Patented Nov. 20, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE My invention relates to ditch building and has for its object to provide a new and'efiicient machine for rolling bituminous material into a ditch 7 bottom and sloping side walls. 32! A further object is to provide'a device for rolling the bituminous material into a ditch and walls, which will have sufficient'weight to place the material properly and which will be so constructed that the side wall rollers will seek alevel on the ditch bank to conform with the sidewalls of the ditch before'the material for coating the ditch has been placed thereon so as to form a uni form ditch with suitable slope to the side walls to prevent their breaking down orrunning .in'ex- 1i treme' hot weather. i
A still'further object isto provide a ditch roller which has a bottom roller-"at both endsto engage the bottom of the ditch and which has sloping side rollers to engage the side Walls oneach side .29 thereof with the side wall rollers to seek their own level commensurate with the slope 'of'the material on the sides of'the ditch. I
A still further object is to provide an adjustable ditchro-ller adapted to be used on wide or narrow 25 ditches by simple adjustment of the rollers.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views 39 and as described in the specification forming a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings in which I have shown the device .35 Figure 1 is a side elevation of the single type device showing the side rollers as though rolling a ditch.
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure l with the weight or material carrying box removed and -40 showing the rollers in open view. 1 Figure 3 is a plan view of the type of machine used for adjustment to wide or narrow ditches showing the device for narrow ditches.

' In the drawings I have shown the box of the device as A, mounted on suitable springs B to a. chassis C. The chassis C consists of end blocks 1 to which bearings 2 are secured on the bottom 55 side thereof and a longitudinal stringer 4 to hold the blocks spaced apart. The blocksbearings and stringers, taken togethen'form what may be termed the main frame of the machine.
ShaftsB carry rollers 5 thereon and are carried in the bearings to provide the two end: rollers 60 for the bottom of thed'itch. AtongueEis attached to each end of the device by tongue brackets 7 and lugs on the bearings 2.
Thus the device may be pulled in either direction desired.
Onto the outer side of each of: the bearing blocks 1; I provide extendingfianges Bthrough which draw bolts 9 arepasse'd. The other endiof the draw bolts 9 is attached to a bar 10 formed at right angles'to medial portion of the base of a U-shaped roller bracket 11. The bracket 11 has each leg bored to receive the ends of a. shaft 12 and the shaft 12 carries a roller 13 therein. The bolts 9, bars 10, U-shaped brackets-ll, and the associated parts, taken togethenconstitute what may be calledsupplemental or side frames. These frames are shown as made up of the several parts. named, but it is not essential that they be so formed,. as any suitable method of construction may be employed.
Each end of the device is identical and the numbers given to one are used likewise on the other end and the two side rollers on each side of the device are secured together in fixed relation to each other by tie bars 14 and 15 extending from each axle or shaft 12. r
In the form shown in Figures 3 and 4 the end rollers are identical with the rollers 5, with a like tongue F secured'by tongue brackets 17 to the bearing blocks 18. The side rollers 19 and 20 on each side of the device are carried in like U-shaped brackets 21 with link bars 22 and 23 spacing the rollers apart as in the other views. The blocks 24 which are formed on the base of the bracket 21 are attached to the draw link bars 25 by passing the bars through holes therein and securing them in place by suitable nuts 26. These link bars 25 are made longer and carry bearings 27 therein spaced near the eye bolt end 28 of the bars 25 which secures the bars to the blocks 24. Thus a cross shaft 30 is carried in the bearings 27 back of the rollers 16. Onto this shaft I then place adjustable auxiliary main rollers 31 and 32 which may be spaced apart by spacer sleeves 36 carried on the shaft 30 to hold the rollers spaced apart. These rollers may be set at any width desired as the spacers therebetween may be varied in length and the draw bars 25 may be passed through any of the holes33 in the bracket 34 on the side of 110 the bearing blocks 18. As these rollers are spaced apart so the rollers 19 and 20 are spaced apart being guided and held in position by the draw bars 25. Suitable brace bars will be provided to brace the various parts of the machine, as necessary for strength sufficient to accomplish the work desired of the machine. Here again the brackets 21 and blocks 24 with the links 22 and bars 25, taken together, constitute supplemental frames, one for each side of the machine. As in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, these frames support the side rollers here marked 19 and 20; but in this arrangement these supplemental frames also carry bearings 27 for the shafts of the auxiliary main rollers 31 and 32, so that these bearings may be moved in and out as the frames are adjusted laterally, as required by variations in the width of ditches to be lined.
As shown in Figure 5 the side rollers may be spring held in place by the springs 35 as shown in dotted lines so that the rollers will have sufficient give and tension. These springs are secured to the stringers 4 or some other part of the chassis C.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim:
1. In a ditch rolling device for laying bituminous material on the bottom and sides of an open ditch, the combination of rollers mounted at each end of a body; sets of spaced apart rollers mounted in said body adapted to roll the sloping sides of the ditch; cross shafts mounted at either end of said body near said bottom rollers; sets of rollers mounted on said shafts adapted to be adjusted as to width spacing the side rollers apart simultaneously to roll a wide ditch or narrow ditch with the same device.
2. In a ditch lining machine, the combination of a frame structure comprising a main frame and supplemental side frames arranged at an angle to the plane of the main frame, rollers of equal length supported for rotation bythe main frame near the ends thereof for rolling the lining in the bottom of the ditch, and supplemental rollers for rotation in the supplemental frames for rolling the lining on the sides of the ditch.
3. In a ditch lining machine, the combination of a frame structure comprising a main frame and supplemental side frames arranged at an angle to the plane of the main frame, rollers supported for rotation by the main frame near the ends thereof for rolling the lining in the bottom of the ditch, and pairs of supplemental rollers mounted for rotation in the supplemental frames for rolling the lining on the sides of the ditch.
4. In a ditch lining machine, the combination of a frame structure comprising a main frame and supplemental frames one for either side of the main frame positioned at an angle with respect thereto, main rollers supported for rotation on the main frame one at either end thereof for rolling the lining in the bottom of the ditch, auxiliary main rollers adjustable laterally with respect to the main rollers and supported by the frame structure behind the main rollers to roll the bottoms of ditches of various widths, and 100 supplemental rollers mounted for rotation in the supplemental frames for rolling the lining on the sides of the ditch.
5. In a ditch lining machine, the combination of a main frame, supplemental side frames one 16 on either side of the main frame and adjustable laterally thereon, main rollers supported for rotation on the main frame one at either end thereof to roll the lining in the bottom of the ditch, auxiliary main rollers rotatably mounted n on the supplemental side frames and adjustable laterally therewith so as to conform to the bottom Width of the ditch to be lined, pairsrof supplemental rollers one on either side of the machine mounted for rotation on the supple- 1 mental side frames so as to be moved therewith for rolling the lining on the sides of the ditch.
