Description
Sept. 25; 1934. R. E. RUTLEDGE PACKING BOX OR CARTON Filed Dec. 19, 11952 INVENTOR Patented Sept. 25, 1934 NITED STATE PACKING BOX OR CARTON Robert E. Rutledge, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo,
Mich.
Application December 1 3 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a packing apparatus or container for fruits, vegetables, baked goods and other products by which the contents are well protected and at the same time exposed for inspection.
Second, to provide a packing box or container having these advantages which is well adapted for packing operations including a facing when fruits or vegetables are packed or permitting the arrangement of the packed goods to effectively expose the desired portions thereof.
Third, to provide a box or package having these advantages which, while made of comparatively light stock, is strong and secure when set up and effectively protects the contents.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved box or container partially broken away and sectioned i to show structural details thereof.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a packing apparatus illustrating the method of packing, no attempt being made to illustrate contents.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view in the flat of j the top or inner member of the package or container.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the bottom member in the fiat.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the several parts of the box in disassembled relation, showing, however, their relation in assembly.
My improved box or container comprises an open-ended band-like or endless outer wall memher 1 rectangular in horizontal section and downj wardly tapered. The inner or top member 2 has a window opening 3 provided with a closure pane or panel 4 of transparent material such as Cellophane. This member 2 is provided with downwardly tapered side wall flaps 5 on its edges, these flaps being of a taper corresponding to the taper of the outer wall member 1. The third or bottom member 6 is provided with downwardly tapered intermediate side wall flaps 7. These side wall flaps 7 are of such dimensions as to fit within the walls of the outer member 1, with the end 9, 1932, Serial No. 647,845
To facilitate packing my improved box or container I provide a holder consisting of four side wall supports 9 pivoted at 10 and adapted to support the side walls 5 of the top when it is arranged in an inverted position upon the supporting plate 11 carried by the inwardly projecting arms 12 on the walls 9. The plate is arranged on these inwardly projecting arms and the top inverted thereon and pushed downwardly, which swings the walls 5 to their upright position.
The contents are then placed within the top in suitable facing relation to the window, and when filled the bottom 6 is placed in position with its intermediate side wall flaps in overlap- 'ping relation to the supporting wings 9 of the packing device. The outer band or wall memher 1 is then placed over the side wall flaps of the bottom member and the package lifted off the packing device, or the packing device inverted and its wings withdrawn from the package.
This facilitates the packing of the containers with their contents arranged in the desired relation. The package is highly desirable for fruits and vegetables, baked goods, and various other products. It has the advantage of being strong and durable, easily packed, and economical.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A packing box or container comprising an open-ended downwardly tapered continuous outer wall member, a bottom having downwardly tapered side walls on its edges fitting within said outer wall member and in supporting engagement at their ends with the walls of the outer wall member, and a top having downwardly tapered independent inner side walls fitting within and in supporting engagement with the side walls of said bottom.
2. A packing box or container comprising a top having downwardly tapered independent inner side wall flaps on the edges thereof, a bottom open-ended downwardly tapered endless outer wall memberg an inner member comprising atop having a window opening therein and downwardly tapered independent inner side walls, and a bottom having downwardly tapered intermediate side walls on its edges interposed between said inner side walls and the walls of the outer memher and in supporting engagement with the walls of the outer member. i
ROBERT E. RUTLEDGE.
