This invention relates to a match package and particularly to its combination with additional material which may serve for advertising, display or other purposes.

6 Objects of the invention include the provision of a match package of a conventional form including a cardboard or other member forming a back and cover for a match assembly, preferably of the paper type and secured thereto, the back and cover further serving as an enclosure for a plurality of sheets of advertising, display or other matter; the provision of a common enclosure for an assemblage of matches and a plurality of sheets of advertising or other material; the provision of a plurality of sheets of'information imparting material in a match package so arranged as to be normally maintained in position against the back of the package by the match assembly; the provision of a match package of the paper type-having a plurality of sheets of information imparting material swingably associated therewith and normally maintained in closed or compact form against the back of the match package by the match assembly; the provision of a match package of the paper type and a strip of pleated sheet material attached to the package and normally maintained in pleated condition against the back of the package by the. match assembly contained therein; the provision of a match package and pleated sheet as above described in which the pleated sheet is normally confined within the marginal area of the package and is provided with a tab projecting beyond the margin of the package whereby to permit the sheet to be readily unpleated; the provision of a match package including aplurality of sheets of information imparting material foldably associated therewith and normally maintained in 40 folded position against the back of the package by the assembly of matches therein, the sheets when partially expanded or unfolded serving as a stop for maintaining the general plane of the match assembly in angular relation with respect to the general plane of the back of the package whereby to render the match assembly more accessible; and the provision of a novelty consisting of a plurality of foldable sheets of information imparting material associated with a package of matches serving to form an enclosure therefor as well as providing associated means for illuminating the sheets at night when required.

The above being among the objects of the '5 present invention, the same consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, and then claimed, having the above and other objects in view.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the package with the cover openedup, the matches broken off near their base and the sheets of information imparting material in more fully opened position.

Referring to the drawing, there is shown in the figures a match package of conventional type including an enclosure usually formed from pasteboard or like material to provide a back or back portion 10, a short end flap 12 and a cover or cover member or element 14. The flap 12 is reversely bent with respect to the back 10 to provide a channel 16 which receives one end of a match assembly indicated generally as at 18. While any suitable type of match assembly may be employed, the particular one shown for the purpose of illustration is of that conventional type commonly known as paper matches, the bottom ends of which are attached together in a well known manner and secured within the channel 16 by means of suitable staples 20 which ex- 'tend through both the flap 12, back 10 and match assembly. Each match, of course, includes a stem 22 and a head 24 and where the matches are of the safety type the exterior of the flap 12 is provided with a suitable coating 26 in accordance with well known practice for the purpose of striking the head 24 of the matches thereon. As is also conventional practice, the cover 14 is adapted to be bent over the match assembly 18 and its free end edge tucked beneath the flap 12 as indicated in Fig. 1 in order to maintain the package in closed position.

In accordance with the present invention, a plurality of sheets of information imparting material are attached to the inside of the back 10 and, while these sheets may take various forms and be attached to the back in various manners, in the particular case shown by way of illustration these sheets are formed from an elongated strip of material, such as paper, indicated generally as at 28 which is folded along lines as at 30 so as to enable it to be folded back and forth upon itself and thereby to provide a plurality of separate sheets 32 upon which the desired information or disclosure may be placed. The strip 28 is preferably folded so that each individual sheet 32 is of less area than the area of the back 10 and the free edge of one of the end sheets 32 is preferably glued or otherwise secured adjacent an inner margin of the back 10, preferably with the strip 28 extending transversely to the length of the match stems 22, as shown, and in such position that when the strip 28 is folded all of the sheets are located within the marginal confines of the back 10. It will be observed that when the sheets,32 constituting the strip 28 are all in folded position and the package is in normally closed position, as indicated in Fig. 1, the sheets are maintained in pressed or folded position against the inner surface of the back 10 by the match assembly 18 which thus serves the purpose of a clamp to hold the sheets together.

It will, of course, be apparent that after the sheets 32 have been unfolded they will not normally tend, in and of themselves, to maintain themselves in fully closed position when again folded back on themselves and, accordingly, some means must be provided for holding them in closed position, and such function is served by the match assembly 18 in the present case. It will also be apparent that if the closed package, as illustrated in Fig. 1, is manipulated so as to open the cover 14 and then the match assembly 18 together with the flap 12 and the cooperating edge portion of the back 10-is bent upwardly to approximately vertical relation with respect to the plane of the back 10,-as illustrated in Fig. 2, the sheets 32 will separate from each other as illustrated in Fig. 2 under their own resiliency, and if at this point the tension on the match assembly 18 and cover 14 is relieved they will be prevented from returning to their normal position by means of the extended sheets 32 which thus serve the purpose of a stop for preventing return of the match assembly and cover to their normal closed position. This enables the match package to be placed back down upon a table or other 'flat surface with the matches pointing upwardly in a position favorable to easy and convenient grasping of a match and detachment thereof from the match assembly.

Where the sheets 32 are of extremely flexible character it may be desirable to form on the free edge of that sheet 32 at the end of the strip 28 opposite to the end secured to the back 10, a tab such as 34 which, when the package and sheets 32 are in closed position as indicated in Fig. 1, will project beyond the margin of the back 10 so as to permit it to be manually grasped and pulled and thereby unfold the sheets 32 without the. necessity of opening the cover 14 of the package.

It may be noted that, aside from the utilitarian features of providing a single covering for both a match assembly and one or more sheets of information imparting material, and of providing a stop for maintaining the match assembly and cover in extended position, the device has value from the novelty standpoint in that it provides means associated with the information imparting material whereby a convenient means is provided for illuminating the information material at night.

Formal changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described without departing from the spirit or substance of the broad invention, the scope of which is commensurate with the appended claims.

We claim:

1. In combination, a strip of material forming a back portion, a reversely bent flap at one end thereof and a cover member bendably associated with the other end thereof, a match assembly received and secured at one end between said flap and back portion, said cover member being bendable over said match assembly and its free end margin being removably receivable under said flap to maintain said cover member in closed position, a pleated sheet of material having one edge thereof secured to said back portion and normally maintained in folded position against said back by said match assembly, said pleated sheet when folded being disposed substantially within the outer edges of said back portion, and a tab on the opposite end of said pleated sheet normally projecting beyond the side edges of said back portion.

2. In combination, a stripof material forming a back portion, a reversely bent flap at one end thereof and a cover member bendably associated with the other end thereof, a match assembly received and secured at one end between said flap and back portion, said cover member being bendable over said match assembly and its free end margin being removably receivable under said flap to maintain said cover member in closed position, a pleated sheet of material having one edge thereof secured to said back portion and normally maintained in folded position against said back by said match assembly, said pleated sheet when folded being disposed substantially within the outer edges of said back portion, and a tab on the opposite end of said pleated sheet normally projecting beyond the side edges of said back portion, said pleated sheet being formed of material of such yieldability as to permit it to be extended to unfolded position by pulling said tab while said cover member is engaged under said flap.
