' In this villustrative embodiment of the invention there is shown a coal mining apparatus of the wheel mounted universal type adapted to operate from the mine trackway. This mining apparatus generally comprises a truck frame l mounted on Wheels 2 adapted to run along a mine trackway 3. Mounted at the forward endl of the truck frame 1 and adjustable verticallyk relative to the truck by improved elevating mechanism generally designated 4.- is a horizontal turntable base 5 having supported thereon for rotative movement relative thereto about a vertical axis a horizontal turntable 6. Pivotally mounted on this turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a transverse horizontal axis (as indicated at 7) is a machine body or support 8 carrying at its forward end improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism generally designated 9. Supported on the rear end of the truck frame 1 is a truck driving mechanism generally designated 10, and associated therewith is improved means 11 for swinging the machine body, together with the cutting mechanism carried thereby, horizontally relative to the turntable base. Also associated with the truck driving mechanism is the improved elevating mechanism 4 for adjusting the turntable vertically relative to the truck. The kerf cutting mechanism 9 is adjustable into positions to cut horizontal kerfs in diierent parallel planes including positions at or near the level of the mine bottom or at the level of the mine roof, and vertical kerfs, while the truck driving mechanism 10 is operative to drive the truck wheels to propel the apparatus along the mine trackway at either a relatively high transport speed or at a relatively low cutting speed as will hereinafter be more fully described.
The turntable base 5 consists of a circular` frame 12 (see Fig. 5) having a plane bottom surface and an upstanding flange at its outer periphery. The turntable 6 is swiveled on this frame within a bearing sleeve 13 and there is also provided a central swivel mounting 14 for the turntable. Herein formed integral with the turntable 6 at opposite sides thereof are upstanding bearing brackets 15 receiving transverse trunnions 16 secured in a suitable manner to the sides of the machine body 8, and these brackets and trunnions form the transverse pivotal mounting for the machine body. In the present construction the mechanism for effecting tilting movement of the machine body together with the cutting mechanism about the transverse axis 7 herein comprises a non-rotatable screw 17 pivotally connected at 18 to a block 19 suitably secured to a rearwardly projecting frame portion 20 of the turntable 6. As shown in Fig. 4 threadedly engaging this screw is a nut 25 provided with a hand wheel 2l. The nut 20 is provided with a trunnion mounting to permit a slight tilting movement thereof as the machine body is swung relative to the turntable and herein comprises swivel plates 22 having curved bearing portions engaging curved seats 23 formed on a bracket 24 secured in a suitable manner to the rear end of the machine body. These swivel plates are provided with axial openings 25 through which the screw 17 extends, while the arms of the bracket are provided with similar openings 26. It will thus be seen that when the operator suitably rotates the hand wheel 21 the machine body 8 together with the cutting mechanism carried thereby may be tilted either upwardly or downwardly about the transverse axis 7. It will be evident that as the body is tilted about its axis relative to the turntable the screw 17 swings about its pivot 18 and that the nut 20 has a slight tilting movement within its trunnion mounting.
Carried within the rear end of the machine body 8 is a motor 27 which may be of the reversible electric type and this motor is adapted t0 drive the mechanisms for driving and adjusting the cutting mechanism as hereinafter described.
The improved ker cutting mechanism 9 comprises a cutter carrying head 28 adjustably mounted on the forward end of the machine body for rotation about a 'longitudinal axis. Formed on the front end of the machine body 8 is a flange 29 and secured to this ange as by screws 30 is an annular retaining and bearing sleeve 3l having an inwardly directed ange 32. Between the iiange 32 and a shoulder 33 also formed upon the front end of the machine body there is rotatably mounted a sleeve 34: which is secured as by screws 35 to a projecting neck member 36 by which the cutter carrying head is supported. The neck member 36 also has herein formed integral therewith a pair of parallel portions 37 to which guideways hereinafter described are secured, these members being connected adjacent their lower ends by a transverse web 3S and being connected by webs 39 to the neck member 36, while curved webs 40 serve to connect the portions 37 with a generally circular frame member or housing l1 which will be more fully described. To the members 37 there are secured parallel guideways 42 extending perpendicularly to the neck axis and in which there are slidable guide members 43, these being secured to members i4 which are fastened in a suitable manner to the cutter supporting frame 45. It will be observed that the member 4.5 has secured to the lower end thereoi an annulus 46 which, together with an annular shoulder 47 upon the frame member 45, provides an annular guideway for a rotatable frame member 48 to which there is secured as at 49 a frame 50 which carries an elongated plane cutter bar 51. Mounted on the margin of this cutter bar is a usual endless cutter bit carrying cutter chain 52.
The mechanism for effecting rotation of the cutter carrying head 28 about the axis of the neck herein comprises a shaft 53 fixed to the forward end of the longitudinally extending armature shaft 54 of the motor. This shaft 53 carries a spur pinion 55 meshing with a spur gear 56. As shown in Fig. 6 this spur gear is keyed at 57 to a longitudinally extending shaft 58 suitably journaled within the machine body and having secured thereto at its forward end a bevel pinion 59 meshing with reverse bevels 60 and 6l. These reverse bevels are alternatively connectible by friction clutches 62 and 63 of a usual design to a transverse shaft 64 suitably journaled within the machine body. Secured to this shaft is a worm 65 meshing with a worm wheel 66 (see also Fig. 8) keyed at 67 to a longitudinally extending shaft 68 suitably journaled within the machine body. This shaft 68 is connectible by a sliding clutch device 69 to an alined jf shaft 70 having secured thereto at its forward end a spur pinion 7l meshing with an internal gear 72 herein formed integral with the sleeve 34. It will thus be seen that upon suitable application of the friction clutches 62, 63 and conj.:

cured as by a key 74 to the shaft 53 and aimed Cil with the shaft 53 is a longitudinally extending transmission shaft suitably journaledwithin the machine body and cutter head supporting frame. This shaft 75 has secured thereto as by a key 76 (see also Fig. 3) a bevel pinion 77 meshing with a large bevel gear 78 enclosed within the frame or housing 41. This bevel gear 78 is connected in non-rotative relationtoja nut element 79 by screws or other securing devices 80. Coaxial with the nut elment 79 is a splined sleeve 81 which at :its upper end is splined to a sleeve member 82. This sleeve mem-` ber is alternatively connectible by a sliding clutch device 83 to a stationary member 84 secured to theframe 41 or to thenut member 79. If desired, the member 84 may be connectedto the cutter head frame by a yieldable clutch device as described in a copending lapplication to one C. G. Boudette, Ser. No. 694,222, filed Feb. 21, 1924, now matured into Patent No. 1,819,697, patented Aug. 18, 1931. Suitable clutch operating mechanism is provided including a pivoted shipper yoke 85 secured to an operating shaft 86. Also secured to this shaft externally of the cutter head frame is an operating lever 87 (see Figs. 1 and 2). Threadedly engaging the nut 79 l isa screw shaft 88 having splineways 89 therein cooperating with splines 90 upon the member 81. This screw shaft 88 has a collar 92 thereon engaging a suitable combined bearing and supporting means 93 for the housing or frame 45 and the mechanism supported thereby so that the screw shaft 88 is adapted to effect adjustment of the cutter bar supporting frame 45 along the guideways 42 toward and from the neck axis. yIt will thus be seen that when the clutch device 83 is moved into a position to connect the sleeve 81 to the stationary` member 84, the screw shaft 88, due to its splined connection with the sleeve 81, is held against rotation and that upon rotation of the nut member 79 the screw shaft is moved axially toeffect adjustment of the cutter bar 51 toward or from the neck axis, depending upon the direction of motor rotation. It will also be noted that when the clutch device 83 is shifted into its opposite position, connecting the sleeve 81 to the bevel gear 78, the sleeve 81 and screw shaft 88 may be rotated together Without axial adjustment of the shaft, and at that time the screw shaft acts only as a transmission shaft for effecting ydrive of the cutter chain 52. To this end a cutter chain drive sprocket 95 is provided, engaging and driving cutter chain 52. This sprocket 95 is connectible to the shaft 88 by means of a sliding clutch device 96 having any suitable operating means including a pivoted shipper yoke 97 connected through a crank 98 to an operating shaft 99. Secured to thisshaft externally of the frame r45 is an operating lever 100 (see Figs. 2 and 7).
Mechanism is also employed for effecting swinging movement of the cutter bar 51 relative to the frame 45 and herein comprises a spur gear 102 (see Fig. 3) secured for rotation with the shaft 88 and meshing as shown in Fig. 7 with spur gears 103 and 104. Rotatable with the spur gear 103 is a Worm 105 meshing with a slow speed worm wheel 106. This worm wheel is connectible by a usual friction clutch 107 to a transverse shaft 108 having fixed thereto a worm 109 meshing with a worm Wheel 110 suitably journaled within the frame 45. As shown in Fig. 3, this worm wheel is keyed at 111 to a shaft 112 having secured thereto a spur pinion 113 meshing with an internal gear 114 formed on the annular supporting member 48 for the cutter bar. Rotatable with the spur gear is a worm 115 meshing with a fast speed worm wheel 116 having'its kteeth inclined oppositely from the teeth of the worm wheel 106 and operative upon ap- ,plication of a friction clutch 117 to drive the shaft 108 at a fast speed in a direction opposite from the slow speed drive described above. It will thus be seen that upon application of one or the other of the friction clutches 107,117 the cutter bar 51 may be swung about a pivotal axis coincident With the axis of the shaft 88 at a relatively high bar positioning speed in one directionyor` ata relatively slow cutting speed in the opposite direction. The worm gearing 109, is of the self-locking type and therefore automatically maintains the cutter bar in its different angular positions of adjustment. As the specific mechanisms for adjusting the cutter bar into different parallel planes toward `and from the .neck axis, for swinging the cutter bar and for driving the cutter chain are clearly described in a copending applicati-on to one Morris P. Holmes, Ser. No. 694,139, filed Feb. 20, 1924, now matured into Patent No. 1,819,778, patented Aug. 18, 1931, further description of the same is thought unnecesasry. As alsodescribed in the above mentioned Holmes application, there is a suitable lock device for holding the cutter head against rotation about its axis and herein including a dog ory latch 119 (see Figs. 6, 1l and 12) secured to a shaft 120 rotatably mounted within .thefmachine body. This dog 119 is provided with lccking teeth 121 engageable with the vteeth of the internal gear 72 secured to the cutl vertically relative to the truck to vary the elevation of the cutting mechanism will now be described. Carried on the rear end of the truck frame is a motor 125 which mayv beof the reversible electric type having its armature shaft 128 connected 'by a coupling 127 toL a longitudi- I.

Fixed to this shaft 128 is a worm 129 (see Fig. 9) meshing with a worm wheel 130 rotatably mounted on a transverse shaft 131 suitably journaled within bearings 132 carried by a base casting 133 suitably seil# cured to the truck frame. This worin wheel 130 may be operatively connected to the shaft 131 by means of a friction clutch 134 of a usual design having suitable 'cam operating mechanism including a hand lever 135. Fixed to this transverse shaft 131 is a brake drum 136 which is engaged by a friction band 137 also arranged to be controlled bythe hand lever 135. When this hand lever is swung in one direction the clutch is applied and the brake released and in the opposite direction the brake is applied and the clutch is released although it is obvious that separate operating means may be employed for the clutch and brake if desired. Alined with this transverse shaft 131 and connected thereto by a coupling 138 is a shaft 139 suitably journaled within a base casting 140 suitably secured tothel truck frame. Mounted on the shaft 139 and connectiblethereto by a usual jaw clutch 141 is a bevel pinion 142 meshing with abevelgear 143 Gil secured to a vertical shaft 144 suitably journaled within the base casting 146. Journaled on the shaft 144 is a drive sprocket 145 and this sprocket is connectible to the shaft by a usual jaw clutch member 146 splined to the shaft.r This clutch member 146 operated by a pivoted shipper yoke 147 having an operating handle 148. The drive sprocket 145 is connected by an endless chain connection 149, passing around usual idler sprockets, to drive sprockets 156 fixed, as shown in Fig. to the lower ends of a plurality of vertical screw shafts 151 suitably journaled at their lower ends within bearing members 152 carried 'by the truck frame. These screw shafts are threadedly connected at 153 to nut members 154 herein formed integral with tubular members 155 depending from the turntable base 5. It will be obse "ed that the tubular members 155 and the vertical screw shafts are telescopically arranged and when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 5 the screw shafts are housed entirely within the tubular members. It will thus be seen that when the clutches 141 and 146 are connected and the friction clutch 134 applied, the turntable may be vertically elevated relative to the truck by the motor 125 through the connections including the worm gearing 129, 130, transmission shaft 131, bevel gearing 142, 143, vertical shaft 144, the chain and sprocket connection 145, 149, 159 and vertical screw shafts 151 engaging the nuts 154 carried oy the tubular members 155 secured to the turntable base. As the motor 125 is reversible the turntable may be adjusted by power either upwardly or downwardly relative to the truck.
Associated with this vertical turntable adjusting mechanism is the improved mechanism for effecting rotation of the turntable about its axis relative to truck and herein comprises a chain sprocket 157 supported on the vertical shaft 144 and also connectible to this shaft by the jaw clutch device 146, the latter being so arranged that the sprockets and 157 are only alternatively connectible to the shaft 144. This sprocket 157 is connected by an endless chain connection 158 to a chain sprocket 159 (see Fig. 5) secured by a key 169 to the lower end of a vertical shaft 161. This shaft is journaled at its lower end within a bearing 162 carried by the truck frame and is telescopically arranged with and split-.ed at 163 to a hollow shaft 164. The shaft 164 is journaled within a bearing 165 carried by the turntable base and has formed integral therewith a spur pinion 166 meshing with the teeth of a large internal gear 167 preferably formed integral with the turntable 6. It will thus be seen that when the jaw clutch 146 is shifted to connect the'sprocket 157 to the shaft 144, the clutch 141 connected and the clutch 134 applied, the turntable G may be swung about its pivot in one direction at a relatively slow speed by the motor 125 through worm gearing 129, 139, shaft 131, bevel gearing 142, 143, shaft 144, chain and sprocket connections 157, 153 and 159, and telescopic shafts 163, 164 and the spur pinion 166 meshing with the internal gear 167. It is evident that upon reversal of the motor 125 the turntable may be swung about its pivot at a slow speed in the opposite direction. It will be noted that the telescopic shafts 163, 164 permit power rotation of the turntable 6 irrespective of the position of vertical adjustment of the turntable base relative to the truck, the splined shaft 164 sliding relative to the shaft 163 as the turntable is vertically adjusted.
To hold the turntable 6 in its'different adjusted positions relative to the turntable base any suitable means may be employed. I-lerein a toothed locking block or dog 169 is mounted for sliding movement radially with respect to the large internal gear 167 within a guideway 170 formed on the turntable base and arranged in a housing 171 secured to the frame 12. The block may be moved between its locking and releasing positions by a set screw 172.
Now referring to the truck wheel driving mechanism 10, it will be noted that journaled on the shaft 131 is a spur gear 174 connectible with the shaft by the'jaw clutch 141, the latter being so arranged as to only alternatively connect the gear elements 142 and 174 to the shaft 139. This gear 174 meshes with a spur gear 175 secured to a transverse shaft 176 suitably journaled within the base casting 149. Keyed to the shaft 139 at 177 is a spur pinion 173 meshing with a spur gear 179 secured to a transverse shaft 180 arranged parallel with the shaft 139 and similarly journaled within the base casting 14.0. Splined at 131 to the shaft 180 is a slidable pinion 182 adapted to mesh with a spur gear 183 keyed at 184 to the hub of the spur gear 174. 1f desired, operating mechanism may be provided for the clutch 141 and the sliding pinion 182 so that when one is connected the other is released. As illustrated, secured to the shaft 175 is a chain sprocket 135 connected by an endless chain connection 186 to a chain sprocket 187 secured to a transverse shaft 188 suitably journaled in bearings 189 carried by the truck frame. Also secured to the shaft 138 is a chain sprocket 199 connected by an endless chain connection 191 to a sprocket 192 secured to the rear truck axle. The front and rear truck axles are connected together by a usual chain and sprocket connection 193. It will thus be seen that when the jaw clutch 141 is shifted to connect the spur gear 174 to the shaft 139 and when the pinion 182 is out of mesh with the gear 183 the truck Wheels may be driven at a relatively high speed from the motor 125 through worm gearing 129, 130, friction clutch 134, shaft 131, spur gearing 174, 175, and the chain and sprocket connections 186, 191 and 192. It will also be evident that when the jaw clutch 141 is in its released position and the spur pinion 182 is in meshing engagement with the spur gear 183, the truck wheels may be driven at a relatively slow cutting speed through the additional reduction gearing 178, 179, 182, 133. 1t will be evident that upon reversal of the motor 125 the truck Wheels may be driven in a reverse direction at either a relatively high or a relatively low spec The brake 136 is provided for holding the truck wheels against rotation during certain of the cutting operations and controlling the apparatus when moving along a steeply inclined trackway in a well known manner.
Electrical energy may be conducted to the electrical controlling apparatus 194 for the motors 27 and 125 through a usual flexible conductor cable 195 wound upon a cable reel 196 supported on the truck. This cable reel is driven by the motor 125 through the following connections: Journaled on the shaft 188 (see Fig. 9)
is a chain sprocket 197 and this sprocket is connectible to the shaft by a jaw clutch member 198 having any suitable operating means. This sprocket engages and drives an endless chain connection 199 connected to a chain sprocket 200 secured to a transverse shaft 201.
'Also secured to this shaft is a pulley 202 connected by an endless belt 203 to a pulley 204 suitably secured to the cable reel 196. It will be evident that as the truck wheelsare driven the cable reel may be also rotated to wind in or pay out the conductor cable.
The preferred inode of operation ofthe im,- proved mining apparatus will now be described. The apparatus is propelled forward about the mine at a relatively fast transport speed through the truck driving-mechanism 10 driven by the motor 125. The apparatus may be propelled in a rearward direction along the mine trackway at a relatively fast transport speed simply by reversing the motor 125. When the apparatus is traveling about the mine the cutter bar 51 is disposed in its transport position above the top of the track rails as shown in Fig. 2. When the working face is reached and it is desired to make a swinging cut at or near thelevel of the mine bottom, the fast truck wheel drive is disconnected from the motor 125 by releasing the friction clutch 134 and the jaw clutch 141. The fast speed bar swing-controlling clutch 117 is then applied and the cutter bar 51 is swung about its pivot at a relatively fast bar positioning speed from the position shown in Fig. 1 laterally to a position adjacent the right hand rib ofL the entry, the friction clutch 117 thereafter being released. The operator then shiftsthe clutch device 83 to a position to connect the sleeve 81 to the relatively stationary member 84 and upon actuation of the driving gearing 77, 78 thecutter bar may be moved rectilinearly along the guideways 42 downwardly until it occupies a position at or near the level of the mine bottom as shown in Fig. 13. The clutch device 83 yis then shifted downwardly to disconnect the sleeve 81 from the relatively stationary member 84 and to connect the sleeve 81 to the gear 78 and the clutch 96 moved to a position to connect the cutter chain drivesprocket 95 to the shaft 88 and as a result the cutter chain 52 is rapidly circulated about the margin of the cutter bar 51. The slow bar swing controlling clutch 107" is then applied and the cutter bar is swung transversely in front of the trackway to make an arcuate cut beneath the coal. When the cutter bar reaches a position adjacent the left hand rib the friction clutch 107 `is released. After the swinging cut has been completed, the cutter chain is disconnected from its drive, the clutch device .83
shifted to connect the sleeve 81 tothe relatively stationary member 84 and upon reversal of the motor 27 the cutter bar is moved upwardly rectilinearly along the guideways 42 to the position shown in Fig. 2,v the clutch device 83 thereafter being moved to its neutral position. The ap,- paratus is then propelled rearwardly along the mine trackway under the propulsion of the truck wheel driving mechanism l0l driven by the motor 125.
If it is desired to cut a horizontal kerf at or near the level of the mine bottom outside of and below the level of the mine trackway, the operator releases the turntable lock 169, starts the motor 125 in the proper direction and then shifts the clutch 141 to a. position to connect the bevel pinion 142 to the shaft 139 and the clutch 145 to connect the sprocket157 to the shaft 144, and upon application of the friction clutch 134 the turntable 6, together with the cutting mecha'- nism supported thereby, is swung horizontally from the position shown in Fig. 1 tothefull line position as indicatedat A in Fig. 14. During position shown in Fig. l5.
horizontal swinging movementk of the turntable the cutter bar 51 may be swung simultaneously about itsv pivotr in the opposite direction under the control of the slow speed bar swing friction controlling clutch 107 until the parts assume the position shown. When the parts assume the position indicated in fullr lines in Fig. 14y with the bar pivot lying outside the mine trackway, the operator releases the friction clutch 107 and the clutches 141 and 146. The operator then locks the turntable and shifts the clutch device 83 to a position to connect the sleeve 81 to the relativelystationary member 84 and upon actuation of the driving gearing 77, y78 the cutter bar is moved rectilinearly downwardly along the guideways 42 until it occupies a position kat or near the level of the mine bottorn, the cutter bar beingpositioned relative to the mine bottom as shown in Fig. 13 at that time. The clutch device 83 is then moved to connect the sleeve 81 and the nut 79 and the clutch 96 is connected, thereby effecting circulation of the cutter chain about the margin of the cutter bar 51. The pinion 182 is then slid into meshing engagement with` the gear 183 and upon application of the friction clutch 134 the apparatus may be propelled forwardly along the mine trackway at a slow cutting speed, sumping the cutter bar 51 beneath the coal from position A shown in Fig. 14 to position B indicated in dotted lines in that figure. The friction clutch 134 is then released and the brake 136, 137 set. The operator then releases thek turntable lock 169 and shifts the clutch 141 to a position to connect the bevel pinion 142 to the shaft 139, and
upon reversal of the motor and application w of friction clutch 134, the turntable 6, together .with the cutting mechanism supported thereby,
is swung horizontally at a cutting speed to effect horizontal swinging movement of the cutter bar in its plane. During the initial swinging move.- ment of the turntable, the cutter bar 51 is swung about its pivot in a reverse direction until the parts assume the straight line position wherein the cutter bar extends parallel to a line includ- 136, 137 is released and the pinion 182 is connected to gear 183 and upon applicationV of friction clutch 134 the apparatus may be propelled rearwardly along the mine trackway at a slow cutting speed, moving the cutter from the position E in Fig. 14 to position F in that figure. The cutter bar is then sumped in, swung transversely in its plane and withdrawn from the coal in accordance with the usual arcwall system of cutting. lt will herein be noted that during any of the horizontal cutting operations described above, if desired the cutting mechanism may be tilted about the transverse axis 7 simply by adjusting the hand Wheel nut 2O to tilt the cutter bar either upwardly or downwardly about a transverse axis to change its angle relative to the horizontal.
A shear or vertical cut may be inserted in the coal face simply by applying one or the other of the reverse frictions 62, 63 and connecting the clutch 69, thereby enabling the cutting mechanism to be rotated about the neck axis to bring the cutter bar into a position to swing vertically as shown in Fig. 16. During the shearing operation, the cutter bar is rst sumped in, then swung downwardly and thereafter withdrawn from the coal in a manner similar to that described above in regard to horizontal cutting in accordance with the arcwall method. t will further be noted that the cutter bar may be moved toward and from the neel: into different parallel planes in any of its positions about the neck axis, thereby enabling the machine to cut parallel horizontal kerfs and parallel vertical ire-ris in a plurality of intersecting planes.
As a result of this invention it `will be noted that an improved mining apparatus is provided which is adapted to cut horizontally at or near the level of the mine bottom outside of the mine trackway and below the track rails and also to make shear or vertical cuts, thereby facilitating the shooting of the coal from the solid and increasing the quantity of lump coal obtainable. It will further be noted that an improved universal coal cutter is provided having improved adjustable cutting mechanism whereby the cutter bar may be positioned to cut in different parallel planes either vertically or horizontally. It will further be noted that an improved coal cutter is provided wherein the adjusting mechanism for the cutting mechanism is extremely ilexible, it being possible to operate the machine as a mounted bottom cutter, top cutter, shear cutter, and slabbing machine, and it will still further be noted that the various mechanisms of the machine are under friction control and are relatively simple and rugged in structure. These and other advantages and uses of the improved mining apparatus will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While there is in this application shown one embodiment which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this embodiment of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms Without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as neuT and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. n a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine trackway, a frame vmounted thereon for rotation about a vertical axis, mechanism for bodily elevating said frame relative to the support wheels, a support mounted on said frame for tilting movement relative thereto about a transverse axis, cutting mecha nism mounted on said second support and including a pivoted cutter bar, motor operated devices for rotating said frame about its axis relative to said wheeled support, for swinging said cutter bar about its pivot and for driving said cutting mechanism, and mechanism for tilting said second support relative to said frame.
2. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine trackwa, a turntable on said support rotatable relative thereto about a vertical mechanism for bodily elevating said turntable relative to the support Wheels, a support mounted on said turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a horizontal axis, cutting mechanism on said. second support, a motor carried by said turntable for driving said cutt'ng mechanism, a separate motor on said wheeled support, mechanism driven by said separate motor for elevating said turntable relative to the support wheels, motor operated mechanism for rotating said turntable relative to said wheeled support, and mechanism driven by said separate motor driving the truck wheels to propel the apparatus along the mine trackway.
3. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine trackway, a frame mounted thereon for rotation relative thereto about a vertical axis, mechanism for bodily elevating said frame relative to the support wheels, a support mounted on said frame for tilting movement relative thereto about a transverse axis, cutting mechanism mounted on said second support for rotation about a longitudinal axis and including Aa pivoted cutter bar, motor operated devices for rotating said frame about its axis relative to said wheeled support, for rotating said cutting mechanism about its axis, for swinging said cutter bar about its pivot, and for driving the cutting mechanism, and mechanism for tilting said second support relative to said frame.
4. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine trackway, a turntable on said support rotatable relative thereto about a vertical axis, said turntable being adjustable vertically into diiierent elevated positions relative to the support wheels, a support mounted on said turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a horizontal axis, cutting mechanism on said second support including a cutter carrying head rotatable about a longitudinal. axis, a motor carried by said turntable for rotating said head about its axis and for driving the cutting mechanism, a separate motor on said Wheeled support, mechanism driven by said last mentioned motor for bodily elevating said turntable relative to the support Wheels,
motor operated mechanism for rotating said turntable relative to said Wheeled support, and mechanism driven by said last mentioned motor for driving the support Wheels to propel the apparatus along the mine trackway.
5. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine trackway, a turntable on said support rotatable relative thereto about a vertical axis, said turntable being adjustable vertically into different elevated positions relative to the support wheels, a support mounted on said turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a horizontal axis, cutting mechanism on said second support including a cutter carrying head rotatable about a longitudinal axis and a cutter bar pivotally mounted on said head, a motor carried by said turntable for rotating said head about its axis and for driving the cutting mechanism, motor operated mechanism for swinging said cutter bar about its pivot relative to said head, a separate motor on said wheeled support, mechanism driven by said last mentioned motor for bodily elevating said turntable relative to the support Wheels, and plural predetermined speed mechanism driven by said last mentioned motor for driving the support wheels at a relatively high transport speed and at a relatively low cutting speed to propel the apparatus bodily along the mine trackway `to eiect sumping and withdrawal movements of said cutter bar in any position of said cutter head about its axis.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck adapted to run along a mine trackway, a turntable on said truck rotatable about a vertical axis, a supporting frame for said turntable on which the latter is swiveled, mechanism for bodily elevating said turntable supporting frame relative to said truck to vary the elevation oi' the turntable, cutting mechanism on said turntable including a cutter carrying head rotatableA about a longitudinal axis and a cutter bar pivotally mounted on said head, said turntable and head being adjustable relative to said truck to position said cutter bar to cut a horizontal kerf outside and below the level of the mine trackway and for cutting a vertical kerf at either side of the head axis, a motor carried by said turntable for rotating said head about its axis and for driving the cutting mechanism, motor operated mechanism for swinging said cutter bar relative to said cutter head, a separate motor on said truck, and plural speed mechanism driven by said last mentioned motor for driving the truck wheels at a relatively high transport speed and at a relatively low cutting speed to propel the apparatus bodily along the mine trackway to effect sumping and withdrawal y movements of said cutter bar in any position of said cutter head about its axis and including said bottom cutting position of said cutter bar.

In a mining apparatus, a Wheeled truck, a horizontal turntable thereon, mechanism for bodily elevating said turntable relative to said truck, a support mounted on said turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a transverse axis, cutting mechanism carried by said support including a cutter carrying head rotatable about a longitudinal axis and a cutter bar pivotally mounted on said head, mechanism for adjusting said cutter bar toward and from the head axis, a motor carried by said support for driving said cutting mechanism, for rotating said head, and for adjusting said cutter bar, and a separate motor carried by said truck for rotating said turntable and driving the Wheels of sai truck.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck, a horizontal turntable thereon, mechanism for bodily elevating said turntable relative to said truck, a motor carried by said truck for driving the truck Wheels and for rotating said turntable, a support pivotally mounted on said turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a horizontal axis, mechanism for tilting said support relative to said turntable, cutting mechanism carried by support including a cutter carrying head rotatable about a horizontal axis and a cutter bar carried thereby adjustable rectilinearly into different parallel planes toward and from the head axis, and a motor carried by said support for driving said cutting mechanism and for adjusting said cutter bar.

In a mining apparatus, a Wheeled truck, a frame thereon rotatable-about a vertical axis at the forward end of said truck, mechanism for bodily elevating said frame reiative to said truck, motor operated devices carried by said truck for driving the truck Wheels and rotating said frame about its axis, a support pivotally mounted on said frame for tilting movement about a horizontal axis, mechanism for tilting said support relative to said frame, cutting mechanism carried at the forward end of said support and including a cutter bar adjustable into different horizontal planes at a position below the bottom of said support and at a positionabove the top thereof, and motor operated devices carried by said support for driving said cutting mechanism and adjusting said cutter bar.

In a mining apparatus, 'a wheeled truck, a frame thereon rotatable about a vertical axis at the forward end of said truck, mechanism for bodily elevating said frame relative to said truck, motor operated devices carried by said truck for driving the truck wheels and-rotating said frame about its axis, said truck wheel driving devices including a plural predetermined speed transmission for eiecting drive of the truck wheels at a relatively high speed and at a relatively low speed, a support pivotally mounted on said frame for tilting movement about a horizontal axis, mechanism for tilting said support relative to said frame, cutting mechanism carried at the forward end of said support and including a cutter bar adjustable into different parallel horizontal and vertical positions, and motor operated devices carried by said support for driving said cutting mechanism and adjusting said cutter bar.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck, a frame thereon rotatable about a vertical axis at the forward end of said truck, mechanism for bodily elevating said frame relative to said truck, motor operated devices carried by said truck for driving the truck wheels and rotating said frame about its axis, said truck wheel driving devices including a plural predetermined speed transmission for effecting drive of ,the truck wheels at relatively high speed and at. a relatively low speed, a support pivotally mounted on said frame for tilting movement about a horizontal axis, mechanism .for tilting said support relative to vsaid frame, cutting mechanism carried at the forward end of said support and including a cutter bar adjustable into different horizontal planes below the bottomof said support and different horizontal positions above the top thereof, and motor operated devices carried by said support for driving said cutting mechanism and adjusting said cutter bar'.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a minetrackway, 'a turntable on said support rotatable relative thereto about a vertical axis, mechanism for bodily elevating said turntablerelative to the support wheels, a support mounted on said turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a horizontal transverse axis, cutting mechanism on said second support and including a cutter bar adjustable into parallel horizontalplanes relative to said support, a motor carried by said turntable for driving said cutting mechanism, a separate motor on said wheeled support, mechanism driven by said separate motor for elevating said turntable relative to the support wheels, and mechanism driven by said separate motor for driving the'truck wheels to propel the apparatus along the mine trackway.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine trackway, a turntable on said support rotatable relative thereto about a vertical axis, said turntable being adjustable vertically into different elevated positions relative to the support wheels, a support mounted on said turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a horizontal axis, cutting mechanism on said second support including a cutter carrying head rotatable about a longitudinal axis and a cutter bar pivotally mounted on said head, a motor carried by said turntable for rotating said head about its axis to position said cutter bar into parallel planes above and below the head axis and for driving the cutting mechanism, a separate motor on said wheeled support, mechanism driven by said last mentioned motor for bodily elevating said turntable relative to the support wheels, and mechanism driven by said last mentioned motor for driving the support wheels to propel the apparatus along thevadjusting mechanism, and motor operated devices for driving the truckwheels to propel the apparatus along the mine trackway.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine trackway, a turntable on said support rotatable relative thereto about a vertical axis, mechanism for bodily elevating said turntable relative .to the support wheels, a support mounted on said turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a horizontal transverse axis, cutting mechanism on said second support and including a pivoted cutter bar, a motor carried by said turntable for driving said cutting mechanism, motor operated mechanism for'swinging said cutter bar about its pivot, a separate motor on said wheeled support, mechanism driven by said separate motor for elevating said turntable relative to the support wheels, and mechanism driven by said separate motor for'driving the truck wheels to propel the apparatus bodily along a mine trackwayat'o eiTect sumping and withdrawal movements of said cutter bar.

In a mining apparatus,.a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine trackway, a turntable on said support rotatable relative thereto about a vertical axis, said turntable being adjustable verticallyinto diierent elevated positions relative to the support wheels, a support mounted on said turntable for tilting movement relative thereto about a horizontal axis, cutting mechanism on said second support including a cutter carrying head rotatable about a longitudinal axis and a cutter bar pivotally mounted on said head, a motor carried by said turntable for rotating said head about its axis and for driving the cutting mechanism, motor loperated mechanism rfor swinging said cutter bar about its pivot, a separate motor on said wheeled support, mechanism driven by said last mentioned motor for bodily elevating said turntable relative to the support wheels, and mechanism driven by said last mentioned motor for driving the support wheels to propel the apparatus bodily along the mine trackway to effect sumping and withdrawal movements of said cutter bar in any position of said head about its aXlS llllO 31. In a mining apparatus, a Wheeled truck, a horizontal turntable thereon, mechanism for bodily elevating said turntable relative to said truck, a frame on said turntable, utting mechanism on said frame including a pivoted cutter bar, mechanism for adjusting said cutter bar into different parallel planes and into intersect ing planes, mechanism for tilting said cutting mechanism about a transverse axis relative to said turntable, motor operated devices for swinging said cutter bar about its pivot, motor operated devices for driving said adjusting mecha nism, and motor operated devices for driving the truck Wheels to propel the apparatus bodily along the mine trackway to eiect sumping and Withdrawal movements of said cutter bar.

In a mining apparatus, a Wheeled truck, a horizontal turntable thereon, mechanism for bodily elevating said turntable relative to said truck, mechanism for rotating said turntable relative to said truck, a support pivotally mounted on said turntable to rock about a transverse axis, mechanism for tilting said support relative to said turntable, a second support mounted on said first support for rotation about a longitudinal axis, a third support mounted on said second support for adjustment toward and from the axis of said second support, a cutter element carrying cutter bar mounted on said third support for swinging movement relative thereto, mechanism for rotating said second support about its axis, mechanism for driving the cutting elements on said bar and for swinging said bar about its pivot relative to said third support, and mechanism for adjusting said third support toward and from the axis of said second support.
