(on; gee-s) My invention relates to the manufacture of wire and more especially wire known as .waterwire such as principally used intheproduction of bed-springs, and the object of my invention is to produce a wire of this kind havinga uniform 10' permitted to drop from the 'spool-basketi'nto a water tank. In another device the wireon its way from the wire-roll to the spool'passes through the cooling water on the counter current principle. Also, water has been admitted during the winding operation to the interior of the spoolbasket through large pipes. Or, water has been admitted to the interior 'of the spool-basket after the winding has been finished sofas to chill the wire bundle before itsremovalfrom the spoolbasket.
While in all these various devices the wire has been 'morelorles's cooled, there has been'considerablecomplaint, that the cooling doesnot proceed uniformly with the result that the duality ofthe finished wire is greatly affected. M
' To overcome this serious drawback, Ihave devised an apparatus, wherein the wireis veryuniformly cooled, so that a wire of very high quality isproduced. This object I attain indirecting againstthe wire bundle in the spoolbaske't' a large number of fine water-jets, the cooling effect of which is increased by the centrifugal action due to the rapid revolutions of the spool-'basketl In this manner, the cooling water 'is'c'ontinually' brought into contact with the wire at avery large number of places. Because of the effect of the centrifugal action referred to, a portion of the cooling water is forced outwards through the various convolutions of the'wire in the spool-basket -40, cooling also the latter as well as the surrounding wall, while the major portion of the cooling water, due to the same centrifugal action, is upwardly displaced along the outer wall of the spool-basket to enter a gutter in the cover of the spool-basket inwhich cover the flow of the cooling water is reversed so thatit flows back into the spool-basket, to again impart its cooling effect to the bundle of wire in the basket.
On the annexed drawing, on which by way of illustration, I have shown a preferred embodiment of the apparatus for carrying my invention into practice, the single figure shows the apparatus partly in centrallvertical section.
At 1 is shown the spool-basket secured to a rotatable vertical shaft 2 driven from any desired source of power. The space in which the wire shown at 3 is wound up, is formed by two walls,
toi'wit the inner wall 4 and the outer wall 5. In its center, the spool-basket is provided with a hollow space 6. Theinner wall'4 of the spool-basket is provided with numerous bores 7 forming spray-nozzles, while similar bores 8, but of a smaller cross-sectional area than the bores '7, are provided in the outer wall 5. The rotatable spool-basket 1 is enclosed in a stationary casing 9 carried by a standard 10; The casing is provided with an inclined bottom shown at 11, in which at 12 is provided a circular gap. i 1
At the top, the spool-basket 1 is closed by an annular cover 13 resting on the upper rim of casing 9 and provided with an improved gutter 14. At 15 is shown a supply nozzle for supplying water to the inner hollow space 6. As shown on the drawing, the spool-basket is secured to the upper end of the drive-shaft 2 by means of a hub shown at 16 provided with a central conical hub-cap 17.
The operation is as follows:
Whilethe spool-basket containing the woundup wire is being rapidly rotated, cooling water is admitted through the supply-nozzle 15 to the inner hollow space 6. The water striking the hub-cap 17, is spread in all directions. Because of the effect of centrifugal action, produced by the=rapidly revolving basket 1, the water enters the same through the numerous small bores '7 in the formof a spray penetrating between the various convolutions of the wire 3. A portion of the cooling' water passes outwardly through the smaller bores 8 in the outer wall of the basket andflowsdown in the space between said outer wall and the wall of casing 9 cooling also the latter and escaping through the circular gap 12, flowing down over the standard 10 which is thus likewise cooled by the cooling water. The major portion of the water, since the bores 8 are finer than the bores '7, because of the centrifugal action, is forced upwards as shown at 18 entering the inverted gutter 14 in the annular cover 13. The gutter is so shaped, that the flow of the water is thereby reversed, so that the water flows back into the spool-basket to again act as cooling water for the wire in the basket. In this manner, a very uniform cooling of the entire bundle apparatus, my invention is, of course, not limited to the particular construction shown, since various modifications may be made therein without any departure from the essence of the invention.
I claim: I l. A rotatable spool-basket for use in the.- manufacture of wire, having an outer wall and an inner wall spaced therefrom and constituting therewith a chamber adapted to receive the wire coils, said inner wall having a large number of" perforations acting as spray-nozzles, means for supplying a steady stream of water to the inner.

2. A spool-basket for use in the manufacture of wire having an outer wall and an inner wall spaced from said outer wall'and constituting therewith a chamber adapted to receive the wire coils, said inner wall having a large number of;

4. A rotatable spool-basket for use in the manufacture of Wire having an outer wall and an inner wall spaced from said outer wall and constituting therewith a chamber adapted toreceive the wire coils, said inner wall having a large number of perforations acting as spray-nozzles and said outer wallhaving alarge numberof fine bores, a casing enclosing the basket, the wall of said casing being slightly spaced from said outer wall of the basket, means for supplying a steady stream of cooling water to the inner central space of the basket, the bores in said outer wall permitting a portion of the water to escape into the space between said outer wall and the wall of said casing, and means for rapidly rotating the basket.
5. A rotatable spool-basket for use in the manufacture of wire having an outer wall and an inner wall spaced from said outer wall and constituting therewith a chamber adapted to receive the wire coils, said inner wall having a large number of perforations acting as spraynozzles and said outer wall having a large number of fine bores,a casing enclosing the basket, the wall of said casing being slightly spaced from said outer wall of the basket, means for supplying a steady stream of cooling water to the inner central space of the basket, the bores in said outer wall permitting a portion of the water to escape into the space between said outer wall and the wall of said casing, and means for rapidly rotating the basket, said casing having aninclined bottom acting as a drain for the escaping water.

A spool-basket for use in the manufacture of wirehaving an outer wall and an inner wall spaced therefrom and constituting therewith a chamber adapted to receive the wire-coils, said inner wall having a large number of perforations acting as spray-nozzles and said outer wall having alarge number of fine bores, a hub formed in the, center of the basket, a casing enclosing the basket, the wall of said casing being slightly spaced from said ,outer wall of the basket, a shaft extending through an opening in said casing and having securedv to it said hub, means for supplying a steady stream of cooling water to the inner central space of the basket, the bores in said outer wall permitting a portion of the water to escape into the space between the wall of said casing and said outer wall of the basket, and means for rapidly rotating said shaft.

A spool-basket for use in the manufacture of wire having an outer wall and an inner wall spaced therefrom and constituting therewith a chamber adapted to receive the Wire-coils, said inner wall having a large number of perforations acting as spray nozzles and said outer wall having a large number of fine bores, a hub formed in the center of the basket, a casing enclosing the basket, the wall of said casing being slightly spaced from said .outer wall of the basket, a shaft extending through an opening in said casing and having secured to it said hub, means for supplying a steady stream of cooling water to the inner central space of the basket, the bores in said outer wall permitting a portion of the water to escape into the space between the wall of said casing and said outer wall of the basket, and means for rapidly rotating said shaft, and a stationary lid for the basket supported by said casing'and formed with an inverted gutter for turning back the flow of the upwardly displaced cooling water and re-circulating the same.
