UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. REED, OF GBEENSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WEST. GUFFY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROOFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,564, dated November 27, 1877; application filed October 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. REED, of Greensburg, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Roof, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical transverse section of my improved roof. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line :0 w in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
The object of my invention is to provide an easily and cheaply constructed sheet metal roof, having a gutter attached to it and formin g a part of the roof.
In the drawing, A is a roof, prepared in the usual way for receiving sheet-metal roofing and B is a sheet of metal, corrugated longitudinally, and having on one of its edges a plain lip, a, turned up at right angles, and upon the other edge alip turned up at right angles and returned upon itself, forming a look, I), for receiving the lip a of the adjacent sheet.
The lip a and lock 1), when put together on a roof, are fastened by means of rivets 0.
At the ends of the sheets longitudinal slits are cut for a short distance at the edges of the sheets, and the ends of the sheets are locked together upon the roof. Anchor-pieces d are same manner as the sheets B are connected' together. The lower edge of the sheet from which the gutter is formed is bent down over the lower edges of the board roof and nailed.
It will be seen that the gutter is thus attached to the roof without nails passing through the water-way, and that the body of the roof is secured by means of anchor-pieces d, avoiding the necessity of driving nails through the sheets of metal.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent'- The gutter 0, formed by making in a sheet of metal the fold e, as herein shown and described.
' SAMUEL H. REED.
