UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'NATHANIEL M. WELLS, JR., FILLMORE, ASSIGNOR OF O NE-HALFHIS RIGHT TO JASON S. BISHOP, OF HUME, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHEESE-VATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,172, dated December 11, 1877; application filed October 13, 1877. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL M. WELLS, J r., of Fillmore, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cheese-vats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section of my cheesevat, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
My invention relates to. tilting or rocking cheese vat s; and it consists in the construc tion of jointed connections between the. supply-pipe and the pipes under the vat, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the bed or base upon which the vat is placed. B is the vat proper, placed in a box or tank, 0, and this box or tank rests upon a central rocking bar, a, placed on the bed A. b is the inlet to the pipes under the vat, and D is the pipe overhead, for supplying steam to the pipes cl.
In cheese-making it is necessary to have the vat tilt or tip up, let-ting the curd run down to one end, so that it can be easily dipped out. The usual way of connecting the pipes D b, so as to allow of such tilting, is by means of rubber hose, which is always getting out of order, bursting, burning out, slipping off the pipe, leaking steam, &c.
To obviate these difficulties Iconstruot such connections of a series of shorttubes, d d, connected in angular form by means of elbows h h, forming a series of movable joints,
so that the vat can be tipped or tilted without uncoupling the pipe.
The tubes or pipes d are provided with reverse screw-threads on their ends--that is,
right thread on one endjand left on the other end-so that they can easily be unscrewed and taken apart when necessary.
I am aware that supply-pipes with movable joint-connections are not broadly new with me, and therefore I lay no claim to such invention; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure cheese-vat, of jointed connecting-pipes, ar-
ranged between the supply-pipes and the pipe under the vat, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In-testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two'witnesses.
