The plunger 34 contains a spring the bottom of which engages the bottom 38 of the cylindrical member 35, the spring 40 urging the plunger 34 upwardly.
Owing to the upward pressure of the spring 40 against the plunger 34 and the connection described between said plunger and the arm 28 attached to the cap 25, which connection may be considered a pin and slot connection, the cover 25 is urged firmly against the sifter cap 19, thus closing the sifter openings 20 therein. When it is desired to raise the cover 25 from the sifter cap 19 the user of the article depresses the plunger 34 by pressing downwardly upon a finger piece portion 41 thereof, thus raising the cover 25 to the position indicated in Figure 1. For the dispensing of powder from the article, it may be held with the axis of the nozzle 17 approximately horizontal, and the cover 25 opened and closed successively by actuating the finger piece portion 41, whereupon the tapping of the cover 25 upon the sifter cap 19 will cause a limited quantity of powder to be dispensed for each opening and closing of the cover 25. This feature of the device is very advantageous for in using these articles a limited quantity is desired with a minimum of effort, and too great a discharge of powder is usually to be avoided.
The depending ears 29 are formed with sharp shoulders 42 on the front portion thereof, and when it is desired to fill the casing 10 with powder the cover 25 may be raised in the manner described and the cover retained in that position without the necessity of holding downward the plunger 34, by placing the sifter cap 19 between the nozzle 17 and one of the-shoulders 42, as indicated in Figure 1, the bottom of the sifter cap '19 being towards the uprights 22 with the threaded portion of the sifter cap under the shoulder 42.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 6, the bottom wall 14 of the casing 10 has a hole 43 therein in which is secured a hollow cylindrical member 44 which is closed at the upper endby a wall 45 that is preferably integral therewith. This cylinder 44 constitutes a recess in the casing 10 for the reception of a toilet accessory. Preferably this accessory is a lipstick 46, which is shown in elevation in Figure 5. Referring now to Figures '3, 5 and 6, a disc 47 having a knurled periphery has attached to one face thereof an inner sleeve 48, the axis of which passes through the center of the disc 47. The sleeve 48 has a vertical slot 49 in it which, however, does not extend to the top of the sleeve, thus preserving the rigidity and formof the sleeve. concentrically located with respect to the sleeve 48 and surrounding it is a sleeve 50 which is secured in any suitable manner, as-by soldering, to an outer sleeve 51. A spiral slot 52 is formed in the sleeve 50; thus the sleeves 50 and 51 together constitute a cylinder having a spiral track therein. The sleeve 51 is mounted to rotate with respect to the disc 47 and the sleeve 48, and in order that these parts may be held together axially the sleeve 48 at the top thereof is spun to make an outwardly extending ridge 54 which forms a bearing or seat for'the upper end 55 of the sleeve 51 which is spun over at the top,

The entire lipstick 46 fits inthe recess formed by the cylinder 44, and the disc 47 fits in a recess 60 in the bottom wall 14 of the casing 10, the knurled portion being engageable at the edges of the casing, as shown in Figure 1, so that the lipstick may readily be removed from the easmg.
When it is desired to use the lipstick, the article may be held in inverted position (considering, for the purpose of description, that the article is shown in normal position in Figures 1 and 3) in order to remove the lipstick 46, without the loss of any powder from the receptacle 10. Nevertheless, powder is instantly available at all times owing to the fact that depression of the finger piece portion 41 uncovers the sifter openings. In the case of boxes provided with a lid merely the extraction of exactly the right amount of powder is always a problem and involves the scraping or absorption of the powder, while the sifting of any powdered material through holes by inversion or shaking may result in delivering any quantity of the material from none at all to the entire amount in the container, because of stickiness of the material due to humidity or other causes.

By the use of the article of the invention, in accordance with certain features thereof, powder may be dispensed in practically measured quantities by using the capor cover 25 as a tapping instrumentality. When a very minute quantity of powder is desired the article may be held in normal vertical position, in which case a rapid actuation of the plunger 34 not only loosens the powder, but also causes the cap or cover 25 to 1 create sufficient suction to raise thepowder out of the casing 10. For obtaining deliveryof greater amounts of powder, the article maybe inclined in various angular positions. The entire device is convenient to use and may include the vari- 31: ous features and supplies in small compass. Furthermore the general resemblance which the article has to a lighter renders it attractive. to feminine users of articles of this class.

As various possible embodiments may be made 430 of the above invention and as many changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is tobe understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a receptacle for powder having an opening, a sifter cap covering said opening, a hinged cap or cover shaped to seal the openings in said sifter cap by direct contact with the top of said sifter cap and a finger piece which when depressed raises said cap or cover. In a device of the class described, in combination, a receptacle, a movable cover or cap to said receptacle, a sifter top, spring means urging said cover or cap into closing position, and portions associated with said cover or cap adapt- 111-50 ed to be engaged by said sifter to hold the cove or cap open.
3. In a device of the class described, in combination, a receptacle for powder, a hinged cap or cover covering an opening in said receptacle, a spring pressed plunger mounted on said container for downward movement thereon, and a connection between said hinged cap and said plunger.
4. In a device of the class described, in combination, a receptacle having a top and bottom portion, there being an opening near one edge of the top portion, a cap or cover to said opening hinged on the top of said receptacle, spring means tending to close said cap or cover, and additional finger piece operating means located above said top portion on the other side of said hinge from said opening.
5. In a device of the class described, in combination, a receptacle for powder having an opening, a cylindrical nozzle around said opening, a cap or cover for said opening, a pivotally mounted member holding said cap or cover, a shoulder on said pivotally mounted member and a sitter top adapted to fit between said nozzle and said-shoulder to hold said cap or cover open.
6. In a device of the class described, in combination, a generally parallelopipedal casing having a fiat top, a nozzle for powder at one end of said top, a depressible finger piece at the other end of said top, hinge means between said nozzle and said finger piece, a cap or cover pivoted on said hinge means and connected to said depressible finger piece whereby movement downwardly of the latter raises the cover or cap which otherwise closes the nozzle, the finger piece and the cap or cover being separate parts, and an operating connection between the finger piece and the cap or cover.
7. In a device of the class described, in combination, a receptacle for powder having an opening on one end thereof, means covering said opening adapted to restrict the amount of powder to be dispensed, and tapping means mounted on the outside of said receptacle and adapted to tap the aforesaid means on the outside for the dispensing of powder in limited and controlled quantities.

In a device of the class described, a casing comprising a receptacle for powder and having an opening on the top thereof,. hinge means mounted on said casing, a cap or cover for said opening pivoted on said hinge means, a finger piece, spring means urging said finger piece in one direction, the finger piece and the cap or cover being separate parts, and an operating connection between the finger piece and the cap 01' cover whereby in one position of the finger piece the cap or cover closes the opening and in another position of the finger piece the cap or cover is removed from the opening.
