UNITED sTATEs PATENT oFFIcE COKE-OVEN APPARATUS Joseph van Ackeren, OHara Township, Allegheny County, Pa., assignor to The Koppers Company of Delaware, a corporation of Delaware Application January 15, 1931, Serial No. 508,915
4 Claims. (Cl. 2202-248) My invention relates to coke-oven apparatus tend to warp the outer member, since these sec'- and particularly to frames for coke-oven doors. tions are not integral with each other or with My' invention is particularly applicable to the plate member. Furthermore, since the inner frames for the doors of coke ovens of the horisections may be independently replaced without 5 zontal type and is especially adapted for use in disturbing the outer structure, the door frame 60 connection with doors of the self-sealing type. may be kept inrepair atmuch lower expense.
In the production of frames for coke-oven The details of my invention will be described in doors, it has been the practice heretofore to con'- connection with the accompanying drawings, in struct the frames in a single piece comprising a which plate portion for engaging the side wall of the Figure 1 is a view in transverse vertical sec- 65 battery and a ange portion for projecting Withtion of a portion of a coke-oven battery; in the end of the coke-oven door opening. The Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view frame has been of cast iron and the large casting of a portion of a coke-oven battery and an asso--` that is, required has been dilicult to construct ciated door frame taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 4;
and expensive becauseof its size. l Fig. 3 is a front elevational View of a door 70 Castings of this character have been diicult to frame constructed in accordance with my inmaintain in proper working order because of vention; and their tendency to warp in use. This condition Fig. 4 is a rear elevational view of the door has resulted from the fact that the inner flange frame.
has been subjected to materially higher tem- Referring particularly to Fig. 1, a coke-oven 75 peratures than the outer portion which is cooled battery 1, 'only a portion of which is shown, by contact with the atmosphere. This unequal comprises a series of oven chambers 2, only one heating has expanded the flange within the door of which appears in the drawings, a top 3, an asand caused the warping of the outer or plate porcension pipe 4 and a collecting main 5. The battion. When these frames have been used for tery is alsoprovided with the usual regenerators 80 self-sealing doors of the type in which an outer 6, one of whichv is shown, a producer gas main ilange portion has been adapted to engage ametal 7 and a coke-oven gas main 8. knife-edge portion such as is employed in the Each coke-oven chamber 2 is provided with'a Wolff self-sealing door (British Patent 314,281 removable door 9 that is positioned within a and United States Patent 1,908,467), the warping frame 10, to close the doorway to the 'coking 35 of the frame has seriously interfered with the chambers, the details of which are shown in successful operation of the sealing means. Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
It has been proposed heretofore to construct Each door frame 10, which is adapted for use the frame of alloys of metal that are highly rein connection with self-sealing doors of the sistant to warping strains and that maintain the Woll type (British Patent 314,281), comprises 90 alinement, of the frames to a higher degree than a substantially single-piece metallic door-frame inthe case of cast iron. Such frames have, howor outer plate member 12, which engages the ever, been very expensive by reason of the nature outer surface of the side wall 13 of the battery of the material employed. and extends continuously around the border of 40 In accordance with the present invention, I the door opening and door body, as showninFigs. 95
provide a frame for use in connection with self- 2 and 3. The member l2 is held in position to re- Sealillg dOOIS that iS S0 COIlStl'llCted 8S t0 mantain the side walls of the battery by buckstays 14, tain its alinement. The frame is constructed of which are in the form of channel members and an outer portion or plate member for engaging the are arranged in pairs, each pair being `disposed side wall of the battery around the opening of between adjacent ovens. The inner edge of the 100 the oven door. The inner portion, which correplate member 12 is provided with an outwardly- Y spends to the ange Of the 1151181 Oven dOOI, COmextending ange 15 for a purpose to be later deprises a plurality of relatively short sections, each scribed, of which is detachably secured to the outer plate The inner portion of the door frame comprises 5o member. These sections may be independently an inner lining 16' constituted of a series of krel- 105 removed or replaced. atively short sections 16 that are angular in cross- This arrangement insures that the frame will section, as best appears in Fig. 2. On` ange maintain its alinement by reason of the fact that 17 extends parallel with the opening of the oven,A the higher temperatures to which the interior while the other ange 18 extends parallel with the .55 sections are subjected will'not cause strains that plate member 12 and is adapted to be detachably 1 10;
passageway 21 through the plate member 12.-
Through these alined openings or passageways, a mixture of re clay and sand mortar is introduced to provide an insulating or cementitious material, indicated at 22, between the plate member l2-and the refractory material of the battery wall.
Asbestos rope 23 is preferably inserted between the inner edge of the flange 17 in order to insulate the latter from the relatively high' temperature ofthe oven wall. Any suitable material, such as rock wool 24, may be inserted in the spaces between the edges of the adjoining plate members 12.
The`door opening is closed by a door body indicated generally by the reference numeral 26 of the Wolff self-sealing type aforesaid which comprises a framework 27 for engaging the projecting edges of the sections 16. The door is also provided with a member 28 having outwardly projecting anges 29, each of which is provided with a spring plate member orI elastic sealing plate 30 for pressing a metal strip 31 having a substantially knife edge 31' into firm engagement with the outwardly-projecting flange 15 of the frame 12. The surface 15 of the flange 15 constitutes an abuttingsealing surface and the knife edge 31 constitutes the sealing edge of the metallic sealing members for forming an edged and abutting sealing engagement between them.
In the operationl of the battery, the sections 16 vbecome more highly heated than the plate member 12,-but the strains due to expansion within the sections are not transmitted to the plate member 12. The plate members 12, by reason of their contactwith the atmosphere, re-
e main relatively cool and there is, therefore, little tendency for them to warp.
In view of the difference in conditions to which they are subjected, the sections' 16 have a short life relatively to that of the plate member 12 and it is, accordingly, necessary to replace them much oftener, In they construction of the prior art,- it was necessary to remove the buckstays in-order that theintegral frame might be removed and replaced because of defective portions in the 'door opening/r In the door frame of my invention, however, it is only necessary to remove the bolts 19 fromthe defective sections lfand the latter may be removed and, replaced with new sections. All of this may be accomplished without disturbing either the buckstays or the plate member 12. `The advantages of an arrangement that will permit the replacement of defective sections without disturbing the buckstays or the outer portion of the door frame will be appreciated by those familiar with the difllculties that have attended the replacement of door frames of the prior art.
Furthermore, theseparation of the'door frame' into several parts insures vthat the flange members 15 will maintain their alinement whereby they may effectively co-operate with the sealing means on the door to retain the gases of distillation within the oven chamber.
T'he separation of the door frame-into its parts the strains that were present in an integral struc- -ture. Also, in view of the fact that the inner sections may be easily replaced'individually, they may be made of ordinary east iron because it is not necessary that they have the long life that is desirable for the outer portion of the frame.
'Ihe foregoing and other advantages will be appreciated by those skilled in the art of construction and operation of coke-oven batteries.
