'I'his invention relates especially to the manu-V facture of wrapped sweets or other articles made from thermo-plastic material.
In the manufacture of sweets the paste coming 5 from a rolling mill is cut into pieces, which are each wrapped by a machine which receives the 4pieces in succession.
The main object of the present invention is to provide between the device for cutting the paste l and the wrapping mechanism, a cooling device which, while beingof relatively small dimensions, effectively cools the articles to a definite consistency, so as to render them suitable for eiiicient wrapping Without any deformation. l According to the present invention, the cooling device includes in combination a cylindrical chamber including semi-cylindrical shells mounted for lateral displacement on end frame members supporting the chamber, the shells being in spaced relation at one end of one diameter of the chamber, a drum located in the chamber having on its periphery a plurality of longitudinal ribs intersected by ribs on the chamber and mounted for rotation on the end frames, means for moving the drum step by step and an intermittently operated conveyor moving in the space between the shells at the end of one diameter passing over the longitudinal channels between the ribs on the drum to 80 deposit articles therein, the arrangement being such that the conveyor is stationary when the drum is moving and vice versa.
Preferably, two semi-cylindrical shells are connected in abutting relation at the bottom of the end frames and in spaced relation at thetop, the `end frames including radial arms carrying guides for pins on the shells and means for bolting the shells together.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, one method of construction according to the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing a cooling device according to the invention applied to a machine of the type above described, the parts of the machine not relating to the invention being shown in chain lines;
Fig. 2 is a top plan of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is another section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, the conveyor chain being omitted;
Fig. 5 shows a plan of the cooling drum with its casing in section in such a manner as to enable the cells for the articles to be seen, and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on a smaller scale o! a modiilcation of Fig. 4.
The machine is provided with a device, indicated at l, for supplying the paste, a cutting device and a distributor for the cut pieces, indicated at 2, and an intermittently moving conveyor chain 3 feeding the cooling device which 60 forms the subject of the invention and from which the cooled pieces are brought to the wrapping device, indicated at 4. The devices cooperating with the cooling device are not shown in detail as they do not form part of the present 66 invention.
vThe cooling device, according to the present invention, includes a rotary cooling drum 6 located in a cylindrical chamber formed of semicylindrical shells 12, 13. These two semi-cylin- 'l0l drcal shells, which may be laterally displaced, are connected in abutting relation at the bottom of end frames 25 and 26 by a bolt passing through aperturedlugs 20, 20 and 21, 21 on each shell 12, 13, respectively, and in spaced relation at the top so as to leave a passage 22 in which the conveyor chain 3 moves, the shells being held in spaced relation by means of pins passing through apertured lugs 18, 18 and 19, 19' on the shells 12, 13, respectively, into bars 16, 17 connecting 80 the end frames 25 and 26.
On the end frames 12, 13 are provided radial arms 14, 14' and 15, 15', respectively, whose ends are formed to provide guides for pins 27, 27' and 28, 28' carried on the shells 12 and 13. 85.
The cooling drum 6 is mounted on a hollow shaft 7 (Fig. 3) concentric with the shaft 8 which isV connected to the driving mechanism of the machine and supported in the end frames 25, 26. 'I'he drum 6 is provided on its periphery with a 90 plurality of rows of cells 9 which are defined by walls 9' (Fig. 5) and of which the shape corresponds with that of the articles cut at 2. These rows'of cells are provided over the whole circumference of the drum and are separated by spaces 10 in which are located annular ribs 11 provided on the inner face of the two semi-cylindrical shells 12, 13. These two parts are detachably mounted on suitable supports 14, 14', 15, 15',
16, 16', 17, secured to the frame of the machine 100 and are secured to the said frame at 18, 18', 19,
19', 20, 20', 21, 21', one of these attachments21,
21', being shown in Fig. 3. The parts 12 and 13 are constructed so that they leave at the'top a passage 22, in which the conveyor chain 3 moves 105 freely.
In the modification represented in Fig. 6, the exterior casing is formed of a series of semi-circular elements 12, 13 placed side by side, but spaced by a small interval. These elements are .11o

'I'hese elements 12, 13 comprise, as in the pre- 6 ceding case, ribs 11 cooperating with the cells 9 of the drum. A
The rotary drum with cells formed in one or the other of the casings above described is moved intermittently by a mechanism which is not part of the present invention.
The rotary cooling drum 6 is driven intermittently and alternately with the conveyor 3, through the medium of a Geneva stop mechanism driven in timed relation with the mechanism causing the intermittent movement of the conveyor 3.
There will now be described the operation of lling the cells 9 of the cooling drum and the movement of the articles up to the wrapping device.
As will be seen clearly in Figs. 1, 2 and 5, the.
conveyor chain 3 moves transversely of the rotary drum 6 and is guided before its entrance into the drum and when passing across the drum the 4'conveyor is guided by the aligned walls 9.' of a transverse row of cells as will be clearly seen in Fig. 5.
In order to permit of relative movement in two perpendicular planes between the conveyor chain 3 and the drum 6, the Walls 24 of the cells of the chain 3 are always located in the spaces 10 when the conveyor is stopped during its intermittent movements, these walls 24 closing the cells 9 at the sides.
The drum being empty and at rest when the conveyor chain has brought an article into a cell of the first row of the drum, it stops and the cooling drum then rotates through a space corresponding to a cell. 'I'he conveyor chain again ioperates and deposits another article into the next cell of the first row, whereupon the drum rotates to bring the following cell into line with the conveyor so as to receive the next article. This alternate intermittent movement of the drum and conveyor continues until when the drum has made a complete revolution the first row of cells has been filled, so that upon the next movement of the conveyor the first article, which is again in line with the conveyor, is transferred Ato the second row of cells on the cooling drum.
Thus, as the conveyor chain continues its intermittent movement alternately with the intermittent rotation of the drum 6, each row of cells is filled in turn until all the cells are filled. When this occurs, the conveyor chain on continuing to feed the drum, causes the cooled articles to leave successively on the opposite side of the drum.
'I'he articles are passed through the passages 23 to a nipping or other distributor, by which they `are partly wrapped and fed to a suitable wrapping device. These devices do not form part of the invention.
I claim as my invention:-
1. A cooling device comprising in combination a cylindrical chamber including semicylindrical shells mounted for lateral displacement on end frame members supporting the chamber, the shells being in spaced relation yat one end of one diameter of the chamber, a Idrum located in the chamber having on its periphery a plurality of longitudinal rib's intersected by ribs on the interior of the chamber, said drum being mounted for rotation on the end frames, means for moving the drum step by step and an intermittently operated conveyor moving in the space between the shells at the end of one diameter passing over 'the longitudinal channels between the ribs on the drum to deposit articles therein, the arrangement being such that the conveyor is stationary when the drum is moving and viceversa.
2. A cooling device according to claim 1, comprising two semi-cylindrical shells connected in abutting relation at the bottom of the end frames and in spaced relation at the top, the end frames including radial arms carrying guides for pins on the shells and means for bolting the shells together substantially as described.
3. A cooling device comprising a rotary drum having a plurality of circumferentially and axially spaced rows of axially extending ribs formed on the cylindrical surface thereof, a cylindrical shell surrounding thel drum, said shell being formed of a, plurality of axially spaced apart sections, each of which consists of two semi-cylindrical parts secured together with a space provided between the abutting portions providing openings for the introduction of articles to be cooled therein, and each of said sections also having a circumferential rib on the interior surface thereof adapted to fit between the axially spaced rows of ribs on the exterior surface of the drum, all of said ribs cooperating to provide compartments between the drum and shell.
4. A cooling device comprising a rotary. drum having a plurality of circumferentially and axially spaced rows of axially extending ribs formed on the cylindrical sinface thereof, a cylindrical shell surrounding the drum, said shell being formed of a plurality of axially spaced apart sections, each of which consists of two semi-cylindrical parts secured together with a space provided between the abutting portions providing openings for the introduction of articles to be cooled therein, and
each of said sections also having a circumferential rib on the interior surface thereof adapted to fit between the axially spaced rows of ribs on the exterior surface of the drum, all of said ribs cooperating to provide compartments between the drum and shell, means for depositing articles to be cooled in said compartments, -and means for alternately and intermittently moving the drum and depositing means.
