Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GFEICE.
JAMES GRANT, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
HORSE-POWER MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,769, dated vMarch 30, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES GRANT, of Rochester', in the' county of Monroe and State of New York, have` invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Powers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a plan, or top view. Fig. 2, is a transverse section.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the cap A of vhorse-powers, with an open center, over the pinion B, and making the center bearing, or aXis of the cap, in the bridge-piece c which may be adjustable or fixed; and of making a double-length, or reversible pinion B, and a female gear in the hub of the bevel Wheel C to receive the lower end of the said pinion, thus clutching it to the bevel-wheel, whereby motion is transmitted from the planetary wheels D, through pinion B to said bevel wheel C. I also lengthen the center-pin E, at the lower end and give it two bearings Z9 and d.
I construct my powers similar to the common planetary power, but instead of making the cap A, with a tight center, I make it entirely open, which gives the operator full opportunityto watch the condition of the pinion B, and the want of such opportunity has been a serious objection to the planetary powers constructed on the old plan. The aXis of the cap A is made in the ridge-piece a, which has two or more arms, each of which has an ear c to receive a screw or bolt s passing through the elevated portion of the cap A, and when the teeth of the pinion B become worn on the upper end so as to be unsafe, it may be reversed by removing the bolts s from the bridge c, and
the pin Vz' from the center-pin E when the bridge may be removed and the pinion reversed without disarranging any other part of the machinery, whereas, in the old construction it was necessary to remove the traverse wheels f, the pin z' and then lift off the whole of the cap A with the planetary wheels D, before access could be had to the pinion B. I furnish double support to the center-pin E by running it down through the plate g. The ring L I construct with hollow studs j at the intermediate points between the wheels D, and the bolts n are screwed into the top of them. There is a flange m for the hub of the planet wheels to set in, which form oil cups. The rim of the bevel wheel C, is always more or less warped, I therefore make them to lit loosely on the pinion B, and let the hub rest on the collar G, so that however imperfect they are, the traverse wheel I will keep themin mesh with the pinion H, and without producing any strain upon said wheels C.
What I claim as my invention, is,
Making iron horse-powers with an open center to the caps A, and an adjustable, or a fixed bridge-piece a, and making a doublelength or reversible pinion B, as, and for the purposes specified.
