The particular fixture or head 15 illustrated in the drawing is provided with four equally spaced openings 19. Bosses 20 having flat vertical outer faces surround the outer ends of the openings 19. The head 15 is, of course, attached to the post 14 in a suitable manner (not shown), and may be adjusted vertically by means of screws 21. The ferruled base lip l1 of the globe 10 is received within the flange 16 of the head with substantial clearance.
The globe holding device or means of the present invention includes spaced posts or anchor pins 22 on the head 15, and a plurality of spring members or iiexible members 23 connected with the anchor pins 22, and adapted to grip and hold the globe 10. a
The anchor pins 22 are adapted to be applied Aor attached to a typical globe carrying fixture Vor support. In the particular application of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the anchor pins are attached to the head 15 and project upwardly from its iiange 16. It is a feature of the present invention that the openings 19, provided in the ange 16 for receiving the usual screws for clamping against the globe, may be utilized in attaching the anchor pins 22 to the head 15. AThe anchor pins 22 are provided with plate-like bases 24 adapted to seat against the outer ends of the bosses 20. Openings 25 are provided in the bases 24 of the anchor pins for passing screws 26 which maybe threaded into the openings 19 to attach the anchor pins to the flange 16. The openings 25 may be vertically elongated to allow for the vertical adjustment yof the anchor pins. The screws 26 for attaching the anchor pins 22 to the flange 16 are preferably comparatively short so that their inner ends are spaced a considerable distance outwardly from the ferrule 12 on the base lip of the globe. Theportions of the anchor4 pins 22 projecting upwardly from the flange 16 are provided at their upper ends with heads 27.` The inner'sides of the heads 2'7 opposing the globe 10 are cut away, or are of reduced width` for the purpose to be subsequently described. From the above," it will be seen that the anchor pins 22 may be easily and quickly attached to the typical or standard head fixture 15 at suitably spaced points without in any way altering or modifying the xture.
The flexible globe engaging members 23 are provided to connect with or cooperate with the anchor posts 22 and grip the ferruled base lip 11 of the globe 10 to effectively hold the globe in position. In the application of the invention illustrated in the drawing where there are four anchor pins 22, there are preferably four members 23, it being understood that the number of members 23 employed may be reduced if desired. The members 23 may be alike or identical in size and shape where the anchor pins 22 are equally or symmetrically spaced apart, as described above.
The globe holding members 23 may be formed of flexible rod or wire of the desired gauge, strength and flexibility. As initially formed, the members 23 are longitudinally curved, the arc or radius of curvature of the members 23 being considerably greater thanthe radius of the lip 11 of the globe. In the preferred form of the invention, the members 23 are of vsubstantial length to extend between and connect with two diametrically opposite anchor pins 22.
An outwardly rolled or outwardly projecting loop 30 is provided on one end of each member 23 for cooperating with an anchor pin 22, and a laterally or outwardly projecting hook 31 is provided on the other end of each member 23 for cooperating with an anchor pin 22. The eyes or loops 30 of the members 23 are adapted to receive or pass the projecting portions of the anchor pins 22 so that the members 23 may be swung or pivoted on the anchor pins when the members are moved to and from the operative holding positions in engagement with the globe 10. The eyes or loops 30 of the members 23 may be formed or bent around the anchor pins 22 at the place of manufacture, or prior to the assembling of the anchor pins on thehead l5, or, if desired or found practical, the loops 30 may be formed in the members 23 and engaged around the anchor pins 22 at the point of installation or when the anchor pins 22 are attached to the head l5. The laterally projecting hook portions or hooks 31 are provided to cooperate with the anchor pins 22 diametrically opposite the pins carrying the loops 30 of the respective members.
'I'he hooks 31 project laterally outward and somewhat rearwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing. In the preferred embodiment of the invention each hook 31 is suiciently long to project outwardly from the anchor pin 22 with which it is in engagement so that it may be readily engaged to permit the ilexing of the member 23 when the hook is moved into and out of engagement with the pin. The outer ends of the hooks 31 may be finished with loops 33. The globe engaging members 23 are proportioned so that they must be swung inwardly against the ferruler 12 or the globe and flexed inwardly before their hooks 31 can be engaged over the anchor pins 22. This flexure of the members 23 is maintained as long as their hooks 31 are in engagement with the anchor pins 22 so that the members 23 engage the ferrule 12 of the globe with eective holding or retaining pressure. The globe holding members 23 may be bowed downwardly between their ends to be received within the flange 16 in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing.
Y Each member 23 has its loop 30 carried by or connected with an anchor pin 22, and extends for substantially 180 degrees around the base lip 1l of the globe to a diametrically opposite anchor pin 22 where its hook 31 engages on the said opposite anchor pin. As there are four members 23, the ferruled base lip 11 of the globe is engaged by the members 23V throughout its entire circumference. The holding members 23 overlap one another in their engagement with the ferruled lip 1l at points or zones between the spaced anchor pins 22, while the medial or intermediate portion of each member 23, which portion exerts the greatest holding pressure, has holding or gripping engagement with the ferruled lip 11 at a point or zone inwardly of an anchor pin 22. The combined holding or inward gripping acticn of the multiplicity of members 23 effectively holds the globe 10 on the head 15, and at the same time permits limited movement or rocking of the i globe, which movement or rocking is, of course, resisted by the :flexible holding members 23. Due to the substantially uniformly distributed holding cooperation of the members 23 with the ferruled lip l1 and flexibility of the members 23, the globe 10 is not subjected to iracturing strains in the event that the post 1) is shaken or jarred.
.It is believed that the manner of assembling the anchor pins 22 and holding members 23 will be apparent from the foregoing detailed descrip- I tion. `The anchor pins 22 may be quickly attached to the flange 16 of the head 15 by the screws 26 threaded into the conventional or stand- `After the globe 10 has been arranged with the lower end ofits base flange ll seated on the washer 18, the holding members 23 may be swung into i engagement with the globe and retained in holding position by engaging their hooks 3l with the anchor pins 22. The reduced or narrow inner sides of the anchor pin heads 27 permit the members 23 to be readily passed downwardly between the heads and the globe l0. In order to hook or engage the hook 31 of a member 23 onto an anchor pin 22, it is necessary to bend or flex the member 23 inwardly to a considerable extent so that the member is maintained in this flexed condition and in effective gripping and holding cooperation with the ferruled lip 11 of the globe as long as the hook 31 remains in cooperation with the anchor pin. The hooks 31 are sufficiently long to i permit the easy connection and disconnection of the hook ends of the members 23 from the anchor pins. After the several holding members 23 have been assembled onto the base lip 11 of the globe with their hooks 31 in'engagement with the proper anchor pins 22, the globe l0 is securely but yieldingly retained in its proper l position on the head 15. The distributed yielding contact of the multiplicity of members 23 with the ferruled base 11 ofthe globe is such that the globe 10 is not liable to be fractured or broken in the event that the fixture or post is jarred or shaken. The globe holding device of the present invention is extremely inexpensive of manufacture, and is readily adaptable to the standard or typical globe holding fixtures of lamp posts, etc.
Having described only a typical form of my invention I do not wish to limit myself to the specic details set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any changes or variations that may appear to those skilled in the art or fall within the scope of the following claims.
` Having described my invention, I claim:
1. Means for holdinga globe on a support including spaced projections on the support, and an elongate flexible member connected with the projections to be longitudinally bowed and bear l inwardly against the globe under flexure.
2.` Means for holding a globe on a support in cluding spaced projections on the support, and a plurality "off members extending between and connected with the projections to bear against the globe under flexure, the members overlap-V ping one another to have engagement with the globe throughout its circumference.
3. In combination, a globe, a support on which the lower end of the globe may rest, and means for holding the globe on the support including anchor pins to be attached to the support to project therefrom, and a plurality of Vflexible elongate members/normally having a slight longitudinal curvature, each member being separately connected with spaced anchor pins to have its curvature increased and to yieldingly bear against the globe.
4. In combination, a globe, a support on whichV the lower end of the globe may rest, and means for holding the globe on the support including anchor pins to be attached to the support to project therefrom at points circumferentially spaced around the globe, flexible members extending between and connected with the anchor pins to encircle the globe and yieldingly grip the same, each member having an end independently swingable on an anchor pin, and hooks on the free ends of the members for releasably engaging anchor pins.
5. A device for holding a globe on a support including, anchor pins to be attached to the support to project therefrom, and a plurality of elongate ilexible members, each member having a loop on one end for receiving an anchor pin, and a hook on the other end for releasably engaging another anchor pin, the members being related to encircle the globe and yieldingly grip the same.
6. A device for holding a globe on a support including, anchor pins to be attached to the support to project therefrom, a plurality of individual elongate flexible members, means swingably connecting an end of each member with an anchor pin, andhooks on the other ends of the members for releasably engaging anchor pins to hold the members under flexure and in gripping engagement with the globe.
7. A device for holding a globe on a support including, anchor pins to be attached to the support to project therefrom, the anchor pins being spaced circumferentially of the globe, l0ngitudinally curved flexible members, a member being swingable on each anchor pin, and means for y releasably connecting the free ends of the members with anchor pins in positions where the members engage the globe and are maintained under a bending strain. j

In combination, a support for a globe, the support having an upstanding flange for surrounding the base portion of the globe, there being circumferentially spaced openings in the flange, and means for holding the globe on the support including anchor pins, connecting meiners cooperating with the openings to attach the anchor pins to the flange to project upwardly therefrom, and a flexible member connected with each anchor pin and having a hook for connecting with another anchor pin to hold the member flexed against the base portion of the globe, the flexible members being bowed downwardly to engage the base portion of the globe within the flange.
