Description

De.4,`1934. HSWANSVON v y 1,982,839
PACK SADDLE Filed June 7, 1952 gwwmtoz Herman Swanson MfS/*femm Patented Dec. 4, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to pack saddles and certain objects of the invention are to provide a pack saddle comprising a pair of side boards having forward and rear transverse bows pivotally connected to the side boards whereby they are flexibly retained in forwardly convergent spaced apart relation. Further objects are to provide a pair of side boards for the pack saddle having outwardly curved forward end portions and having rear end portions that are convex on their undersides. Still further objects are to provide a pack saddle that is pivotally connected, form iitting, comfortable, which will not slip, and which is simple and inexpensive in construction. l5
which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a View in perspective of the pack saddle;
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same;
Fig. 3 is a view in transverse vertical section taken on a broken line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view in vertical section taken on a broken line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts7 the numerals 5 and 6 respectively designate a pair of side boards that are convex in cross section on their under sides at the rear, as at 7, and whose forward ends are curved outwardly as at 8. Said boards are preferably made of spruce wood although any other desirable material may be used. The convex and curved end portions adapt said boards to fit a pack animals back.
The side boards 5 and 6 are held in spaced apart and forwardly converging relation by a forward bow 9 and a rear bow 10. The forward With the above and other objects in view.
bow is shorter than the rear bow and the ends of said bows are pivotally connected by a bolt or other pivot 11 passing through said ends and through upturned lugs 12 formed on plates 13 that are bolted or otherwise secured to the side boards as most clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
The pack saddle is placed on blankets which cover the animals back and is secured by straps or the like in the usual manner. The animals spine projects upwardly between the side boards into the bows and the outwardly curved forward end portions 8 provide space for the shoulders at the Withers of the animal while the convex rear end portions 7 fit against the back of the 70 animal forward of the hips. This pivotally connected and iiexible form fitting pack saddle, when properly secured on a pack animals back, will not slip laterally or longitudinally and provides a comfortable means for the animal in carrying heavy loads which may be slung between the bows or secured thereto.
Having thus described my invention, it being understood that minor changes may be resorted to in its construction and arrangement without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
A pack saddle comprising a pair of side boards,
a pair of transverse bows one of which is shorter 95 than the other, the shorter bow having yits ends pivotally connected to the forward end portions of the side boards, the longer bow having its ends pivotally connected to the rear end portions of the side boards whereby said boards are flexibly retained in forwardly convergent spaced apart relation, the forward endporti-ons of the side boards curved outwardly, and the rear end portions only of said side boards being convex in cross section on their undersides.
