, this circuit including the car gate and hatchway door contacts. Thus it will be seen that when the 3rd floor relay 16 opens to open the up reversing switch winding circuit, said winding cannot be again energized until the car door or hatchway door is opened and again closed.
  • the opening of the floor relay switch opens the circuit for both the relay winding 18 and the up direction relay winding 45.
  • the car When the car is not under dispatch, which condition corresponds to all the floor relays and also the up and down direction relays being in open position, the car if at an intermediate landing with all hatchway doors and the car gate closed, can be dispatched by the hall pushbuttons to travel in either direction.
  • opening the hatchway door and car gate gives preference to the car buttons to dispatch the car in either direction, and renders the hall buttons inoperative to set or, in other words, eflect energization of any floor relay until the car gate is closed.
  • This feature of the invention is accomplished by providing a car gate contact 40 to be closed by the opening of the car gate, and under the above assumed condition, that is, with both direction relays in open position with their back-contacts 82 closed, the latter together with the closed gate contact 40 now close a circuit including the winding 689 of the switch 43 whose normally closed contacts 52 are included in the hall push-button feed circuit. Winding 689 now being energized effects the opening of the contacts 52, thereby opening the feed wire 53 for the hall push-buttons and in this manner render them inoperative to set any of the floor relays until the car gate is again closed.
  • this hall push-button feed circuit when the car is and is not under dispatch is to be distinguished here, for it is to be particularly noted that when the car is under dispatch, which condition corresponds to one or more of the floor relays being closed and one or the other of the direction relays being in closed or actuated position; the hall-buttons remain operative to set their respective floor relays to intercept the car at the landings toward which it is moving, regardless of whether the car is stopped or the gates opened, and until the car has reached its farthest point of dispatch and the hatchway door and car gate thereat opened and again closed.
  • the top contacts 22 of the floor relays are connected by parallel wires shunting from the common feed wire 63, and the circuits for the reversing switch windings after passing through any one of the intermediate floor relay contacts 22, includes one or the other series of back-contacts 19 or 20 (depending on the direction of car travel) of all the floor relays corresponding to the floor or floors which the car has passed.
  • the leveling switch controlling mechanism having a mode of operation as follows: the actuating winding 32 for the cam 33 is contained in the feed circuit 63 and is therefore energized and de-energized simultaneously with the reversing switch windings excepting during the operation thereof for leveling. Hence when an automatic fioor stopping switch functions to discontinue the hoisting operation, this winding 32 is de-energized and cannot be energized again until a hatchway and car door is opened and again closed.
  • the leveling switch mechanism is then rendered operable to effect the automatic leveling operation aseifected by downward movement of the cam 33to rock the levers 31 and so rock both of the leveling switches bodily to bring their leveling rollers 36 into engagement with one or the other of the leveling cams 29 or 30. Assume now the car is ascending in the cam zone toward the 2nd landing and the roller 36 engages the up cam 29.
  • the feed circuit for the reversing switch windings is independent of the push-button feed circuit 63 and the circuit for the up reversing switch winding as controlled by the up leveling switch may be traced as follows: from the plus wire 180, contacts 92, wire 181, through the up reversing switch winding 2, wires 66 and 182, and thence through the leveling switch contacts 91 to the minus line.
  • the leveling switch mechanism controls feedcircuits for the reversing switch windings which are independent of the push-button system of circuits, it being desirable when the leveling switch mechanism is rendered operable to disconnect the push-button system of circuits such as control the reversing switch windings from the leveling switch feed-circuits and to accomplish this result the push-button controlled feed-circuits for the up and down reversing switch windings are opened at the contacts 94 and 95 controlled by an electro-magnet 96 whose circuit 97 is opened by normally closed contacts 98 when either leveling switch engages its respective leveling cam 29 or 30.
  • the knife switch 11 in the car is first thrown to open position to disassociate the control of the reversing switch windings from the up and down direction relays A and A and by shunting these circuits around the knife switch 11 as eifected by wires 101 and 102 and connected them to the car switch contacts 99 and 100, saidreversing switch circuits are thereby rendered operable to be opened and closed at will by opera- Lil car buttons 6 or 3 should first be pressed to establish a feed for the reversing switch winding through one of the direction relay switches A or A corresponding to the direction of car travel desired.
  • car button 6 is operated, the 4th floor relay switch 17 and up relay switch A will operate and while the feed circuit for the reversing switch winding 2 is closed at the 4th floor relay contacts 22, it is, however,
  • the circuit for the winding of the up reversing switch B may be traced as follows: from the plus wire 1'70, door and car gate contacts 38 and 39 to wire 58, switch 42, wire 63, contacts 22 of contacts 20 in series of each floor relay 16, and '14, the circuit including the contacts 95, wire 61', through the winding 2 of the reversing switch R, wire 66 to junction 104, wire 102, thence by way of the car switch contacts to the minus line.
  • this circuit for the reversing switch winding included the series of floor relay contacts 22, hence it will be seen that the car can be intercepted at any of the landings toward which it is moving even though the car switch is held in on position, by pressing a button at any of said landings to effect operation of the floor relays and in this way the control of the feed circuit for the reversing switch winding is transferred to the various relays corresponding to the intercepting hallbuttons and the car will stop in succession at the landings corresponding to the hall-buttons pressed.
  • leveling switch mechanism becomes operative automatically to level the car platform subsequently to the discontinuation of the hoisting operation whether effected by centering the car switch or by the automatic floor stopping switches which are caused to function if the car is intercepted by operation of a hall-button or buttons.
  • the protective features are the same as for push-button control as to those features which prevent operation of the car until all the hatchway doors and the car gate are closed, and which prevent operation of the car subsequently to a landing stop, unless and until a hatchway door and car gate is first opened and again closed.
  • automatically operable floor stopping switch mechanism is of a modified form consisting of a tape forming two current carrying sections 150 and 151 which through coacting contact clips 152 at each floor landing, render the push-button circuits inoperative at landings which the car has passed by, while the push-buttons corresponding to landings toward which the car is moving, remain operative to intercept and dispatch the car.
  • each of the two tape sections is attached to a contact such as 153, 153, the two ends having a gap formed therehetween so that with a car at any one landing the contact clip at such landing will assume a neutral position with respect to the two current carrying sections.
  • the two sections are connected to move with the car by securing the contacts 153, 153 thereto at 154 and extend from said contacts in opposite directions around guide sheaves 155 at the top and bottom of the hatchway, their other ends being connected together at a point 156 by some suitable material which insulates the sections from each other, the two sections being movable by the car in a manner as though endless.
  • each floor relay as designated iii, includes its respective contact clips 152.
  • the upper and lower sections 151 and 150 of the tape sections provide a common feed for the up and down direction relay windings 45 and 79 respectively, the circuit for the winding 45 extending from the contact 153', wire 157, back contacts a4, on down relay A, wire 158, thence through winding 45 to the minus line.
  • the circuit for the winding 79 extends from the contact 153, wire 159, back-contacts 78, wire 160, thence through winding '79 to the minus line.
  • the circuits for the operating windings of the reversing switch mechanism are controlled jointly and directly by both the floor stop switches and the floor relay switches, whereas in Fig. 1, said circuits are controlled directly by only the floor relays and indirectly by the floor stop switches by the provision of three sets of contactors for each relay for each intermediate landing, and dashpots are employed to effect control of the circuits in proper order or sequence.
  • dashpots are employed to effect control of the circuits in proper order or sequence.
  • each is provided with relatively long and short segmental contactors 161 and 162 respectively, controlling respectively the circuits for the floor relay windings and the windings of the reversing switches.
  • the floor relay switches corresponding to landings toward which the car is moving remain set to intercept the car thereat by momentarily pressing the buttons only once forany'one direction of car travel, and one or the other of the direction relays remains closed so that car reversal cannot ordinarily be eirected before the car reaches any landing which corresponds to the farthest point to which it is dispatched by either the car or hall-buttons, regardless of the number of intermediate stops.
  • the up and down feed wires 163 and 164 after passing through auxiliary contacts 165, 166 respectively controlled by the direction relays A, A include their up and down floor relay back contactors 20 and 19 in series, which contactors (together with protective contactors not shown) when all closed complete the circuits for their respective windings as determined by whichever direction relay is closed, and by providing wires 167 in shunt to said series connection, and controlling the same by the floor stop switch segments 162 together with their coacting fixed contactors.
  • Car stops will thereby be effected successively at all landings toward which the car is moving whose corresponding floor relay switches are open as elrected by push button-control so that each floor relay by opening thereby renders the stop operation subject to the control of its corresponding floor stop switch which by actuating its segment will thereby open the energizing circuit of whichever reversing switch winding is energized.
  • each floor stop switch will disengage its fixed contactor to de-energize the reversing switch winding before the longer segment 161 open-circuits the floor relay winding to permit its back-contactors to close, and in this manner a time period is introduced to permit the reversing switch to open and render the protective devices effective before the floor relay back-oontacts close, so that the circuit for the reversing switch winding cannot again be closed until the hatchway and car doors are opened and again closed.

65 Claims.
My invention relates to elevators and more particularly to electrically operated elevators controlled by a single automatic push-button system of circuits and apparatus.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved system of circuits and apparatus whereby the car either in ascending or descending can be intercepted by actuation of any hall but'tons at any landings toward which the car is moving, said interception being effective by actuation of each of such hall-buttons only once, regardless of the number actuated for the purpose.
Another object of the invention is to embody in conjunction with a dual system of control comprising a single automatic push-button systern of circuits and a car switch system of control each operating independently to control the car, a novel system of circuits whereby the car either in ascending or descending can be intercepted by actuation of any hall-buttons at any landing toward which the car is moving whether the car is under control of the push-button system or the car switch.
Another object of the invention is to arrange and coordinate the electrical system of control embodying the feature of intercepting the car, so that for any one direction of car travel, the hall or car push-buttons corresponding to the landings which the car has passed are rendered inoperative to control the car, but the hall-buttons or car buttons corresponding to the landings toward which the car is moving remain operative to intercept and dispatch the car.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in conjunction with a single automatic push-button control system for intercepting the car, a novel system of circuits having a mode of operation whereby the car will reach the farthest point to which it is dispatched before service operation in a reverse direction can be eifected and when said farthest point is reached the car buttons are then given preference to dispatch the car in either direction, all the push buttons at this time being rendered inoperative so long as the car gate remains in open position.
Other objects will appear more fully hereinafter, the novel combinations of elements and arrangements of parts being fully pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 illustrates in a diagrammatic manner, a system of electrical control for elevators whereby the car can be controlled independently by either a single automatic push-button system of circuits or by the car switch, with circuits arranged so that in either case the car can be intercepted by the hall push-buttons at any landing or landings toward which it is moving; and
Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate in a diagrammatic. manner, a single automatic push-button system of electrical control having the intercepting feature and embodying automatic floor-stopping mechanism of a novel and modified construction.
Referring now to Fig. l, the elements comprise an elevator car C adapted for operation through any of the well known systems of roping or gearing by a hoisting motor M, illustrated herein as shunt wound, the system having a usual electromechanical brake B. Electro-magnetic reversing switches R and R control the descending and ascending directions of car travel respectively and a pair of direction relay switches A and A control circuits for reversing switch windings l and 2 respectively. The present system is adapted for dual control and for this purpose there is provided a manually operable car switch S, car push-buttons 3, 4, 5 and 6, hall- buttons 7, 8, 9 and 10, the present system serving four floors, there being one button in both the car and in the hall for each landing. When the car is under control of the push-button system a knife switch 11 in the car remains in closed position as illustrated and is thrown to an open position when the car is to be under control of the car switch. Floor relay switches are designated 14, 15, 16 and 17, and the floor relay magnets are designated 18. Each one of the floor relay switches such as correspond to the intermediate landings are provided with two pair of auxiliary back contacts 19 and 20, and two pair of top contacts 21 and 22, but the switches corresponding to top and bottom landings have only one pair of back-contacts and two pair of top contacts. Automatically operable floor stopping switch mechanism may be of any well known type, one of which is geared to a moving part of the hoisting apparatus, such as for example the drum shaft, and another type comprising independent switches fixed in the elevator hatchway at each floor landing, and actuated by a cam on the car, the latter type being illustrated herein and being designated 23, 24, 25 and 26. Automatically operable up and down leveling switches are designated 27 and 28 respectively, these switches being adapted to coact with their respective hatchway leveling cams 29 and 30 at each landing. These switches are rocked bodily by their respective bell-crank levers 31 when a winding 32 is energized to withdraw a doublefaced cam 33 from rollers 34 to permit a spring 35 to effect rocking movement of the levers 31 and thereby rock the leveling switch rollers 36 to an inoperative position so as not to strike the leveling cams at the floors which the car passes by. When the winding 32 is de-energized, a spring 37 urges the cam 33 downwardly and by so doing rocks the leveling switches bodily so that their rollers will be in a position to coact with their respective cams. By such coaction said leveling switches are actuated to closed position in the event of the car overrunning or under-running a desired landing or during loading and unloading. Hatchway door contacts are designated 38 and the elevator car gate is provided with two sets of contacts 39 and 40, the former being closed with the gate in closed position and the latter being closed with the gate in open position. Electro- responsive switches 42 and 43 function as protective devices.
Operation of the parts through a complete cycle as effected by push-button control will now be presented. With the elements in position as illustrated in Fig. 1, the car is at rest at the second floor landing, with the car gate and hatchway door open and the relay switches 16 and 17 being closed indicates that the car is dispatched to both the 3rd and 4th landings. Let it be assumed that dispatch of the car to the 4th floor is effected by actuating the car-button 6 corresponding to said floor. The button 6 need be pressed only momentarily and closes a circuit for the relay winding 18, which circuit includes the stopping switch 26, back contacts 44 on the down relay A and a winding 45 which is now energized to close the up relay switch A. The circuit closed by pressing button 6 may be traced as iollows, frcm plus wire 160 through button 6 to wire 46, through relay winding 18 to wire 47 through floor stopping switch 26 to the wire 48 which is common to all of the up stopping switch contacts, through back contacts 44 to wire 49, through relay winding 45 and thence to the minus line by way of wire 50. The 4th floor relay winding 18 now being energized actuates its switch arm to close top contacts 21 and 22 and open back contacts 19. The top contacts 21 of the4th floor relay 17 close a self -holding circuit for the relay winding 18 which circuit may be traced from the plus wire 170 to wire 51, contacts 52 controlled by the switch 43, wire 53, which is a common feed wire for the hall push-buttons, wire 54, floor relay contacts 21, wire 55 to a junction 56 with the wire 46, thence through relay winding 18 etc. to the minus line in a manner heretofore traced.
It will thus far be noted that actuation of the push-button efiects directly only the operation of the 4th floor relay switch 17 and the up direction relay A, and the self-holding circuit for the floorrelay winding 13 is controlled by the floor stopping switch 26;
It will be particularly noted that the reversing switch windings 1 and 2 are not included in either the push button or the self-holding circuit for the relay winding 18. However, the contacts 22 of relay 17 and also the contacts 57 of the up direction relay now close a circuit for the winding 2 of the up reversing switch R, that is, providing all the hatchway doors and also the car gate are closed, and said reversing switch will now close to direct current to the hoisting motor and brake winding and in this manner effect operation of the car in an ascending direction. The circuit for the winding 2 of the reversing switch R may be traced as follows: from plus wire 170 through hatchway door and car gate contacts 38, 39 to wire 58, switch 42 wire 63 including the leveling winding 32, contacts 22 of floor relay 17, wire 64 extending through each set of back contacts 20 in series associated with each floor relay designated 16, 15 and 14 and including contacts 95, wire 65, thence through the up reversing switch winding 2 to wire 66, blade 67 of knife switch 11, wire 68, thence through contacts 57 to the minus line.
7 The car will now ascend from the 2nd to the 4th floor, that is, still assuming that the 3rd floor relay switch 16 is open, and when the car is within a short distance of the 4th floor landing, the floor stopping switch 26 is automatically opened by movement of the car, thereby opening the self-holding circuit for the winding 18 of the floor relay l7 and with all of the other floor relay switches now in open position; the up direction relay winding 45 will also be de-energized and both the floor relay switch 17 and the .up direction relay A" will now open their top contacts and close their back contacts.
In the present instance the circuit for the up reversing switch winding 2 is now opened at the 4th floor relay contacts 22, also at the up relay contacts 57, and the reversing switch R will now open to discontinue the hoisting operation and efiect application of the mechanical brake.
Coming now to the particular feature of the invention which involves the matter of intercepting the car at one or more landings toward which the car is moving, let it be assumed again that the car is at the 2nd floor landing as shown and the 4th floor car-button 6 is pressed to dispatch the car to the 4th floor, in which case the floor relay 17 is thereby closed and also the up direction relay A. With all the hatchway doors and also the car door closed, the car will move in an ascending direction as heretofore pointed out. However, if either the hall-button 9 or car button 5, which buttons correspond to the 3rd floor landing, is pressed before the car reaches said landing, the ascending car is thereby intercepted and will automatically stop at said landing, said interception being due to the operation of the 3rd floor relay 16 to close its top contacts and open its bottom contacts. Now, as will be remembered, the feed circuit for the up reversing switch winding 2 as controlled by the 4th floor relay switch contacts 22, included the back-contacts 20 of the 3rd floor relay and hence opening these back-contacts transfers the control of the up reversing switch winding feed-circuit 63 to the contacts 22 of the 3rd floor relay 16, said circuit being traced as before to the wire 63 and shunting therefrom at wire 69, contacts 22 of relay 16, wires 70 and 71, and forming a junction at 72 with the wire 64, through the back-contacts 20 of the floor relays 15 and 14 to wire 65, through the up reversing switch winding 2 and so on to the minus line in the manner as heretofore traced. In order to maintain the continuity of the circuit for the up reversing switch winding when its feed istransferred from the 4th to the 3rd floor relay contacts 22, the fixed contact 20 is spring-pressed so as to follow up its coacting contact on the relay switch arm until the top contacts 22 are closed, and the fixed top contact of the set 22 is also spring-pressed to yield by movement of the switch arm to open circuit contacts 20 after the contacts 22 are closed. The fixed contacts 19 and 21 of each relay are constructed to have a mode of operation as just described in connection with the contacts 20 and 22.
Continuing now, with the operation, the circuit as established by pressing the 3rd floor hallbutton to intercept the car is as follows: from plus wire 170 to wire 51, contacts 52, wire 53, through button 9, wires '73 and '74, through relay winding 18 of the 3rd floor relay 16, wire 75, through floor stopping switch 25 to the common wire 48 and so on through the up" direction relay winding and to the minus line as heretofore traced. The top contacts 21 of the floor relay 16 now close a self -h0lding circuit for the relay winding 18 which extends from the common feed wire 53, wire 76, top-contacts 21 and wire '7"! which forms a junction at 78 with wire '74, the circuit extending from thereon in a manner as just traced. When the car approaches within a short distance of the 3rd fioor landing its movement will effect the automatic actuation of the 3rd floor stopping switch 25 to effect a stop of the car at said landing. Opening the stopping switch 25 opens the self-holding circuit for the 3rd floor relay winding 18 and the relay switch 16 will now open its top contacts 21, 22 and close its bot tom contacts. At this time it will be noted that the circuit for the winding 45 of the up direc tion relay A is maintained closed through the contacts 21 of the 4th floor relay 17, when the 3rd floor relay is tie-energized and until the car reaches the 4th floor landing. In effect then it will be seen that regardless of the number of interceptions of the car for any one direction of travel, it must complete its trip to the farthest point to which it is dispatched before it can be dispached to travel in a reverse direction. This reverse travel is prevented for the reason that back-contacts 5'78 are included in the circuit of the down relay winding 79, hence the down direction relay A cannot operate so long as the up direction relay remains energized.
Another important feature to be pointed out here is that the self-holding circuits for the windings of the floor relays are in parallel and shunting from common feed wire 53, hence all floor relay windings which have been energized for the purpose of intercepting the car are maintained energized by their respective self-holding circuits, each relay being de-energized by actuation of the floor stopping switch corresponding thereto. This in effect means that regardless of the number of buttons which are pressed to intercept the car at landings toward which it is moving, each button need be pressed only once for any one direction of car travel.
When the 3rd floor relay is de-energized to effect a car stop, it opens at the contacts 22 the feed circuit for the up reversing switch winding and in order to break said circuit at these contacts before the back contacts 20 are closed, which sequence of operation is necessary in order to prevent a continuity of the circuit for the up reversing switch winding by reason of the 4th floor relay now being closed, the fixed contact 22 is provided with a dash-pot D to retard its return movement while at the same time the floor relay switch arm imparts a relatively quick movement to the contact 22 carried thereby.
The car is now stopped at the 3rd floor and the hoisting operation is not rendered effective again. regardless of the fact that one or more of the floor relays are closed, it being remembered that the 4th floor relay is at this time closed, unless and until either the car gate or hatchway door is opened and again closed. However, it will be understood that under certain conditions the push-buttons remain operative to set the floor relays during the period of car stop and regardless of the position of the car gate or hatchway doors. In providing this protective feature the initial feed-circuit for the reversing switch winding 2 includes the hatchway door contacts 38, the car-gate contact 39, and the contacts controlled by switch 42. When the reversing switch closes, it closes contacts 80 and by so doing closes a circuit including the winding 81 of switch 42, wire 83, contacts 80, wires 84, 85 and at 86 forms a junction with the feed wire 63. A self -holding circuit for the winding 81 branches at a junction 87, then by wire 88, top contacts 89 of switch 42, thence through a relatively high resistance to the minus line. The winding 81 now being energized opens the lower contacts of switch 42, opening at that point the original reversing switch winding feed circuit and as will be noted, when the reversing switch opens to open contacts 80, the circuit for the winding 81 will still be maintained by way of wire 88 and contacts 89, this circuit including the car gate and hatchway door contacts. Thus it will be seen that when the 3rd floor relay 16 opens to open the up reversing switch winding circuit, said winding cannot be again energized until the car door or hatchway door is opened and again closed. Such dooropening in eiiect de-energizes winding 81 so that the switch 42 will again close and with all the hatchway doors and car gate closed, the original feed circuit which is independent of the reversing switch contacts 80 is restored and with the 4th floor relay now energized to close the reversing switch winding feed contacts 22, the
car will now travel to the 4th floor landing and be automatically stopped thereat and since this landing corresponds to the farthest point to which the car is dispatched, regardless of whether or not such landing is the limit of travel or an intermediate landing, the opening of the floor relay switch opens the circuit for both the relay winding 18 and the up direction relay winding 45.
When the car is not under dispatch, which condition corresponds to all the floor relays and also the up and down direction relays being in open position, the car if at an intermediate landing with all hatchway doors and the car gate closed, can be dispatched by the hall pushbuttons to travel in either direction. On the other hand, when the car is not under dispatch and is at rest at a landing, opening the hatchway door and car gate gives preference to the car buttons to dispatch the car in either direction, and renders the hall buttons inoperative to set or, in other words, eflect energization of any floor relay until the car gate is closed. This feature of the invention is accomplished by providing a car gate contact 40 to be closed by the opening of the car gate, and under the above assumed condition, that is, with both direction relays in open position with their back-contacts 82 closed, the latter together with the closed gate contact 40 now close a circuit including the winding 689 of the switch 43 whose normally closed contacts 52 are included in the hall push-button feed circuit. Winding 689 now being energized effects the opening of the contacts 52, thereby opening the feed wire 53 for the hall push-buttons and in this manner render them inoperative to set any of the floor relays until the car gate is again closed. Thus a person in the car desiring to use the same is assured of not having it stolen from him so that he has complete control of the car to establish travel thereof in the direction desired, and this direction must be established by pressing the desired car button prior to closing the car gate, and with all the hatchway doors closed, closing the car gate initiates the hoisting operation and again renders the hall push-button system operable to intercept the car at landings toward which it is moving.
The condition of this hall push-button feed circuit when the car is and is not under dispatch is to be distinguished here, for it is to be particularly noted that when the car is under dispatch, which condition corresponds to one or more of the floor relays being closed and one or the other of the direction relays being in closed or actuated position; the hall-buttons remain operative to set their respective floor relays to intercept the car at the landings toward which it is moving, regardless of whether the car is stopped or the gates opened, and until the car has reached its farthest point of dispatch and the hatchway door and car gate thereat opened and again closed.
When the car for any one direction of travel is under dispatch, the car or hall push-buttons which correspond to the landings which the car has passed are rendered inoperative since when the up direction relay winding is energized its back-contacts 578 open the down relay winding circuit and likewise when the down direction relay winding 79 is energized its back contacts l i open the up relay winding circuit, and as will be remembered, each one of these circuits for reverse travel is maintained open until the car has reached the farthest point to which it is dispatched and' then the car cannot be started in a reverse direction until a hatchway and car gate has been opened and again closed.
Thus far it will be observed that the top contacts 22 of the floor relays are connected by parallel wires shunting from the common feed wire 63, and the circuits for the reversing switch windings after passing through any one of the intermediate floor relay contacts 22, includes one or the other series of back-contacts 19 or 20 (depending on the direction of car travel) of all the floor relays corresponding to the floor or floors which the car has passed.
Hence it will be seen that with this arrangement of circuits for the reversing switch windings the car will stop in succession at landings toward which it is moving which correspond to the hallbuttons pressed for the purpose of intercepting the car, but without opening the closed direction relay switch, except at the point of ultimate dispatch.
In view of the complete and detailed description of the circuits and mode of operation as already given with respect to ascending direction of car travel, it is thought unnecessary to give a detailed description of the elements for descending direction of car travel other than to mention that the back-contacts 19 of the floor relays 17, 16 and 15 control the circuit of the down reversing switch winding 1 in a manner to eifect interception of the descending car.
If it may be desired to effect leveling of the car platform with landings and to maintain the platform level during loading and unloading, such result can be obtained by adding to the system the leveling switch controlling mechanism having a mode of operation as follows: the actuating winding 32 for the cam 33 is contained in the feed circuit 63 and is therefore energized and de-energized simultaneously with the reversing switch windings excepting during the operation thereof for leveling. Hence when an automatic fioor stopping switch functions to discontinue the hoisting operation, this winding 32 is de-energized and cannot be energized again until a hatchway and car door is opened and again closed. Therefore, when the hoisting operation is discontinued as by operation of the automatic stopping switch, the leveling switch mechanism is then rendered operable to effect the automatic leveling operation aseifected by downward movement of the cam 33to rock the levers 31 and so rock both of the leveling switches bodily to bring their leveling rollers 36 into engagement with one or the other of the leveling cams 29 or 30. Assume now the car is ascending in the cam zone toward the 2nd landing and the roller 36 engages the up cam 29. Such co-action between the cam and roller closes the leveling switch contacts 91 and 92 to close a circuit for the up reversing switch winding 2, thereby effecting operation of the up reversing switch to control the hoisting motor to continue movement of the car toward the landing and when the car is substantially level therewith the roller 36 rides down the incline face of the leveling cam 29 and permits a spring 93 to open the leveling switch to effect stop of the car; In the event of the car now over-running the landing, the roller 36 of the car leveling switch is brought into engagement with the cam 30 and such coaction closes the down leveling switch 28 to eifect operation of the down reversing switch R to reverse the movement of the car and return it to a level with the landing. The feed circuit for the reversing switch windings is independent of the push-button feed circuit 63 and the circuit for the up reversing switch winding as controlled by the up leveling switch may be traced as follows: from the plus wire 180, contacts 92, wire 181, through the up reversing switch winding 2, wires 66 and 182, and thence through the leveling switch contacts 91 to the minus line.
Any tendency of the car to move away from a level with the landing by reason of stretch or contraction of the hoisting cables due to loading or unloading, renders one or the other of the leveling switches operative to return the car to the landing.
The leveling switch mechanism controls feedcircuits for the reversing switch windings which are independent of the push-button system of circuits, it being desirable when the leveling switch mechanism is rendered operable to disconnect the push-button system of circuits such as control the reversing switch windings from the leveling switch feed-circuits and to accomplish this result the push-button controlled feed-circuits for the up and down reversing switch windings are opened at the contacts 94 and 95 controlled by an electro-magnet 96 whose circuit 97 is opened by normally closed contacts 98 when either leveling switch engages its respective leveling cam 29 or 30.
In order now to render the system operable for car switch control, the knife switch 11 in the car is first thrown to open position to disassociate the control of the reversing switch windings from the up and down direction relays A and A and by shunting these circuits around the knife switch 11 as eifected by wires 101 and 102 and connected them to the car switch contacts 99 and 100, saidreversing switch circuits are thereby rendered operable to be opened and closed at will by opera- Lil car buttons 6 or 3 should first be pressed to establish a feed for the reversing switch winding through one of the direction relay switches A or A corresponding to the direction of car travel desired. Say, for example, car button 6 is operated, the 4th floor relay switch 17 and up relay switch A will operate and while the feed circuit for the reversing switch winding 2 is closed at the 4th floor relay contacts 22, it is, however,
opened at the car switch, so that by operation of the car switch segment to engage contacts 100 and 103, said circuit is completed to efiect energization of the up reversing switch winding and in this way control the ascending hoisting operation of the car, and as will be evident, the car can be stopped at any desired landing at the will of the operator by centering the car switch. The circuit for the winding of the up reversing switch B may be traced as follows: from the plus wire 1'70, door and car gate contacts 38 and 39 to wire 58, switch 42, wire 63, contacts 22 of contacts 20 in series of each floor relay 16, and '14, the circuit including the contacts 95, wire 61', through the winding 2 of the reversing switch R, wire 66 to junction 104, wire 102, thence by way of the car switch contacts to the minus line. It will be observed now that this circuit for the reversing switch winding included the series of floor relay contacts 22, hence it will be seen that the car can be intercepted at any of the landings toward which it is moving even though the car switch is held in on position, by pressing a button at any of said landings to effect operation of the floor relays and in this way the control of the feed circuit for the reversing switch winding is transferred to the various relays corresponding to the intercepting hallbuttons and the car will stop in succession at the landings corresponding to the hall-buttons pressed. It will be obvious that the leveling switch mechanism becomes operative automatically to level the car platform subsequently to the discontinuation of the hoisting operation whether effected by centering the car switch or by the automatic floor stopping switches which are caused to function if the car is intercepted by operation of a hall-button or buttons.
With car switch control the protective features are the same as for push-button control as to those features which prevent operation of the car until all the hatchway doors and the car gate are closed, and which prevent operation of the car subsequently to a landing stop, unless and until a hatchway door and car gate is first opened and again closed.
Referring now to Fig. 2, the push-button system of circuits is substantially identical with the system illustrated in Fig. 1. However, in Fig. ,2, automatically operable floor stopping switch mechanism is of a modified form consisting of a tape forming two current carrying sections 150 and 151 which through coacting contact clips 152 at each floor landing, render the push-button circuits inoperative at landings which the car has passed by, while the push-buttons corresponding to landings toward which the car is moving, remain operative to intercept and dispatch the car. One of the ends of each of the two tape sections is attached to a contact such as 153, 153, the two ends having a gap formed therehetween so that with a car at any one landing the contact clip at such landing will assume a neutral position with respect to the two current carrying sections. The two sections are connected to move with the car by securing the contacts 153, 153 thereto at 154 and extend from said contacts in opposite directions around guide sheaves 155 at the top and bottom of the hatchway, their other ends being connected together at a point 156 by some suitable material which insulates the sections from each other, the two sections being movable by the car in a manner as though endless.
The circuit for each floor relay as designated iii, includes its respective contact clips 152.
The upper and lower sections 151 and 150 of the tape sections provide a common feed for the up and down direction relay windings 45 and 79 respectively, the circuit for the winding 45 extending from the contact 153', wire 157, back contacts a4, on down relay A, wire 158, thence through winding 45 to the minus line. The circuit for the winding 79 extends from the contact 153, wire 159, back-contacts 78, wire 160, thence through winding '79 to the minus line.
With the car ascending from the 1st floor, it will be evident that the floor contacts 152 at all the landings toward which the car is moving are in electrical contact with the upper section 151 of the tape and in this way all the push-buttons at said landings are rendered operable to dispatch the car and these circuits are the same as in Fig. 1 to permit intercepting of the car at any landings toward which it is moving. As the car in ascending reaches each landing, the movement of the tape sections by the car causes the upper or live section to disengage the clips at such landing, and in this way any floor relay winding corresponding to the button pressed to intercept is de-energized, but the upper section of the tape remains alive to maintain the circuit for the up direction relay until the car has reached the farthest point to which it is dispatched whereat the floor relay contacts provide the feed for said tape. The ascending car as it moves away from each intermediate landing, brings the lower tape section 150 into engagement with the clip 152 at such landings, and this section remains dead which in effect renders the push-buttons inoperative at the floors which the car has passed, and such push-buttons are inoperative at this time because with the car ascending the circuit for the down direction relay winding is open and the up relay back-contacts 78.
Thus from the description herein given it will be seen that these tape sections and coacting elements function to control the circuits of the push-button system in identically the same manner as do the cam operated floor stopping switches in the hatchway as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 3, the circuits for the operating windings of the reversing switch mechanism are controlled jointly and directly by both the floor stop switches and the floor relay switches, whereas in Fig. 1, said circuits are controlled directly by only the floor relays and indirectly by the floor stop switches by the provision of three sets of contactors for each relay for each intermediate landing, and dashpots are employed to effect control of the circuits in proper order or sequence. By such joint control, the control of the circuits in proper order or sequence is obtained without the use of dash-pots to effect that same results as in Fig. 1. In adapting the floor stop switches for such use,
-each is provided with relatively long and short segmental contactors 161 and 162 respectively, controlling respectively the circuits for the floor relay windings and the windings of the reversing switches.
In operation, the floor relay switches corresponding to landings toward which the car is moving remain set to intercept the car thereat by momentarily pressing the buttons only once forany'one direction of car travel, and one or the other of the direction relays remains closed so that car reversal cannot ordinarily be eirected before the car reaches any landing which corresponds to the farthest point to which it is dispatched by either the car or hall-buttons, regardless of the number of intermediate stops.
Now as to the mode of operation of the floor relay switches to control the circuits for the reversing switch windings jointly with the floor stop switches, the up and down feed wires 163 and 164 after passing through auxiliary contacts 165, 166 respectively controlled by the direction relays A, A include their up and down floor relay back contactors 20 and 19 in series, which contactors (together with protective contactors not shown) when all closed complete the circuits for their respective windings as determined by whichever direction relay is closed, and by providing wires 167 in shunt to said series connection, and controlling the same by the floor stop switch segments 162 together with their coacting fixed contactors. Car stops will thereby be effected successively at all landings toward which the car is moving whose corresponding floor relay switches are open as elrected by push button-control so that each floor relay by opening thereby renders the stop operation subject to the control of its corresponding floor stop switch which by actuating its segment will thereby open the energizing circuit of whichever reversing switch winding is energized. The shorter segment 162 of each floor stop switch will disengage its fixed contactor to de-energize the reversing switch winding before the longer segment 161 open-circuits the floor relay winding to permit its back-contactors to close, and in this manner a time period is introduced to permit the reversing switch to open and render the protective devices effective before the floor relay back-oontacts close, so that the circuit for the reversing switch winding cannot again be closed until the hatchway and car doors are opened and again closed.
It will be understood, of course, that in substituting this modified arrangement for that illustrated in Fig. 1, the reversing switch winding circuits will include the car and hatchway door contacts and other protective devices as il-' lustrated in 'Fig. 1, but not illustrated in Fig. 3, since their function has already been described in detail in connection with said Fig. 1, and in Fig. 3 only suchcircuits have been illustrated as are necessary for a clear understanding thereof.
