Description
NOVG, 1934 N. RITCH 1,979,773
PENCIL HOLDER Filed May, 29, 19.54
liorney Patented Nov. 6, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
The present invention appertains to new and useful improvements in card tables and more particularly to a card table provided with means for retaining pencils and like articles within convenient reach.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a pencil holder for card tables which is constructed in such a manner as to permit 'easy application of the same to the card table without in any manner marring or revising the table construction.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a pencil holder for card tables which can be readily applied and as easily detached when the table is to be folded up and stored away.
Other objects and advantages will be observed in the reading of the following specification.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary perspective view of one corner portion of a card table, showing the novel pencil holder in place thereon.
Figure 2 represents an enlarged perspective view, showing the rear side portion of the pencil holder.
Figure 3 represents a vertical sectional View taken substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen in Figure l that numeral 5 generally refers to the table structure which includes the top 6 and the side boards 7. These side boards 7 are rabbeted at their upper edge portions to provide a seat for the edge portion of the table 6, thus leaving an upstanding bead 8 on the side board 7 which extends entirely around the perimeter of the table top.
In carrying out the present invention, the holder is constructed in its entirety of a sheet of preferably spring metal which is rst formed to provide the pencil tray or trough 9. The trough is provided along one longitudinal edge with a depending flange 10, as is clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. The intermediate portion of the plate slopes backwardly, as at 11, and is provided with a substantially horizontal portion 12 which is intended to engage under the lower side or edge of the side board 7, as shown in Figure 3, while f the depending flange 10 engages between the edge portion of the table top 6 and the aforementioned bead 8. As a matter of fact, this ange 10 is first engaged in this position and subsequently, the horizontal portion 12 is urged under the side boards 7, while the upwardly and downwardly curved lip 13 on the edge of the horizontal portion 12 serves as a detent and snaps up against the back portion of the side board '7. Thus the holder is retained firmly in position at any convenient place along the edge of the table and when it is desired that the same be removed, all that is necessary is that the person reach under the table and grasp the lip 13, and by pulling downwardly and outwardly, this lip can be disengaged from the side board 7 and subsequently the flange 10 removed by executing a vertical lift on the holder.
Obviously, the pencil 14, when once placed in the trough, cannot easily become displaced.
While the foregoing specication sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and mao terials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
What is claimed is:-
1. A pencil holder for card tables comprising a trough provided at one longitudinal edge portion with a depending ange and at its opposite edge portion with a depending side wall, said side wall being provided with a horizontal portion at its lower portion, and a spring detent on the said horizontal portion.
2. A pencil holder for card tables comprising a trough, a depending ange at one longitudinal edge portion of the trough to engage over the usual side board of a Card table, a depending wall at the opposite edge of the trough, and a spring clip member on the lower portion of the wall to engage under the side board of the table.
3. A pencil holder for card tables comprising a trough, a depending flange at one longitudinal edge portion of the trough to engage over the usual side board of a card table, a depending wall at the opposite edge of the trough, and a spring clip member on the lower portion of the wall to engage under the side board of the table, said detent consisting of an upwardly and downwardly curved lip extension on the said side wall.
