It is to be understood that in actual practice the openings 4 over which molds 5 are not mounted may be provided with molds of existing fixed jaw form so that with the mold wheel 1 provided with two conventional molds and two molds embodying the present invention, the type casting or composing machine is adapted to produce selectively different types of printing slugs. Since thefixed jaw form of mold is old and well known in the art I have not shown these molds in detail but have indicated the same generally by the reference character 10 in Figure l. The fixed jaw mold also has openings corresponding with the openings 9 for accommodating the usual mold disc aligning or locking studs. 1

It is to be understood that the molds 5 may be,;if1desired, attached to the mold wheel 1 in thesame manner as indicated for the conventional molds 10.
The cap member or outer mold part '7 of the mold 5 is movably mounted with respect to the body part 6. The cap and body parts of the mold carry opposed, casting jaws 14 and 15 which form the opposite sides of the casting cavity. a The faces of these jaws are suitably grooved and formed {to cast a printing slug with the grooves therein forming retention means on the head of the slug for securing it. in atype holder or carrier such as is employed in multigraph machines and the like, and with a weakened portion connecting the head of the slug to the foot or base portion, by virtue of which construction the base portion is separable from the printing head.

The upper mold member carrying the jaw 14 is slidable with respect to the mold body 6 to carry the jaw 14 also toward and away from the casting cavity .20. For the purpose of movingthe upper mold member toward and awayfrom the casting cavity this member carries guide arms 23 and 24, one at each of its opposite ends, and these arms 23 and 24 have heads 26 and 27, by means of which the arms are connected to the upper mold part or cap member '7 as by means of dowel pins 29 and screws 30. As best shown in Figure 3, the guide arms 23 and 24 are offset forwardly and are received within grooves or guideways 32 and 33, respectively, formed in the opposite ends of the mold body 6.
One end of the mold body is notched to receive a clip 35 secured therein by a screw 36 and which cooperates with an offset 38 in the inner end of the arm 24 to guide the latter in its movement relative to the mold body 6. The opposite end of the mold body 6 carries a similar clip 39 which cooperates with the recess 40 in the inner end of the arm 23 for the same purpose.
The rearward sides of the inner ends of the guide arms 23 and 24 are notched at 42 and 43, respectively When the cap member Tisassembled in proper position on the mold body the notches 42 and' 43 are disposed at the opposite ends of a groove or channel 44 formed in the rearward surface of the mold body 6 adjacent the lower end of the mold body and parallel with respect to the casting cavity 20.
Disposed within the groove or channel 44 are I a pair of jaw opening and locking members 45 and, 46 and an interposed rod 47 which, upon movement of the member 45 to the right as viewed in Figure 2, imparts a corresponding movement to the member 46 and upon movement of the member 46 to the left, as viewed in Figure 2, im-
parts a corresponding movement to the member 45. The outer end of the member 45 extendsinto the notch 42 and has an inclined surface 48 which cooperates with the inclined upperside 49 of the notch 42. The lower side 50 of the jaw opening and locking member 45 is adapted for cooperation with a locking abutment 51 on the arm 23, and the under side 52 of the head 53 at the outer end of the jaw opening and locking member 46 is adapted for cooperation with a locking abutment 54 on the arm 24. The head 53 of the member 46 has an inclined surface 55 for cooperation with the correspondingly inclined upper surface 56 of the notch 43.
From Figure 2 it will be observed that when the. jaw opening and locking member 45 is shift-- ed to the right as viewed in that figure, the inclined surfaces 48 and 55 will coac't with the inclined surfaces 49 and 56 to impart an upward movement to separate the upper mold part or cap member 7 of the mold from the mold body 6, thus moving the jaw 14, which is integrally formed or secured rigidly to the cap member '7, away from the body member 6 and the opposite jaw 15.
At the same time it is desirable that the movablelower jaw 15 be given a downward displacement to move that jaw also away from the casting cavity 20. Briefly, this is accomplished by motion reversing mechanism interposed between the guide arms 23 and 24 on the outer jaw or cap part 7 and the ends of the lower jaw 15, so that when the outer jaw member is movedupwardly the lower jaw is moved downwardly at the same time. the adjacent arm 104 shifts the jaw opening and locking member positively to the right as viewed in Figure 2. This movement is transmitted through the rod 4'7 to the member 46 to produce corresponding movement in that member. With the jaw means of the mold closed and locked in closed position as shown in Figure 2, this righthand movement of the members 45, 47 and 46 along the bottom of the mold and lengthwise of the casting cavity causes the inclined surfaces 48 and 55, by their cooperation with the inclined surfaces 49 and 56, to move the outer'mold part with its upper jaw 14 positively to open position as shown in Figures 5 and 6. The initial righthand movement of the jaw opening and locking members (Figure 2) releases the locking shoulders 50 and 52 from the locking abutments 51 and 54. The opening movement of the upper mold part with its casting jaw 14 operates through the reversing levers 60to move the lower jaw 15 positively to its lower open position.
For the purpose of locking the lower jaw 15 in its closed position the mold is provided Iwitha pair of pins 125 slidable in the mold body 6 beneath the offset surface of the recess 21. The lower ends of these pins cooperate with the members 45 and 46 and their upper ends cooperate with the bottom of the lower jaw member 15. With the members 45, 47 and 46 shifted to their righthand position to open the jaw members as shown in Figure 5, recesses 126 and 127 in the members 45 and 46 move into position beneath the lower ends of the pins 125 so that these pins may be displaced downwardly into these recesses by the downward opening movement of the jaw 15 into engagement with the bottom 128 of the recess 21. When the members 45 and 46 are shifted in the opposite direction to lock the jaw members closed, the inclined ends 128 and 129 of the re cesses 126 and 127 force the pins 125 upwardly until the lower ends of these pins ride upon the upper surfaces of the members 45 and 46, as shown in Figure 2. In this position these pins 125, by their engagement with the bottom of the jaw member 15, lock this jaw member positively in closed position. 1
From the foregoing it will now be apparent that the locking members 45 and 46 are operable to open positively the jaw members of the mold, and in their locking action operate to take up any play in the jaw members and to assure complete closed position of said members. The parts are operable lengthwise of the casting cavity and the members at both sides are actuated by engagement of one member with a singleabutment at one side, in the casting and ejecting positions of the mold wheel. The locking means is carried by and forms a part of the mold and the disposition of the arms 104 in the downward extensions 101 and 102 enables disposiiton of the operating abutments 116 and 117 outside the normal confines of a standard mold 16 in all positions thereof.
I propose to close the jaws of the mold 5 after the cast slugs have been ejected there-v from, and while the mold wheel 1 is being ro-,
tated with the driving gearsin full driving eragagem'ent to bring the mold from its ejecting position, the'position the mold occupies at the right-hand side of Figure 1 as shownat B, to its castingposition, that shown at the top of Figure 1 at A. Thus the mold jaws are moved to their closed position when the gears are all in full driving engaement and the teeth thereof held tightly against one another, at an appreciable length of time before the mold wheel'comes forward to lock the matrices preceding the casting operation, all as more fully explained in my copending application, Serial No. 529,362, filed -April 11, 1931.
The specific means provided for the purpose of closing the jaws of the molds includes a collar 130 positioned on-one of the vise locking studs 131 on the casting machine itself. The collar 130 maybe held on the stud 131 by'a set screw 132.- Inmachines with which I am familiar this'vise locking stud 131 is, in its upper position'when equipped with a collar 130, which may or may not be rotatable thereon, effective to close the jaws of the mold after the mold leaves its ejecting position and as it is or other mold closing means equivalent thereto should be positioned to operate the mold to close the jaws as the mold is moved from its ejecting position to its casting position. In the particular mold illustrated, the collar 130 on the stud 131 contacts with a suitable cap piece 134 fixedly secured to the movable outer jaw section 7.
Remembering that as the mold reaches the ejecting position the abutment 117 operates, upon the forward movement of the mold wheel in that position, to shift the outer mold part positively upwardly to open position and, through the levers 60, the inner mold jaw downwardly to open position, it will now be noted that as the mold wheel 1 is retracted from the vise frame and turned to move the particular mold from ejecting position, the mold will approach the moldclosing collar 130 which will contact With the rounded outer surface of the cap piece 134 to move the outer movable jaw section inwardly to closed position. This inward movement of the outer jaw will swing the levers 60 and move the "inner jaw 15 upwardly to closed position. And this is accomplished with the mold turning pinion in gear as set, out in my copending application Serial No. 529,362, filed April 11, 1931.
When the mold reaches its casting position the abutment 116 operates in the forward movement of the mold wheel in that position to operate the locking means which takes up any play in the jaw 1n ember and locks these members positively in full closed position. This prevents separation of these members under the force of the injected molten type metal. ' In'the embodiment of Figures 12 and 13, the cap member or outer mold part 7a is similar to the cap member or outer mold part '7 of the preceding embodiment except that the upper casting jaw 200, the lower surface of which forms the top of the casting cavity, instead of being formed as an integral part of the cap member or outer moldpart 7a is formed separately and removably attached to the mold part 711. It has in its lower surface the ribs and grooves 200 and 201 for forming the desired ribs and grooves in the upper surface of the cast slugs, and the upper surface of the jaw member 200 preferably has a dovetail key or tongue 202 extending longiqtudinally of the casting cavity.
This key or tongue 202 is adapted to slide into a corresponding beveled groove 203 formed in the adjacent bottom portion of the mold part 7a, and the casting jaw 200 is securely held against endwise movement with respect to the mold part 7a by screws or dowel members 204, the heads of which are countersunk in the top of the mold part 7a,
-whereas the shanks extend down through the key 202 and have engagement therein. While dowel pins may be used, these maybe eliminated if a press'fit is provided between the grooved tongue and the mold part 711. The tongue 202 and side walls of groove 203 take allthe stresses upon the casting jaw 200 and support this part rigidly with respect to the mold part 7a, the
screws 204 merely holding the jaw part up tightly in place against the mold part 7a if a press fit is not'provided. It is to be understood that a a square tongue andgroove engagement} maybe provided, if desired, between the jaw 200 and moldpart 7a, with the screws 204 then serving to ,means in closed posit on, and means operable lock the parts together. This removable casting jaw for the upper mold t, part simplifies manufacture and reduces the cost thereof by eliminating thev necessity for milling the desired formation out of a piece of stock'the depth of which is sufficient to provide a casting faceof the desired width. Furthermore, in the 7 event of a mistake or inaccuracy, it is unnecessary to remake the entire cap member and the removable character of the casting jaw efiects a saving in the matter of repairs. Heretofore in case of warping, it has been necessary tomake' an entire new'cap member'or to grind the entire mold with the possibility of making some or all replacement of the entirecap membe'n and the matter of grinding the entiremold is avoided.

In combination, a vise frame, a mold having jaw means forming a casting cavity, a downward extension at the bottom of the mold, said extension having a recess and a jaw opening and locking member slidable in the mold and having a depending arm operable in said recess, said arm being adapted to be actuated by an abutment on the vise frame for operating said jaw open ing and locking member.
29. In combination, a mold body, an outer mold part movable to open and closed positions and having a pair of arms slidable on said body, shoulders on said arms, and stop pins secured to the mold body within the confines thereof and engageable with said shoulders for limiting the closing movement of said outer mold part.
30. In combination, a mold wheel adapted-for turning movement, a mold attached to said mold wheel and having jaw means forming a type bar casting cavity, said jaw means being movable to open and closed positions, a vise frame, means at one side of the mold and cooperable with an abutment on the vise frame for opening said jaw means, means at the other side of the mold and cooperable with an abutment on the vise frame for locking said jaw means closed, and means renderedoperative by turning movement of the mold wheel for closing said jaw means.

In a mold for type line casting machines, the combination of jaw means forming the sides of a casting cavity and adapted to be opened and closed, and a linerforming the end of thecasting cavity, said liner being split adjacent the end of the casting cavity and having means thereon for supporting the end of a type bar cast in said cavity and guiding the bar from the cavity when said jaw means is opened.
32. In a mold for type line casting machines, the combination of a jaw member forming one side of the casting cavity, a liner cooperating with the end of said jaw member and closing the end of said cavity, saidliner being split adjacent its cavity closing end and along the adjacent end of the jaw member, and means rigidly securing said liner to the mold.
33. In a mold for type line casting machines,
the combination of a pair of liners forming the ends of a casting cavity, a pair of jaw members movable between said liners and forming the sides of said cavity, one of said liners being split adjacent said cavity closing end and along the adjacent end of one of said jaw members, the other liner being split adjacent its cavity closing end and along the adjacent end of the other jaw member, and means rigidly securing said liners to the mold.
34. A liner comprising a block havinga side adapted for closing the end of a casting cavity, said block being split adjacent said side to free the same.
35. A liner comprising a block split adjacent its inner vertical side by a cut extending from one of the horizontal sides of the block and into proximity to but short of the other horizontal side of the block.
36. A liner comprising a block split adjacent its inner vertical side by a cut extending from one of the horizontal sides of the block and into proximity to but short of the other horizontal side of the block, the inner end of said out .terminating in an enlarged opening and said block having openings for rigidly attaching the block to a mold.

In combination, a mold part, a jaw member removably carried by said mold part and having a casting surface forming one side of a casting cavity,said mold part having a dove-tail groove formed therein and extending lengthwise of the mold, and a dove-tail tongue on said removable jaw member fitting in said groove and HARLEY J.
