Application April 21, 1934, Serial No. 721,666 7 Claims. (Cl. 215-7)" This invention relates to devices for controlling the fluid in liquid containers, and has particular reference to closures.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the character described,
wherein a closure and a sealing member, breakably interconnected, are individually connected to a container so that neither can be removed without breaking the closure, the closure, or inner member being made of a sheet metal and having means including an integral projecting portion for affording the interconnection between the members. i
Another object of the invention is to furnish a device of the type mentioned wherein the closure and sealing members have an improved interconnecting arrangement including openings in the members at or along which an interconnecting element extends, and means for closing one of said openings.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the class alluded to, wherein a separate attachment or molding in of an interconnecting element is avoided.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the'nature set forth wherein the container neck is utilized as a support in making the interconnection between the closure and sealing members, and without danger of breakage of the closure at a frangible portion.
' A further object is to provide a device having few and simple parts and which is inexpensive to manufacture, quick to assemble, neat in appearance, durable, reliable and 'eflicient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds.
With the aforesaid objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawing, wherein like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the several views.

The advantages of the invention ashere outlined are best realized when all of its features and instrumentalities are combined in one and the same structure, but, useful-devices may be produced embodying less than the whole. I
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, that the same may be incorporated in several different construc- Q tions. The'accompanying drawing, thereforeyis submitted merely as showing the preferred exemplification of the invention.
This invention is an improvement over my Patent No. 1,938,063 issued December 5th, 1933. In that patent the eyelet 17 had to be molded into the closure member 15,.an expensive and troublesome proceeding, and resulting in a weak interconnection between the closure and .sealing members. This is avoided by the present inven- 7 tion.
In order that the invention may be readily generally described, it will be first briefly explained in detail.
The device 10, embodying the invention, in- 7 cludes any container 10a having a main neck 11 and an enlargedauxiliary neck portion 12, pro vided with threads of different directions or pitch.
Threadedly connected to the main neck 11 is a closure 13 having a top wall 14 overlying the end of the neck 11. Said top Wall 14 is provided With a'central opening 15 having an annular marginal flange 16 upwardly projected through an opening 17 of the molded sealing member 18. Said flange lfi'includes an annular lip 19 bent downward over the 'top wall of the sealing member. The latter is threadedly connected to the auxiliary neck portion 12.
The closure 13 may consist of sheet metal that may be relatively rigid and preferably pliable so that the lip 19 can be readily formed by spinning. The flange 16 and lip 19 are integral therewith.
To close the opening 15, a discof rigid metal 20 is interposed between the wall 14 and the neck 11.
A cork or soft metal liner 21 may be used to face the disc 20.
The top wall of the sealing member 18 may have an annular groove 22 for frangibility and a central rigid portion 23 over which the lip 19 is spun; The relation of said groove 22 to the neck 11 is such that the rigid part 23 is amply supported by the neck 11, asthrough the disc 20, to prevent accidental breakage of the frangible portion in applying pressure to form the lip 19. At the same time, the diameter of the groove is greater 0 than that of the top wall 14 or other adjacent rigid support.
It'will now be seen that the closure and sealing members 13 and 18 cannot be removed without breaking the frangible portion 22.

members, when the sealing member 18 is turned slightly. If the disc 20 is omitted; the element 21 may function as a pierceable closure;- and.if
both elements 20, 21 are omitted, the device may function as a nozzle; in either case the neck 11 will support the rigid central portion 23 of the sealing member. The disc 20 may be removably inserted or threaded into the closure member 13, or may be permanently secured thereto vas by soldering or welding, and form apartof the closure member. However, the disc 20 may form a closure for the opening 15' and/or a support, as set forth, regardless whether thei flange 16,"-lip 19, or both are integral with the closure member 13, and regardless of the nature and construction of 'the specific interconnection,whether the same be an eyelet as shown in the patentherein- A before-referred to. Primarily,;ho'wever, and in a 35 broad sense, the-invention provides, in a.device of the character described, a sheet metal closure member having anintegral annular or flange connection with the sealing member at an opening of the latter, and there being a walliportion spanning the annular or'flange connection torcause theclosure member to be wholly closedwexceptxat its lower end. .Desirablysaid wall portion may be-a partofthe closure'member asher'einbefore stated.
The manner of assembling the dBVlCB'IWiH' now be brieflydescribed. A closure member 13a,'.having a'flange' 16a. is screwed down; tight on the neck of the filled container" "10a, upon: the upper end of which the liner elements 20,:21have been previously placed. Then-the sealing member? 18 isapplied so that the flange 1611. projects through the opening Hand is screwed tight'to the neck portion 12. Finally, the" flangel6aisis spunflto form the lip 19, and the device is complete.
In use; it is'merely necessary to grasp the sealing member 18 and subject .theisame to a'torque in either direction. Axial movement-is. prevented-by abutment between themembers 13: and 18, and by the central interconnection therebetween. Hence whether the sealing'sm'ember 18 tends to move up or down, the frangible'portion 22=is broken, after'which thev sealing member can be' unscrewed, and thereafter "the closure'imember. 13 can" be grasped and unscrewed to open the container. I
It will be appreciated that various changes and modifications may be made in thedevice as shown in the'drawing, and that the same is -submitted in an illustrative and not in atlimiting sense,'the scope of the invention being defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A device including a container having a closure member, a-sealing'member having-an annular frangible portion, the closure member consisting of sheet metal and having an integral struck out portion connected to the sealing member centrally of the frangible portion, leaving an opening in the closure member, means within the closure member for closing said opening, and the closure and sealing members being individually connected with the container in such manner that the members cannot be removed except by breaking the frangible portion of: the sealing member.
2. A device including a container having a closure member consisting of sheet metal and having anintegral struck out portion, leaving an opening in the: member, a sealing member of a brittle material and having a frangible portion, said struck outportion being connected to the frangible; portion, closure means for the opening through" the closure member, and said members being individually connected with the container in such manner that the members cannot be removed except bybreaking'the frangible portion.
3.'A device including a container havingia closure cap, a sealing cap surrounding. the? closure cap, the sealing capihaving its end wall provided'with a central opening .and. a frangible portion, the closure cap having-its top :wall provided with a central openingand an'integral annular marginalflange for saidopening, saidfiange extending through the openingof the "sealing member. and. having an annular'lipoverlying the top wall of the sealing member,.a separate plate in the closure member resting against the top wall thereof and closing said opening, a sealing disc on the undersider'of the separate plate, the latter and the disc being snugly secured between the container and .the top wall of the closure member, and the closure'and sealing members being individually secured to the container in such manner that the members cannot be removed except by breaking the frangible portion of 'the sealing member.
4. A device including a container having a closure .including breakably interconnected. closure and sealing members individually connected to the container alongidiiferent-angles so that the members cannotbe-removed except by breaking the closure, the closure memberconsisting of sheet material and having an integral upstanding centralportion, the sealing-member having an openingthrough which. the central portion projects, and the latterrhaving-an annular lip overlying the sealing memberforeffecting the said interconnection between the members.
5; Adevice including a container having a closure including breakably interconnected closure and-sealing members individually connected to the container in such a manner that the members cannot :be removed except by breaking the closure, said sealing member havinga substantially central opening therethrough, the closure memberconsisting of sheet material and having an integral projection extending into said opening, and means overlying the sealing member and connected'to the projection to afford the said interconnection between the closure and sealing members.
