8 Claims.
This invention relates to an ornamental attachment for radiator caps. 1 Among the objects of this invention are the provision of means whereby a radiator cap ornamentmay be detachably secured to a radiator cap, whereby the ornament may be positioned in any direction with respect to the radiator, regardless of the rotated position of the cap, and whereby the position of the ornament with respect to the cap and/or radiator may be changed with facilityand the ornament be securely locked in any such desired position. Other objects of the invention consist in improved features of construction and operation which will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, in which Figjlshows an ornament secured to a radiator p;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view with part of the ornament broken away showing the base of the ornament and the securing lugs or jaws;
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the base with a part of the cover plate broken away; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the clamping lugs or jaws.
For the purpose of disclosing my invention I have chosen a radiator cap 6 of the general design shown in Fig. 3, which may be secured to the filling opening of the radiator by any suitable means such as a bayonet slot connection or a screw connection or the like. The cap disclosed is provided with a spherical top 7 and its rim portion is inclined inwardly and downwardly as indicated at 8 and may be serated, if desired.
The ornament 9 which may be of any preferred design may be secured to or made integral with a base 10 whose lower face near its periphery as at 11 is preferably of the same general shape as the upper surface 7 of the radiator cap and is provided with radial guide slots 12 in which slide clamping lugs or jaws 13 provided at their inner ends with cam lugs 14, preferably shaped as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and which are provided at their outer ends with downwardly extending 17 from the upper surface 7 of the cap. The plate 17 may be secured to the base 10 by screws as shown, the heads of which are held out of contact with the surface of the cap by the flange 18.
The lower face of the base inside of the surface 11 is provided with a circular recess 20 in which is housed a circular cam disk 21 provided with any desired number of gear teeth 22, whichcooperate with a pinion 23 on a shaft 24 extending upwardly through the base 10 and provided with a squared end for engagement by a tool by means of which the cam disk 21 may be rotated in either direction. The cam disk, pinion and shaft may be locked in adjusted position by means of a lock The cam disk 21 closely fits within the nut 25. recess 20 which holds it centered with its gear teeth in mesh with the pinion 23 and with its cam edges 28 in proper relation with respect to the center of the base 10 whereby all the securing lugs or jaws 13 will be drawn inwardly radially the same amount thereby centering the ornament correctly with respect to the radiator cap.
As indicated in Fig. 3, the cam disk 21 is preferably supported on the clamping lugs or jaws 13 providing for a construction which is readily assembled, and in which the parts may be quickly replaced if found necessary.
By means of the construction shown, the ornament may be secured to existing radiator caps of any design with slight modifications in the construction of the cover plate 17, as for example, increasing the height of the flange 18 if such is found necessary. Modifications may also be necessary of the construction of the outer ends of the lugs or jaws 13, to conform to the rim of the radiator cap to which the ornament is to be secured.
By making the ornament detachable and using a clamping means which permits of the ornament being secured in any rotative angular position with respect to the cap, I have provided a construction by means of which the ornament may be positioned in any direction with respect to the radiator, regardless of the rotative angular position that the cap assumes in its closed position on the filling opening of the radiator.
While the invention has been described with respect to the drawing which shows a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that many changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of this invention, and that it is not the intention that words imported into the claims from the description should be construed as limiting in any sense, but
that a full range of equivalents should be given to the claims as permitted by the prior art.
What I claim is:
1. A radiator ornament having a base provided with radially extending slots and a hollow interior, clamping lugs slidable in said slots and having means for engaging said cap, means within the hollow interior of said base cooperating with said lugs for forcing said lugs against said cap, and means accessible from the exterior for operating said last mentioned means.
2. A radiator ornament including a hollow base having a part conforming to the upper surface of a radiator cap, securing lugs slidably mounted in radially inclined slots in said base, means housed within said base for moving said lugs into engagement with said cap, and means accessible from the exterior for operating said means.
3. A radiator ornament including a hollow base adapted to be seated on the upper surface of a radiator cap, securing lugs slidably mounted in radial guide ways in said base, a cam plate housed within the hollow of said base and cooperating with said lugs to draw said lugs inwardly simultaneously, and means located ex teriorly of the base for operating said cam plate.
4:. A radiator ornament including a hollow base adapted to be seated on the upper surface of a radiator cap, securing lugs slidably mounted in radial guide ways in said base, a circular cam plate maintained in position by the side wall of the recess in said base and supported vertically by said lugs, and means located exteriorly of the base for operating said circular cam plate.
5. A radiator ornament including a base adapt ed to be seated on the upper surface of a radiator cap, said base being provided with a circular recess, securing lugs slidably mounted in radial guide ways in said base, a circular cam plate maintained in position by the circular side wall of the recess in said base and supported vertically by said lugs, gear teeth formed on said cam plate, and a pinion mounted in said base and cooperating with said gear teeth, said pinion being rotatable from the exterior of said base.

In an ornamental attachment for radiator caps, a base comprising two parts the upper of which is provided with a circular recess and radial guide ways opening toward the lower face thereof, and the other part of which is secured to said first part to close said guide Ways, clamping lugs slidable in said guide ways and held in position by said second mentioned part of the base, and a circular cam plate cooperating with said lugs and supported thereby, said cam plate being centered by the wall of said circular recess, and means accessible from the exterior of said base for rotating said cam plate.
7. A radiator cap attachment including a base having a seat portion conforming to at least a portion of the upper surface of a cap, and securing means mounted in said base and including rigid elements bodily movable in said base for cooperation with the exterior side wall of the cap for simultaneously drawing said base against said cap and for centering it thereon.
8. An ornamental attachment for radiator caps provided with a cylindrical exterior surface, securing lugs slidably mounted in said attachment .and having provision for frictionally engaging said surface, and exteriorly accessible means for operating said lugs.
