More particularly, the invention comprehends a pile point having detachable connections-to the casing and provided with disengaging means adapted to recover thepoint after the casing has been driven to the desired depth.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference is hadto the following description andaccompanying drawing, and to-theappended claims in which the various features-of the inventionare 1-5 more particularly pointedout,

In the drawing in whichrthe several reference characters represent corresponding parts throughout the several views, numeral 5 indicates a tubular pile casing having atits upper end a driving head 6 adapted to receive the usual hammer blows for downwardly forcing the casing into the earth, the force being transmitted to the bottom edge of the casing which engages the projecting ends of the driving lugs 7 mounted in the pile point indicated generally by 8.
The pile point comprises an upper tubular section or body part 9 formed with a conical, lower penetrating portion 10, the upper section being provided with transverse slots or passages 11 shaped to receive the driving lugs '7, the latter being provided with upwardly extending inner ledges 12 that engage the interior face of the tubular body part above the slots 11 and serve as stops to limit the outward projection of the lugs, the bottom face 13 of the latter being inclined inwardly and downwardly and arranged to bear against a correspondingly shaped seat formed on the bottom wall of the slots and adapted to receive the driving force exerted upon the pile casing. For securing the driving lugs '7 in projected position, a locking sleeve 14 is slidably mounted for lengthwise movement within the tubular portion 9 of the pile point, the sleeve being reduced at its lower end to form a shoulder that is adapted to bear upon the ledges 12 of the driving lugs 7, the reduced portion of the sleeve also serving to engage the inner faces of the driving lugs and thus lock the latter in projected position.
Atits'upper end the locking sleeve 14 is provided with a bridge-15, having a flexible connection 16 leading to the pile point and connecting the same to the sleeve, the bridge being also provided with a flexible hoist connection 17 leading upwardly through'the pile casing 5 and the head 6 to a suit.- able hoisting device, not shown, and'whereby the several partscomprising the pile point may be drawn upwardly through the pile casing and re..- moved therefrom after-the same has been. driven to the desired depth.
In the operation of removingthe pilepoint, the tension of the hoist connection 17 serves to raise the locking sleeve 14 within the pile point and release the driving lugs 7, allowing the latter to fall inwardly by'gravity within the conical section ofthe pile point and to be carried upwardly there.-

In assembling the several parts of the pile point, the jointly connected locking sleeve 14 is positioned-at the side of the pile point body as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and. the driving lugs 7 are inserted intheir respective slots from the in,- side of the point, the outward or projecting position of the lugs being limited by the upper ledges l2 and the inclined bottom faces 13 formed thereon, the inclination of the faces being disposed to cause the lugs when released to fall by gravity within the pile point as above described. To temporarily prevent the lugs from falling inwardly during assembly, the projecting portions thereof are provided with perforations 18 adapted to receive removable pins 19, and as thus held the flexible connection 16 is then folded within the locking sleeve 14 and the latter inserted within the body part 9 and disposed in engagement with the inner faces of the driving lugs to lock the same in projected position, after which the temporary pins 19 are removed from the prfi'jecting portions of the lugs, and the latter are then adapted to be engaged by the lower end of the pipe casing 5. As thus assembled the pile point is free to be connected to the flexible hoist connection and inserted into the lower end of the pipe casing and the latter disposed in well known manner in driv- Iii ing position. Also, for the disengagement of the pile point under adverse ground conditions, the complete delivery of the driving lugs 7 into the chamber of the point may be positively effected by the added force of one or more hammer blows slots formed in the walls of said body part and projecting therefrom, the projecting portions of said lugs being provided with perforations, and
the lugs being provided with means coacting with said body part to limit the movement of the lugs in said slots, stop pins temporarily disposed within said perforations and adapted to hold said lugs in projected position, and a locking sleeve slidable lengthwise within said body part and adapted to engage the inner faces of said driving lugs and lock the latter in projected position, whereby the stop pins may be removed, said sleeve having connection with the pile point whereby the retraction of the sleeve will withdraw the point subsequent to movement of the driving lugs from projected position. In a hollow pile point, transverse passages extending through the walls thereof, the lower faces of said passages being inclined downwardly and inwardly, driving lugs extending through said passages and projecting outwardly of said point, means on said lugs engaging the inner wall of the pile point for limiting the outward projection of said lugs, and retractible means within the pile point for holding the driving lugs against movement inwardly and downwardly on the faces of said passages, and means connectedto thepile point and operable to cause retractive movement thereof upon operatiton of said retractible means to release the driving lugs for inward movement. 3. In a pile point having a tubular upper sec-7 .tion and a conical lower section terminating in a hollow'piercing end, and transverse passages extending through the Walls of said upper section, the lower faces of said passages being inclined inwardly and downwardly, driving lugs extending through said' passages and having bearing faces slidably engaging the side walls of said passages, a sleeve within the pile point and engaging the lugs and locking the latter in projected position, and means for disengaging said sleeve and allowing said lugs to slide over the inclined lower faces of said passages and enter under gravity into the hollow lower section of said pile point, the sleeve having connection with the point for withdrawal of the latter.

In a pile point having hollow upper and lower sections, driving lugs transversely slidable in passages formed through the walls of said upper section and adapted to project outwardly therefrom, the passages having inclined walls adapted to guide the driving lugs downwardly and inwardly relatively to the pile point, retractible locking means disposed in the said upper secpluralityofdriving lugseach adapted to enter one of said slots, each lug being formed with an inclined face adapted to bear against a wall of the point, whereby pressure imposed upon the top of the lugtends to move it inwardly and downwardly, and retractible means within the pile point for resisting said movement of the lug, and a connection between said retractible means and the pile point for withdrawing the latter upon retraction of said means. 6. A hollow pile point formed with a plurality of slots through itsvwall, in combination with a plurality of; driving lugs each adapted to enter one of said slots, each lug being formed with an inclined face adapted to bear against a Wall of -the'p0int and formed with an upwardly extending ledge also adapted to bear, against the inner wall of the point, and retractible means within the point-for-temporarily holding the lug within the slot, and a connection between said retractible meansand the-point for withdrawal of the pile point.-' 1 I r WARREN L.
