Electric Battery.

Patented Ma-rch 30, 1858 H l I/Hlll!!! Fay ,a
N. PETERS, Phatn-Lmnogrzpnnr, wanhingtnn. u. z:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE DOYLE, OF OTTAWA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED DEVICE FOR PREVENTING CORROSION 0F THE BINDING-SCREWSlN GALVANIC BATTERIES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 19,759, dated March 30, 1858.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE DOYLE, of Ottawa, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Galvanic Batteries for Telegraphs and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation ot' a battery with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan of onejar of the battery.
.Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in both figures.
This invention consists in a novel and superior method of making the connections whereby local action in and between the jars and the corrosion of the binding-screws are effectually prevented.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de-- scribe its construction and operation.
A A are the jars, of glass or glazed or enameled earthen ware.
B B are covers, of similar material to the jars, or of hard gatta-percha or other insulating substance, fitted over the mouths of the jars. Each cover is provided with two holes, c c, to receive the Shanks of the binding-screw sockets. C C are the sockets of the bindingscrews, and D D are the binding-screws. E E are the screw-clamps for the zinc and platina plates F and G. The Shanks b I) or" the binding-screw sockets are screwed onltheir eXterior and screw into the clamps E E, thus holding the said clamps firmly against the inside of the cover.
c c are washers, of india-rubber, leather, or
other sufficiently soft but durable material, in-
terposed between the clamps E'E and the covers B B, serving as packing to close the holes a a efectually.
The covers B B serve as effective insulators between the zinc and platina plates of each jar, and the washers o c eifectually protect the binding-screw clamps from the acid solution, and thus local action and corrosion 0f the binding-screws, it is obvious, must bev ett'ectually prevented.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Making the connections of the battery by tting the jars with covers of glass, glazed or enameled earthenware, gutta-percha,`or other insulating substance, With holes in them to receive the shanks of the binding-screw sock-v ets, and screwing the said sockets through the said holes into the clamps for the plates, with interposed washers of india rubber,
y leather, or similar protecting material, all substantially as herein described.
GEORGE DOYLE. Witnesses:
THos. OR'roN, E. O. BRADFORD.
