SCIaims.
The present invention relates to welded manways for pressure vessels, and more particularly to the construction of the end of the manway for facilitating securing of a cover thereto.
The general object of the invention is to provide a simple and economic construction for manways.
More specific objects will appear from a consideration of the preferred embodiment of the o invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing and described herein.
Figure l of the drawing is a perspective view of the manway with the cover in place.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the side wall of the manway.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 33 of Fig. 2, showing a portion of the circumference of the manway.
Fig. 4 is a top elevation of a portion of the circumference of the manway.
As shown in Fig. 1, the side wall or neck 1 of the manway is cylindrical or tubular and is joined to the vessel wall 2 by welding.
The outer end of the tubular manway neck has a reeniorcing collar 3 having a flange 4 welded thereto as shown in Fig. 2. The collar and flange are preferably formed integral and are either rolled or cast.
Pairs of radially extending lugs 5 are cast integral with the collar 3 and flange 4, or, if the latter is 9. rolled structure, the lugs are welded thereto. The pairs of lugs 5 are spaced at predetermined intervals about the circumference of the collar and the respective lugs in each pair are spaced to receive the end of an eye-bolt 6.
A pin 7 passes through the lugs and the end of the eye-bolt to secure thelatter in pivotal relation to the lugs, there being an eye-bolt 6 and pin 7 for each pair of lugs 5.
A cover 8 is adapted to seat on the end of the manway, and has a plurality of radial slots 9 in its outer periphery. These slots are spaced about the circumference to correspond with the pairs of lugs 5 and to receive the bolts 6.
The outer ends of the bolts 6 are threaded to receive nuts 10 which secure the cover 8 to the end of the manway.
When it is desired to remove the cover 8, the nuts 10 need only be loosened on the bolts 6 and the latter pivoted radially outwardly from the manway, thereby releasing the cover. It is unnecessary to remove the nuts entirely from the bolts.
Where the vessel is for use in the chemical industries, the manway neck 1 is of special alloy construction to resist corrosion. A ring seat 11 c of special alloy is provided at the end of the 'manway having a circular packing groove 12 for making a seal with the cover 8. The seat 11 is constructed with an inside diameter the same as that of the manway neck and an outside diameter slightly in excess of that of the flange 4, as shown in Fig. 2.
In securing the collar 3, flange 4 and seat 11 to the manway neck 1, the parts are arranged to provide a welding groove having the end edge .of the manway neck 1 and the lower side of the seat 11 as the sides of the groove, and the inner edge of the flange 4 as the bottom of the groove.
Weld metal 13 is then deposited in the groove to weld all of the parts together. Additional weld metal 14 is preferably deposited at the lower end of the collar 3 as shown in Fig. 2 to weld the same to the manway neck, and weld metal 15 is deposited at the outer circumferential juncture of the seat 11 and flange 4 to secure the seat in position.
The face of the seat 11 is preferably machined true after the welding operation in order to insure a proper seal between it and the manway cover 8.
Various modifications may be made in accordance with the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. In a manway closure for pressure vessels, a manway neck constructed of corrosion resisting alloy metal, a metallic member extending circumferentially of the neck at the outer end, an alloy ring seat at the outer end of the neck and member, a weld joining said neck, member and seat at the inner circumference, a weld joining the lower end of said member to the outer circumference of said neck, a weld joining the seat and member at their outer peripheries, a cover for said manway adapted to fit on said seat to close the 95 manway, and means on said member for securing said cover in place.
2. In a manway closure for pressure vessels, a manway neck constructed of corrosion resisting alloy metal, a metallic member extending cir- 100 cumferentially of the neck at the outer end, an alloy ring seat at the outer end of the neck and member, a weld joining said neck, member and seat at the inner circumference, a weld joining the lower end of said member to the outer circum- 105 ference of said neck, a weld joining the seat and member at their outer peripheries, a cover for said manway adapted to flt on said seat to close the manway and having radial slots in its outer periphery, lugs extending radially outwardly from no said metallic member, and bolts pivoted to said lugs and disposed to pivot into the slots in the cover and to secure the cover in place.
3. In a manway closure for pressure vessels, 9. manway neck constructed of corrosion resisting alloy metal, a metallic member extending cireumterentially of the neck at the outer end, an alloy ring seat at the outer end of the neck and member, a weld joining said neck, member and seat at the inner circumference, a cover for said manway adaptedto fit on said seat to close the manway, and means on said member for secur ing said cover in place.

manway and having radial slots in its outer periphery, lugs extending radially outwardly from said metallic member, and bolts pivoted to said lugs and disposed to pivot into the slots in the cover and to secure the cover in place.
5. In a manway closure for pressure vessels, a metallic manway neck, a metalli' member extending circumferentially of the neck at the outer end, a metallic plate ring seat at the outer end of the neck and member, a weld Joining said neck, member and seat at the inner circumference, a plurality of spaced lugs extending radially outwardly from said member, a plurality of bolts pivoted tov said lugs, a cover for closing the end of the manway adapted to fit on said seat and having a plurality of radial slots in its outer periphery disposed to receive said bolts, and nuts on the ends or said'bolts for securing said cover to the manway.
