LINK FOR CROSS CHAINS FOR NONSKID DEVICES Filed Jan. 27, 1954 Invcnlor I fi um Patented Nov. 20, 1934 LINK FOR CROSS-CHAIN S FOR NONSKID DEVICES Emma E. Smith, Berkshire Heights, Pa.
Application January 27, 1934, Serial No. 708,674
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a link for a cross chain of a non-skid device, the general object of the invention being to provide a link which can be easily and quickly connected to other links of 5 a cross chain and which will effectually prevent skidding and side-slipping of a wheel.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the improved link.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof. Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 1. As shown in these views, the device comprises a ring 1 having the lower or inner end of a circular stud or plug 2 fastened therein, with the loops 3 extending from diametrically opposite points of the ring, one loop extending in one direction and the other in the opposite direction, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Each loop extends slightly downwardly where it leaves the ring, as shown at 4, and then the loop curves upwardly and inwardly with its free end spaced from the ring so that the inner links of a cross member can be readily placed in the loops 3. Said links will be held in the loops, though I find it preferable to 5 bend the free ends of the loops inwardly against the ring or approximately so after the links have been placed in the loops.
The drop or downwardly extending part 4 of each loop acts to expose or render effective more of the plugs 2 and provides a deeper and firmer grip than if this drop Was not provided. As before stated, the loops are self-closing and I prefer to press them against the ring after the links have been placed in the loops.
ordinary service.
After the plug has worn, there still remains a sufficient amount of gripping surface for claim.
What is claimed is:-
A link for a cross member of a non-skid device comprising a ring having its tire engaging face flat, a plug having one end held in the ring, said end being flush with said fiat face of the ring, a pair of substantially U-shaped loops, each having a short limb and a long limb, the short limbs being connected to the ring at diametrically opposite points and the bights curving upwardly and one toward one side portion of the ring and the other toward the opposite side edge of the ring and the long limbs extending in opposite directions, with the free end of one long limb located and spaced from one side portion of the plug and the other being located adjacent and spaced from the opposite side portion.
